Real-money gaming ban may hit payment, regtech businesses hard

The second-order effects of a ban on real-money gaming (RMG) are set to be felt across the fintech sector, with digital payment companies and regulatory technology startups bracing for a large chunk of their business Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill , 2025, which seeks to impose a countrywide ban on online games where real money is wagered , has received Parliament approval with the Rajya Sabha passing it on Thursday , a day after the Lok Sabha cleared it . This is set to impact gaming platforms like Dream11 , Pokerbaazi and to multiple industry insiders, the payments industry could potentially lose Rs 20,000-30,000 crore in monthly transaction volumes once movement of money for real-money gaming stops.'You will see some impact playing out on UPI payments as well since that was the most popular payment mode used by gamers,' the founder of a payment firm said on the condition of transactions on RMG platforms skyrocket during popular cricket tournaments like the Indian Premier League and ICC World founder said those bumps would disappear and it would be a huge loss to the payments industry, which chases payment volumes as a major growth firms used to chase gaming platforms given they offered better margins and volumes tend to be very high, another senior industry insider told ET. There would be a dent in terms of revenue as well, he Razorpay, PayU and Easebuzz are some of the payment firms that powered gaming to ET's queries, a Razorpay spokesperson said the firm's exposure to the sector was less than Rs 1,000 crore in transactions company did not comment on the revenue impact.A PayU spokesperson said the company's engagement with gaming merchants had been limited. 'We partner only with a very small number of skill-based gaming players. Gaming represents only a minor portion of our overall portfolio. Given this measured and controlled exposure, the impact on our overall business is non-existent,' the spokesperson emailed to Cashfree and Easebuzz remained unanswered at press time payment firms, regulatory tech startups, those who offer customer-verification services to gaming platforms, are set to see an impact. Gaming companies take their service to undertake a video KYC, which most of the large platforms had made mandatory before a user could withdraw the funds won in the games. In fact, Tamil Nadu had mandated KYC of users even before they could wager any money for a game.'The regulatory technology platforms that were earlier instrumental in supporting RMG platforms with compliance solutions will now have to look for other avenues to assist emerging forms of sports platforms in staying on the right side of the law,' said Rishi Agrawal, chief executive officer at Teamlease real money being involved, these platforms will no longer go for large customer-verification processes, instead focusing on simple customer onboarding.'Many of the ID verification firms are dependent on RMG players for revenue generation, now that will completely disappear from the top line,' said the founder of an identity verification the legislation has been designed to protect Indians and especially the youth from addiction, financial ruin and mental health issues, the blanket ban would disrupt a large industry that employs around 200,000 people and received Rs 25,000 crore in foreign direct investments in more than 450 startups, according to industry executives.

LEAP to be a blockbuster initiative to boost AI talent pool: Sankanur

Dharwad: Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society (KITS) managing director Rahul Sankanur said the LEAP (Local Economy Accelerator Programme) launched by the department of IT and BT will be a blockbuster initiative to strengthen India's artificial intelligence (AI) talent pool. The IAS officer was speaking to the media after taking part in the Jan AI Conclave organised by IIIT-Dharwad on Thursday. Sankanur noted that the state govt has earmarked Rs 1,000 crore for the programme and plans are under way to bring as many as 17 AI-focused initiatives under its ambit. "Bengaluru, with over 7,000 startups, accounting for 20% of India's total, has firmly established itself as the country's startup hub. It is ranked among the world's top 10 startup destinations and is already among the top five AI talent hubs globally. This momentum provides abundant opportunities for young engineers to build AI-driven startups," he said. Meanwhile, Prof Santanu Bhattacharya of MIT Media Labs observed that AI is poised to revolutionise the world, and India must develop region-specific micro templates to effectively address local problems. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Australian Startup Develops Innovative Help for Neuropathy healthreliefstore Click Here Undo "For India to grow exponentially, rural incomes must rise significantly. AI can play a transformative role in strengthening agriculture, healthcare, and language technologies. Voice-based modules, for instance, could go a long way in easing rural challenges. Young technocrats should focus on developing apps that enable small vendors to market their produce, thereby boosting the rural economy," he suggested. Head Held High Foundation managing trustee Madan Padaki said, "So far, 3,500 people have registered for Jan AI, and 1,500 have been certified upon course completion. With the establishment of Jan AI Kendras, villagers will have access to a wealth of sectoral information, eventually creating an 'AI Village' ecosystem." IIIT-Dharwad director Mahadev Prasanna highlighted that the institute is playing a vital role in making AI accessible to the common man. He revealed that students at IIIT-Dharwad are currently developing two AI-powered apps, one for agriculture and another for healthcare. "The agri app allows farmers to photograph diseased crops, after which AI instantly diagnoses the issue and suggests remedies. Similarly, a mental health app is being designed to provide psychiatric support," he added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Gujarat's semi-conductor push gains pace as CG Semi prepares to start production next week

Ahmedabad: Gujarat's semiconductor ambitions are moving from plans to production, with multiple projects hitting key milestones. CG Semi Pvt Ltd is set to begin pilot operations at its outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing (OSAT) facility in Sanand GIDC next week, said sources. The company has invested about Rs 7,600 crore in the project and will reportedly launch its qualification line next week, ahead of full-scale production targeted for 2026. Spread over 32 acres, the Sanand facility marks a major step in Gujarat's fast-expanding semiconductor ecosystem. Industry experts say Gujarat is seeing unprecedented momentum in chip-making. "The state, with its clear vision of becoming a semiconductor hub, has been successful in attracting the Tata Group's $10 billion semiconductor fabrication facility (FAB) in Dholera, which is already under construction and expected to begin production by the end of 2026," said Sudhir Naik, head (mid-west region) of India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA). According to Naik, Gujarat is the only state in India to have four OSAT/ATMP/chip packaging plants: three in Sanand and one in Surat. "Surat-based Suchi Semicon has already begun production at its packaging plant. Within the next two years, all of these facilities are expected to commence large-scale operations, firmly positioning Gujarat on the global semiconductor map," he said. Kaynes Semicon is also gearing up to launch production soon. Together, these investments represent a major leap in India's bid to build a robust semiconductor supply chain, with Gujarat emerging as its nucleus.
