Sir Salman Rushdie ‘pleased' by maximum sentence for attacker
US citizen Hadi Matar was found guilty of attempted murder and assault in February and sentenced this month.
He was also sentenced to seven years for wounding another man who was on stage with the writer at the time of the attack.
On Monday, Indian-born British author Sir Salman told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: 'I was pleased that he got the maximum available, and I hope he uses it to reflect upon his deeds.'
He also spoke about working with BBC producer Alan Yentob, who died on Saturday, on a 2024 BBC Two programme that featured an artificial intelligence (AI) creation, based on his fictional conversation with Matar that he recalled in his autobiography Knife: Meditations After An Attempted Murder.
Sir Salman said: 'I thought if I was to really meet him, to ask him questions, I wouldn't get very much out of him. I doubt that he would open his heart to me.
'And so I thought, 'well, I could open it by myself. I'd probably do it better than a real conversation would'.'
He added: '(The AI animation) was very startling. I have to say it really certainly made a point.'
Sir Salman called former BBC executive and TV presenter Yentob not just an 'unbelievable champion of the arts', but someone who has a 'real gift for friendship'.
'He's one of the giants of British media in the last generation,' he also said.
'I think he will be remembered as a maker of great programmes and as an enabler of great programmes as well.'
Sir Salman recalled Yentob gave him his first break with a programme that saw Sir Ben Kingsley read his book Midnight's Children before he won the Booker Prize, and the publication of his 1988 book The Satanic Verses.
It was The Satanic Verses that saw Sir Salman accused of being blasphemous by hardline Muslims and prompted then Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to issue a fatwa calling for his death in 1989.
He later spoofed himself and Yentob, when they appeared to arm wrestle on the BBC satirical programme W1A.
Sir Salman also said that it was 'horrendous' that the Kids Company controversy made him resign as the author added: 'I think it needs to be said, repeatedly, (he was) completely exonerated, and so were all the other directors.'
Yentob served as chairman of the board of trustees for Kids Company, founded by Camila Batmanghelidjh, from 2003 until the collapse of the charity in 2015.
He always insisted there was no conflict of interest in his decision to call Newsnight about its investigation into Kids Company and had not 'abused my position at the BBC'.
During Yentob's tenure at BBC2, Absolutely Fabulous, starring Jennifer Saunders and Dame Joanna Lumley, arts series The Late Show and Have I Got News For You, were commissioned.
He also launched CBBC and CBeebies, commissioned Colin Firth-starring Pride And Prejudice, and in 2024 was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by the King for services to the arts and media.

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: End of an era as sonless Sir Benjamin Slade turns his mansion over to hotel group
His quest for a wife secured him national attention when he emphasised that he was looking for a 'good breeder' decades younger than him, having explained that when 'you want a new car, you get a new car, not some old banger'. But I can disclose that, aged 79, Sir Benjamin Slade has accepted that he will never sire a lad to inherit his baronetcy, created for his great-great-great grandfather in 1831, and Maunsel House, the family seat in Somerset, and its 1,300-acre estate. Accordingly, he's now thrashing out a deal which will see Maunsel leased for the next 40 years. The incomer won't be a private individual but a corporate entity. 'I've got a deal with a hotel group. They're very upmarket,' Sir Benjy assures me, adding that he's intent on securing a final agreement which allows him to use Maunsel 'three or four times a year', even though he'll be paying for the privilege whenever he does so. He refrains from naming the hotel group, though it's probably a British one, given that he's previously summarised Russians as 'dishonest', Chinese as 'impossible' and Arabs 'a bloody nightmare', as well as making it clear that he won't do business 'with any country which has green in [its] flag'. That does, of course, leave open the possibility of a newcomer from the USA, a country with which Sir Benjy, who lives in a farmhouse on the estate, has numerous connections. These emerged in 2005 when he embarked on a proposed reality TV show which would have seen the remains of his 12th century ancestor William Atte Slade exhumed and compared with DNA from thousands of would-be Slade heirs from around the world. By then, Sir Benjy's 14-year childless marriage to Pauline Myburgh was long over. So, too, was a six-year romance with Fiona Aitken – now Countess of Carnarvon. Sir Ben's most recent love affair was with an American, Sahara Sunday Spain. In 2020, she bore him a child – who, alas for her prospects as Sir Benjamin's heir, was a girl, Violet. Perhaps one day she'll check into the hotel alongside him? Soprano's secret romance Danielle De Niese's life has been almost as dramatic as some of the operas she stars in, ever since she won a talent contest aged nine in Melbourne, Australia, before moving to Los Angeles, where she won an Emmy award while still only 19. The soprano, 46, has, though, revealed that she didn't want to tempt fate after falling in love with Gus Christie, 61, executive chairman of Glyndebourne opera house in East Sussex. They followed in the footsteps of Gus's grandfather John Christie, the founder of Glyndebourne, who had married the soprano Audrey Mildmay 70 years earlier. 'We became a couple, and we were very quiet about it because there's a very storied, fabled origin story about Glyndebourne about John marrying this soprano,' the singer says. 'So when Gus and I were in our early courtship days, we didn't tell anybody because I didn't want to get over-excited.' Cinderella star's slippery moment A glass slipper is pivotal to the fairy tale Cinderella, yet it proved more of a sore point for Lily James, who played the leading role in Disney's 2015 film version. The Downton Abbey and Mamma Mia 2 star, 36, reveals that she tried to make the wishes of a friend's niece come true by video-calling her while wearing a Cinderella costume and the Jimmy Choo diamond-encrusted stilettos made specifically for the film. 'This little girl lit up,' Lily recalls. 'Then I said, 'Look, I'm going to put it on'.' To her horror, the Surrey-born star found it a tight squeeze. She reveals: 'I'd been dancing all night at [London club] Koko, and my feet were swollen. I couldn't get the shoe on...' Forget sun tans - Lila chills in an electric face mask Spare a thought for the model Lila Moss, who feels the need to use cumbersome beauty treatments even while on holiday. The 22-year-old daughter of Kate Moss and magazine editor Jefferson Hack used a black LED face mask while reading on Formentera, the Spanish island. The anti-ageing light therapy device is said to help improve skin tone. Lila is on a break with her friend Lady Lola Bute, 26, daughter of the late 7th Marquess of Bute, aka racing driver Johnny Dumfries. Lila, who is a type 1 diabetic, could also be seen wearing a glucose monitor in the snap. Earlier this year, she fronted the campaign for Mattel's first diabetic Barbie. Things are looking up for Victoria Cipriani. Amid her acrimonious divorce from former England rugby star Danny Cipriani, she has announced she's now a certified neuroscience practitioner. 'I didn't get here through manifesting,' declares Victoria, 43. 'I got here through pain, practice, and a relentless need to understand myself.' Veteran actress Anne Reid, who recently played Queen Elizabeth in the play By Royal Appointment, recalls the disastrous time she performed in front of the late monarch and forgot her lines. The 90-year-old says: 'On one occasion at Buckingham Palace, I was performing a scene from Romeo and Juliet. I was playing the nurse and was terrified and 'dried' in the middle of my speech, so I ended up waffling and making rather a lot up. 'Afterwards, the Queen said to me, 'You had a lot to say, didn't you?' I replied, 'Yes, too much'.

Strictly Come Dancing's Nadiya Bychkova shares health update after hospitalisation
Strictly pro Nadiya Bychkova shared earlier this week that she had ended up in hospital amid rehearsals for the BBC show's return and she's since issued an update to fans Professional dancer Nadiya Bychkova has shared an update after ending up in hospital amid Strictly Come Dancing rehearsals. She previously revealed that she had landed on her back in a fall during a training session this week. It was announced on Tuesday that Nadiya, 35, had been in rehearsals in London for the new series of the BBC show that afternoon when she injured herself. Then, yesterday, she told fans that she'd got "the all-clear" at hospital and assured that she will be back on the dancefloor "soon". The pro has now issued another update ahead of returning to rehearsals for the show, which is expected to launch next month. It comes after a Strictly Come Dancing star pulls out of show as he makes career announcement. Nadiya took to Instagram this evening with a message for her followers on the platform. She expressed gratitude for the support she's received this week and revealed in the post that she will be back on the dancefloor tomorrow. She wrote: "Hi everyone! I've had so many kind messages over the past 48 hours - thank you for your love and support. So many questions too so I just wanted to let you know that I had another scan today - just to check things over - and some more physio from the Strictly team and I'll be back on that dancefloor tomorrow." Nadiya concluded by saying that she's looking forward to the new series. She wrote in her statement earlier: "I feel a lot more like myself today, can't wait to be back with my [Strictly] family and looking forward for the new series." Earlier this week, a source revealed to the Mirror that Nadiya had injured herself during rehearsals. They said: "It looked pretty nasty and no-one was taking any chances. The Strictly crew rushed into action and she was stretchered out." A source close to Strictly said: "As a precaution, following a fall during rehearsals, Nadiya was taken to hospital for checks and is receiving full support from medical and welfare teams. Rehearsals continue and the Strictly team are in close contact with Nadiya." The following day, Nadiya shared details about the incident. Alongside a photo of herself lying in a hospital bed, she wrote yesterday: "Well… where do I start? What a 24 hours! Thank you so much for all the messages, love and support. "I just wanted you to know that I am ok. I had a fall in training yesterday and landed on my back. I was really worried for a while and I was so thankful to the Strictly family and medical team who really looked after me. The staff at the hospital were so kind and caring." She added: "I'm smiling in the picture but it was really scary and there were a few tears as I had to lie still for hours but I was given the all-clear after an x-ray and allowed to go home." Nadiya then told her followers: "I've got some physio today but I will be back on that dance floor soon and I'll be ready to shine and sparkle in the new series of the biggest show on TV. I can't wait for you to see it. Keep dancing!"

Destination X thrown into chaos as police interrupts next episode of BBC show
Destination X fans were left in stitches as the BBC reality competition is thrown into chaos BBC's fresh globetrotting reality series Destination X descended into mayhem after Italian authorities disrupted production. Fronted by Welsh comedian Rob Brydon, the programme follows 10 contestants on an epic European journey aboard a coach with tinted windows, visiting stunning but enigmatic destinations. During each episode, participants face trials to secure hints that might assist them in solving one crucial puzzle: precisely where on Earth have they landed? Competitors build partnerships and feuds throughout their quest, all vying for a substantial monetary reward. At the conclusion of Thursday's episode (August 14) of the programme, audiences received a preview of the forthcoming instalment which spiralled into disorder when local authorities disrupted shooting, reports the Express. As the group neared a border checkpoint, Italian officers seemed to stop the coach, declaring "you have no permit". It was then that BBC production staff informed the team: "Just bear with us please, we're having some issues with local authorities". Police subsequently enquired: "How many people on the bus?" before a crew member was spotted conversing with them prior to yelling: "We need to find the paperwork now". It wasn't long before supporters flocked to X - previously Twitter - to voice their theories online. One viewer wrote: "Not the police getting involved, my word" whilst another quipped: "The next location is Venice jail [laughing emoji]" as a third added: "Messy TV at its finest [cry-laughing emoji]." However, some viewers were sceptical about the police intervention. One viewer scoffed: "Not falling for that! [cry-laughing emoji]" while another chimed in with: "Not real police I reckon." A third viewer noted: "That police happened on the US version too" and a fourth quipped: "Yeah sure there are cameras everywhere and the Italian police would definitely allow it to be filmed as they raid the bus." Executive producer Dan Adamson previously told the Mirror: "We crossed a lot of borders and there was always a chance that we were going to have officials trying to board the bus, and so we had to have plan Bs, which we had fake uniforms that we would then do a second boarding of the bus to try and pretend it was just part of the room.' The dramatic twist followed an episode that left fans feeling short-changed when Rob announced that no contestants would be leaving the reality show that night. Viewers quickly took to social media to vent their frustration. One disgruntled fan blasted: "What an absolute waste of an episode" and another concurred: "What an absolutely, pointless, waste of time this part of the show has been. Honestly don't see any point to it other than filler." Another viewer agreed, stating: "So if you skip this episode apart from the first five minutes you wouldn't miss any of the game process" while a third lamented: "This format is nonsense? Poor man's Traitors." Destination X is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
