Reports have it that the Indian Navy, in collaboration with DRDO's Pune-based Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) lab, tested 17 rockets at different ranges from the INS Kavaratti warship.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Navy, and the associated industry partners for the successful development and testing of the indigenous system. What has Union Defence Minister said?
In a post on social media platform X , the Defence Ministery stated, 'The User trials of Extended Range Anti-Submarine Rocket (ERASR) have been successfully carried out from INS Kavaratti. Raksha Mantri Shri @rajnathsingh congratulates DRDO, Indian Navy and the Industry involved in development and trials of the System. He has added that the successfully induction of this system will boost the striking power of the Indian Navy.'
Earlier on Monday, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the demands for Indian defence equipment have increased following Operation Sindoor, and a big market is awaiting India.
Speaking at the Controllers Conference organised by DRDO, the Union Defence Minister said, 'The world is looking towards our Defence sector. The valour that our soldiers have shown during Operation Sindoor, as well as the way we showcased the capabilities of our domestic equipment, has led to an increase in demand for our indigenous defence products. World military expenditure has increased to over USD 2.7 trillion in 2024 – such a big market is awaiting us.'

The Extended Trajectory Long Duration Hypersonic Cruise Missile (ET-LDHCM) significantly outperforms and beats the BrahMos cruise missile. India has tested this missile as major conflicts are going on in the world including Russia-Ukraine war and Israel-Iran conflict. Also, India and Pakistan were engaged in fierce military conflict during Operation Sindoor in which Turkey and China were on the enemy's side. Apart from this defence modernisation, India is enhancing the missile systems such as BrahMos, Agni-5, and Akash. India's hypersonic capabilities take huge stride The ET-LDHCM is powered by a scramjet engine that uses air-breathing propulsion, relying on atmospheric oxygen rather than a traditional rotating compressor. This allows the missile to reach Mach 8 (9878 km/h) compared to BrahMos' Mach 3 speed (3705 km/h). This system has a much longer range than BrahMos' 450 km. it can strike as far as 1,500 km. This combination of speed and extended reach enhances India's strategic strike range. Designed for stealth, precision, and flexibility The ET-LDHCM hypersonic missile can be launched from land, sea, and air and its ability to alter its path mid-flight gives it adaptability in dynamic battlefield conditions. It can carry a payload of 1,000 to 2,000 kilograms and is designed to deliver both conventional and nuclear warheads. Its low-altitude flight capability helps it avoid radar detection, while its high targeting precision allows it to strike critical infrastructure in difficult terrains. Designed to work in extreme conditions The missile is designed to endure extreme thermal stress, with performance stability maintained at temperatures up to 2,000°C during hypersonic travel. This capability provides sustained speed and accuracy. Currently, only Russia, the United States, and China have operational hypersonic cruise missile technology. If India's ET-LDHCM test proves successful, it would join this small and elite group of nations with indigenous hypersonic weapon systems.

Unlike the author's fictional robot Speedy, these systems will not hesitate when ethical ambiguities arise. They will not wait for human correction. They will act without the possibility of a moral pause. LAWS are weapons that can select, track, and engage targets without real-time human control. LAWS rely on AI, sensor fusion, and machine learning algorithms to make independent targeting decisions. This autonomy dramatically accelerates response time and expands operational reach, but at significant ethical and legal cost. The development of LAWS is already underway in multiple countries. The US, China, Russia, Israel and South Korea have invested heavily in autonomous platforms ranging from loitering munitions to swarming drones and autonomous ground systems. The US military has demonstrated autonomous swarms in exercises like Project Convergence; China is integrating AI into hypersonic systems and naval platforms; and Russia has tested autonomous tanks like Uran-9. Although fully autonomous systems capable of making unsupervised kill decisions are not yet officially deployed, the technological threshold is narrowing.
