Ash emission event on Mount Kanlaon recorded anew
An ash emission event was recorded anew on Mount Kanlaon.
Based on a footage of an Internet Protocol (IP) camera of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the ash emission event lasted for about 30 minutes on June 2, 2025.
The ash emission event generated a grayish plume that reached a height of 1,200 meters.
The emission was described by PHIVOLCS to be thin this time, and reached a few barangays in Bago City.
'Sa upper portion ng ating bulkan, meron na namang pag-clog ang ating volcano kung saan dumadaan ang gas na ini-emit ng magma,' said Engr. Mari Andylene Quintia, resident volcanologist at Kanlaon Volcano Observatory.
At least 38 volcanic earthquakes were recorded, which makes the possibility of another eruption likely, according to PHIVOLCS.
The latest ash emission event happened almost a year after a phreatic eruption on Mount Kanlaon occurred on June 3, 2024 at past 6 p.m.
The Office of Civil Defense - Negros Island Region (OCD-NIR) has sent an Incident Management Team to inspect persons getting in and out of the six-kilometer expanded danger zone on Mount Kanlaon.
Another situation that the team will look into is the preparation at the evacuation centers for the resumption of classes by June 16, 2025.
Based on OCD-NIR data, close to 2,000 students are affected by the volcanic unrest and have continued to stay at evacuation centers in the Province of Negros Occidental.
Most of these students are in the Municipality of La Castellana.
To pad disruption of classes, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of La Castellana has requested for additional family tents that will serve as temporary classrooms.
'Nagwo-worry na naman sila kung papano ang enrollment ng mga bata. Ang mga LGUs natin naghahanap rin ng pamamaraan upang ma-address ito,' Donato Sermeno III, regional director of OCD-NIR, said.
DepEd Negros Occidental has considered alternative learning mode for students and a once-a-week face-to-face classes for students dwelling in evacuation centers. — GMA Regional TV News
