'1944' Cast: Unraveling the Mystery of the Dutton Family Tree
Now that the Yellowstone prequel 1923 has finished with a heartbreaking finale, all eyes are on the next prequel in the franchise, 1944.
Be forewarned that there will be some spoilers for 1923's final episode in this article. Variety has confirmed that 1923 ended with two seasons, and the franchise will now skip ahead 21 years. But who will be in the cast?
As fans know, Spencer Dutton survived the showdown between the Dutton family and its rich developer enemy, played by Timothy Dalton. However, his wife, Alex, died from the results of hypothermia after giving birth to their son, John Dutton, so she won't be in 1944, which will be set in the height of World War II.
That has people trying to unravel the lingering mysteries in the Dutton family tree. It's likely, due to the voiceover at the end of 1923, that the baby John Dutton will be featured as a young adult in 1944, although the official cast list and release date have not yet been announced.
But how does this all tie into Kevin Costner's character?
Costner's character's name was John Dutton III, and he was born in April 1959, so he obviously won't feature in 1944, even as a baby. Costner's dad in the show is named John Dutton Jr., and the family name provides a clue. He was played in Yellowstone by Dabney Coleman, who died in 2024, according to People.
But is John Dutton Jr. the son of Spencer and Alex or Jack and Elizabeth?
It's not clear yet whether John Dutton, the baby in 1923, is the direct ancestor of Kevin Costner's John Dutton, despite the coincidence of the name. Remember that Elizabeth, the wife of the deceased Jack, is also pregnant at the end of 1923. So which baby ends up being the father of Costner's character? Could Elizabeth also name her son John, after her husband Jack and his father John Dutton 1? That's' unclear, according to the actress who plays Elizabeth, Michelle Randolph. But it's possible. And there are some major clues.
It's almost certain fans will see Spencer again in 1944, though, because he would be young enough, and he survived the 1923 finale.
"Is the door is still open? I don't know. And so, like, you can't confirm then, like, it could go either way. I feel like everyone has their own theory, but I can confidently say that it's not confirmed," Randolph told CinemaBlend.
Randolph also told People that Elizabeth is definitely still pregnant at the end of 1923. That got confusing because she was pregnant, suffered a miscarriage, and then became pregnant again before her husband died.
"Where that baby goes, I do not know," Randolph told People.
"Elizabeth walks away pregnant. We assume she's going back to Boston. We don't know where she's going," Randolph added to People. "I really had to kind of create my own storyline, and not get attached to it, at the same time." Will Elizabeth return to the Dutton family ranch and make an appearance in 1944? That's unclear.
We do know that Sklenar's character Spencer ends up in a relationship with an unnamed widow and has another child, although he never remarries. That's revealed in the narration in 1923. Could this widow be Elizabeth? Also unclear.
Tim McGraw's character in 1883 was the ancestor of Costner's John Dutton. According to CinemaBlend, he was the great-great grandfather of Costner's character.
That would mean he's more likely the direct descendant of Elizabeth and Jack's baby, as James would be the great-great grandfather of Costner's John, John 1 would be his great-grandfather, Jack would be his grandfather and the unnamed baby (possibly) would be his dad.
However, some sites say instead that James Dutton was the great-grandfather of Costner's character, and that, of course, is key, as that would open up the possibility that Spencer was his grandfather, not Jack.
Remember that Spencer Dutton was the uncle of Jack, so he's one generation older.
The release date for
1944

Billy Joel's first wife walked out on him in hospital bed after motorcycle crash that nearly killed him
Billy Joel is reliving some of the most painful moments in his life. In the upcoming documentary, "Billy Joel: And So It Goes," the "Piano Man" crooner, 76, recalled the moment his first wife, Elizabeth Weber, walked away from their marriage shortly after his near-fatal motorcycle crash. "I always romanticized motorcycles. There's something about it. I feel like I can be completely disconnected from the world. There's a sense of freedom about that," Joel said in the doc, per People. Billy Joel Cancels All Concerts Due To Brain Disorder Diagnosis Joel said his admiration for motorcycles left Weber "scared all the time." "I on many occasions said to him, you know, 'You can't do this, this is dangerous,'" she said. Read On The Fox News App "Elizabeth had warned me, she said, 'Be careful, be careful, 'cause you're going to have an accident,'" the musician recalled. In 1982, Joel suffered multiple injuries after his bike crashed into a vehicle mid-intersection. "I was amazed I was still alive. I should have died in that accident," he said. "And I laid there in shock for a couple of minutes and I went to the hospital." The accident left him with a broken arm, leg and wrist. While he recovered in the hospital, Weber opted out of the marriage. "I would've stayed, I would've been able — like so many women before me — to make that accommodation for someone you love ,but there was no way that I could stand by and watch him kill himself," said Weber, who recalled placing the house key onto a tray in his hospital room. "I just didn't have that in me. And I felt very strongly that that's what was going." When Weber left the hospital, she recalled telling Joel, "You know, someday they may write about us and I hope that they say that we really did something." According to her, Joel responded with, "I hope they could say we went all the way." She added, "And that was it. That really was the final. That was it." The couple were married from 1973 until 1982. "After 'Glass Houses' came out I was always on the road, working, working, I look back on that guy and I don't even know who he was, he had to be so ambitious to work that hard and work that much," Joel said in the documentary. "So, it must have not been easy to be married to me at the time." "I wasn't asking him to change, but I just did not want to live like that. My response to it was to get a place in New York City where you can enjoy anonymity — so it wasn't so much as we separated, but we started to get a little bit isolated from one another and I also knew that he wasn't in a good place. We were all under a lot of stress," Weber said. "All of us dealt with our stresses in different ways. And so there was a lot, a lot of alcohol use and eventually a lot of drug use." When the musician was in his early 20s, Joel was part of a band called Attila with his best friend, Jon Small, who was married to Weber at the time. He ended up moving in with Small, Weber, and their son, according to People. "Bill and I spent a lot of time together," Weber confessed in the documentary, per People. She added that their friendship was gradual and a "slow build." Joel eventually told his best friend, "I'm in love with your wife." "I felt very, very guilty about it. They had a child. I felt like a homewrecker," Joel admitted in the documentary, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday. "I was just in love with a woman, and I got punched in the nose, which I deserved. Jon was very upset. I was very upset." Billy Joel Opens Up About Affair That Led To Two Suicide Attempts The betrayal not only ended Joel and Small's friendship at the time but also dissolved their band, Attila. Consumed by guilt and depression, Joel's personal and professional life unraveled, as he began to spiral. Click Here To Sign Up For The Entertainment Newsletter "I had no place to live. I was sleeping in laundromats, and I was depressed, I think to the point of almost being psychotic," Joel said in the documentary. So, I figured, 'That's it. I don't want to live anymore.' I was just in a lot of pain and it was sort of like why hang out? Tomorrow is going to be just like today is, and today sucks. So, I just thought I'd end it all." Joel's sister shared in the film that she was working as a medical assistant and gave him sleeping pills to help with the restless nights. "I went to go see him in the hospital, and he was laying there white as a sheet. I thought that I'd killed him." While Joel acknowledged that he had been "very selfish" during the tumultuous time, he recalled his first thought when he woke up from his coma was that he wanted to attempt suicide again. During Joel's second attempt at suicide, he ingested "lemon Pledge," a furniture polish. Miraculously, he survived both attempts, after Small rushed him to the hospital. "Even though our friendship was blowing up, Jon saved my life," Joel explained in the documentary. Fox News Digital's Stephanie Giang-Paunon contributed to this post. 'Tension' Rises Between Katy Perry And Orlando Bloom Amid Latest Backlash
and are reportedly hitting a few sour notes in their relationship. A new source claims that Katy Perry has been feeling the pressure following the release of her latest album "143," which dropped in September, and it is causing some "tension" with Orlando Bloom. The insider spoke with PEOPLE Magazine, claiming, 'Katy was deeply frustrated following the reception of her new album,' they shared. 'It made her very stressed. Orlando was understanding, but it did cause some tension.' The album, a high-energy, love-fueled dance-pop collection, was designed to be a celebration. 'My vision was to create a bold, exuberant, celebratory dance-pop album with the symbolic 143 numerical expression of love as a throughline message,' Perry explained in a statement at the time, referring to the retro pager code meaning 'I love you.' But not everyone was feeling the love. A second source added, 'She was also disappointed in some of the tour reviews. It's put stress on their relationship.' Despite the criticism, Perry has powered through with a sold-out tour that's been met with enthusiastic fans overseas. After selling out three nights in Mexico, prompting the addition of an extra show, the singer is now performing to packed venues in Australia. The "Lifetimes" tour hits the U.S. beginning July 10 in Denver. As for the negative chatter? Perry isn't letting it define her. Back in February, she spoke candidly to PEOPLE about tuning out the noise. 'You shouldn't read it when it's good. You shouldn't read it when it's bad,' she said. 'My therapist said something that really changed my life. What anybody thinks about you is none of your business. It's what you think about yourself.' She also revealed that "143" was born out of 'a real shift' in her life after becoming a mom to daughter Daisy Dove, whom she welcomed with Bloom in August 2020. 'I really tapped into that feminine divine energy. The messages on it are celebratory. They're about love.' Perry and Bloom have been together for nearly a decade and got engaged on Valentine's Day in 2019. While the couple has weathered ups and downs over the years, Perry recently showed she's still fiercely protective of her man. During her May 17 show at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the 'Teenage Dream' singer jokingly called out a fan in the audience for sliding into Bloom's DMs. 'Cute grin. I know why you're here,' she teased from the stage before launching into her song 'I'm his, he's mine.' 'Listen, if you keep DM'ing my man... Oh, Kyle? I know, I know. You've been doing it for months, ever since the residency,' she continued. 'If you keep on DM'ing my man, I'm going to have you removed. Seriously, get your own life.' When the fan tried to hand her something, Perry wasn't having it. 'I don't want it. I'm his. I said I'm his. Stay the f-ck away.' Bloom got candid about his relationship with Perry during a 2019 appearance on the "Today" show, emphasizing the importance of being on the same page before walking down the aisle again. 'It's important to me that we are aligned. I've been married and divorced, and I don't want to do it again,' Bloom shared at the time. 'And we're both fully aware of that. She's remarkable and so I'm always so impressed with that and I'm encouraged.' Three years after Orlando Bloom popped the question, Katy Perry opened up about their postponed wedding during an appearance on "The Kyle and Jackie O Show," explaining that the COVID-19 pandemic had put their wedding plans on hold. 'It's a destination location that like, you know, we're still trying for it to work out, but every couple of months it's like, 'New variant! New variant! New variant!'' she said. Last year, Perry opened up about attending couples therapy with Bloom and how it's helped strengthen their bond. Speaking on Chelsea Handler's "Dear Chelsea" podcast, the singer explained that therapy has played a key role in keeping their relationship grounded. 'We love it because it keeps us in tune,' she said. 'The resentment can get really strong when you're both working hard, and so when you want to come back to being normal in a domesticated world where you have a child and stuff like that, you have to really learn how to be kind of different out there in the big and in the small.'

Why Mia Sara's 'Ferris Bueller' Role Had Her Kids Cringing
Why Mia Sara's 'Ferris Bueller' Role Had Her Kids Cringing originally appeared on Parade. Mia Sara might've been the '80s cool girl following her role as Sloane Peterson in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but to her kids, watching their mom in the film was "embarrassing." In a new interview with PEOPLE, Sara, 57, spoke about what it was like to film the 1986 flick, and why her two kids weren't the biggest fans of her role–at first. "My kids have absolutely seen it. I think when they were younger, it was just embarrassing," Sara told PEOPLE of her role as Sloane, the girlfriend of Matthew Broderick's Ferris, who skips school to go to Chicago for the day with Ferris and Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck). "My kids, because they grew up in Hollywood, they grew up in Los Angeles, they had a lot of friends whose parents were actors who were still really working all the time, and so they were kind of bummed that I stopped working," she said. While it's been quite some time since Sara has been on screen, she's making her highly-anticipated return in Mike Flanagan's new film, The Life of Chuck, and this time around, Sara said her kids couldn't be more excited to watch their mom do her thing. "They're really excited and they're really proud of me for working again, so that is nice," she gushed. Sara shares son Dashiell, 28, with ex Jason Connery and daughter Amelia, 20, with husband Brian Henson, son of Muppets creator Jim Henson. In The Life of Chuck–her first role in 10 years–Sara plays the part of Sarah Krantz, the grandmother of Tom Hiddleston's lead character Charles Krantz. The movie follows the events of Charles' life in reverse-chronological order. The star-studded project also features Benjamin Pajak, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Hamill,Kate Siegel, Karen Gillan, Carl Lumbly and Annalise Basso, among others "Honestly, it really was all about Mike," Sara said of working with Flanagan, 47. When asked if she envisions more acting roles for the future, she added: "If Mike needs me, I'll be there." The Life of Chuck is in select theaters now and will debut nationwide June 13.
