FPCCI extends tenure of officebearers by a year
FPCCI held its Executive Committee and Extra Ordinary General Body Meeting l simultaneously at Capital Office (Chair), Head Office Karachi and Regional Office Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta.
The meeting was chaired by Atif Ikram Sheikh, President FPCCI & ECO-CCI and Vice President CACCI and attended by Executive Committee and General Body Members of FPCCI and other leading businessmen and industrialist.

The house passed the audited accounts of FPCCI for the year 2024 and unanimously appreciated the performance President FPCCI and national and international level for facilitating the business community and resolving their issues.
During the recent past months, the FPCCI organized its delegation to UK, Bangladesh, Turkiye, Singapore, Belarus, Saudi Arabia etc and successfully held meetings at different multilateral forums like CACCI, Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development, D-8 Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit etc.
FPCCI first time in history organized Sustainable Tourism Forum with the collaboration of OIC for promoting tourism potentials and highlighting soft image of Pakistan and hosted 50 members delegation of ASEAN countries.
The house also lauded launch pad initiative of FPCCI that will support new start ups and innovative ideas of universities.
The President FPCCI also apprised the house about their meetings with Prime Minister of Pakistan and other important organizations regarding forthcoming budget including taxation and tariff related issues.
During the meeting, the house expressed their full confidence on President FPCCI and affirmed their commitment to providing their full support and cooperation in enhancing performance of FPCCI.
The house also commended the efforts of President FPCCI for the approval of Trade Organization Amendment Bill, 2025 that will allow two years tenure of Office Bearers of Trade Bodies with a view to continue their policies and achievement of goals and targets.
The house also unanimously passed the resolution in the Executive Committee and Extra Ordinary General Body Meeting of FPCCI that allow the Office Bearers of FPCCI to extend and continue their tenure/ services in the year 2026 in order to align the tenure of FPCCI with the tenure of other trade bodies.
The house believed that the alignment of FPCCI elections with trade bodies will facilitate the smooth operations in policy advocacy, trade diplomacy and removal of trade bottleneck.
This will also help in policies continuity and representation of business interest at national and international level.
The resolution was presented by FPCCI Vice President Qurat-ul-Ain, who explained that if the FPCCI elections are not extended by one year, the election timelines of chambers across the country and the federation will fall out of sync, creating persistent problems in every election cycle.
She further pointed out that an anomaly still exists in the National Assembly: while the terms for chambers and trade organizations have been set at two years, there has been silence regarding the federation's term.
Regulation emphasized that if the National Assembly and the Cabinet approve the one-year extension for FPCCI elections, the matter will be permanently aligned.
The meeting was attended by members from across the federation and all four provinces, including UBG's Patron-in-Chief S.M. Tanveer.
The gathering also strongly appreciated the recent successes of the Pakistan Armed Forces against India and praised the political leadership.

KARACHI: The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has termed the Balochistan Green Energy and Industrial Development Conference a promising step for the country's future. The event was held at Federation House, Karachi, in collaboration with the Balochistan Board of Investment and Trade (BBoIT) on Tuesday. FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh said the conference would open new horizons for investment in the province. 'Balochistan has the potential to become the country's hub for green energy,' he noted, adding that FPCCI is committed to encouraging the business community across Pakistan to explore opportunities in energy, mines and minerals, food, and agriculture sectors. United Arab Emirates Consul General Bakhit Ateek Al-Rumaithi attended as the guest of honor. He expressed UAE's keen interest in investing across all key sectors of Balochistan. FPCCI Vice President and Regional Chairman Sindh Abdul Mohaimen Khan emphasized that the federation would motivate entrepreneurs nationwide to channel investments into the province. 'The energy, minerals, and agriculture sectors in Balochistan hold enormous promise,' he said. Mian Zahid Hussain, Chairman of FPCCI's Policy Advisory Board, observed that investments in Balochistan would bring high returns for both local and foreign investors. BBoIT Vice Chairman Bilal Khan Kakar also highlighted the province's opportunities, urging the business community to fully utilize FPCCI's apex platform for tapping into investment prospects. Senate passes Anti-Terrorism Bill amid opposition walkout
ISLAMABAD: Amidst strong opposition, the Senate, Tuesday, passed three government bills including the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill, 2025, that allows detention of suspects at the hands of law enforcement agencies for more than three months. On the last day of the 353rd session, State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry presented the bill in the House that met strong opposition. Last week, the bill was passed by the National Assembly where it faced strong opposition too. In the Senate meeting, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Parliamentary Leader Ali Zafar criticised the powers given to the law enforcement agencies to detain any suspect without presenting them in a court of law for three months. 'The country is burning in the fire of terrorism,' responded Law Minister Azam Tarar, defending the bill, saying it aimed at countering terrorism. Kamran Murtaza from Jamiat Uelma-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) criticised the treasury side for presenting the bill for passage without having it referred to the relevant committee first. 'Heavens would not have fallen had this bill been referred to the committee,' he said. The bill was finally passed by the House by majority vote following which the PTI staged a walkout from the House in protest. The Section 3(a)(1) of the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2025 provides that the government or— the armed forces or civil armed forces - for a period not exceeding three months - issue an order for the preventative detention of any person who has been concerned in 'any offence under this Act relating to the security or defence of Pakistan or any part thereof, or public order relating to target killing, kidnapping for ransom, and extortion, bhatta, or the maintenance of supplies or services, or against whom a reasonable complaint has been made or credible information has been received, or a reasonable suspicion exists of his having been so concerned, for purpose of inquiry: Provided that the detention of such person, including detention for a further period after three months, shall be subject to the provision of Article l0 of the Constitution.' The Section 3(b) of the bill says, 'Provided that where the detention order has been issued by the armed forces or civil armed forces under Sub-section (1), the inquiry shall be conducted by a joint investigation team (JIT) comprising of a police officer not below the rank of superintendent of police, intelligence agencies, civil armed forces, armed forces, and other law enforcing agencies.' The Section 3(c) of this bill says that Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill, 2025 shall remain in force for a period of three years from its commencement. Apart from Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Act, 2025, the other two bills passed by the House were Petroleum (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and Pakistan Land Port Authority Bill, 2025. The Petroleum (Amendment) Bill, 2025 aims at introducing 'IT-based tracking of petroleum products, to curb the smuggling of petroleum products.' The Pakistan Land Port Authority Bill, 2025 aims to 'establish a land port authority to provide and administer an integrated system of facilities for cross-border movement of goods and passengers at land ports in Pakistan and to make provision for its operation, management, development of land port and matters connected therewith and ancillary matter.' Through resolutions, the Senate extended the Capital Development Authority Amendment Ordinance 2025 and the National Agri-Trade and Food Safety Authority Ordinance, 2025 for 120 days. Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry, in a written reply shared in the Senate Question House, said that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) dismissed its 51 employees in the last three years for 'suspected collusion with human smugglers.' Senate passes six private members' bills
ISLAMABAD: The Senate of Pakistan, on Monday, unanimously, passed six private members' bills. In a significant legislative development, the Senate, unanimously, passed six private members' bills, reflecting cross-party support on key issues. The Lower House passed six bills: the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2023; the Pakistan Council for Science and Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2023; the Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024; the Higher Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024; the Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (Amendment) Bill, 2024; and the Islamabad Capital Territory Prohibition on Employment of Children Bill, 2022. The house also introduced 'The Fatima University of Science and Technology Bill, 2025.' The chair referred the bill to the relevant Standing Committee of the House. Senator Sarmad Ali withdrew his two bills; 'The Social Media (Age-Restricted Users) Bill, 2025' and 'The Islamabad Capital; Territory Prohibition of Corporal Punishment Bill, 2021' through motion under Rule 115. The Senate deferred three bills on the request of the movers. These were 'The Pakistan Penal Code (Amendment) Bill, 2024 (seeking amendment to Section 377 of PPC)', 'The Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Bill, 2024', and 'the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill, 2025'. The object and reasons of The Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2023, states: 'The amendment is proposed to prescribe qualification for private members, with an aim to ensure competence and effective management of the affairs and responsibilities of the Board, as well as, Public Procurement Regulatory Authority.' The Clause four of the bill says, '(4A) The Members referred to in entry (7) of sub-section (2), shall be the persons of Integrity, possessing qualifications, and at least fifteen years' experience in public administration, economics, legal matters, finance, engineering or related technical fields.' The purpose of 'The Pakistan Council for Science and Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2023' aims at prescribing the provision regarding oversight of Parliament upon working of the Council by submission of annual report in the both the Houses. According to clause two, 'The Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024,' 'Rape, molestation or sexual intercourse of any kind to any human corpse. - Whoever commits rape, molestation or sexual intercourse of any kind to any human corpse shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or imprisonment of either description for a term which shall not be less than fourteen years and fine which may extend to one million rupees but not less than five hundred thousand rupees.' The Higher Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024 aims at prescribing the provision regarding oversight of Parliament upon working of the Commission by submission of annual report in both the Houses. The purpose of 'The Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (Amendment) Bill, 2024'to include seven non-official members to be appointed by the federal government one each from the provinces, Islamabad Capital Territory, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. The object and reasons of 'The Islamabad Capital Territory Prohibition on Employment of Children Bill, 2022', states 'Child labour is rampant in Islamabad Capital Territory. The children engaged in child labour are deprived of the pleasures of life. Most of these children are unaware of their basic rights as citizens of Pakistan and their access to education is also very limited. Due to economic pressures and hardships many adolescents are engaged in laborious jobs in the capital. The bill seeks to ban the employment of children but allows the employment of adolescents in certain non-hazardous tasks because imposition of complete ban on the employment of adolescents would deprive their families of livelihood as their parents find it hard to earn just enough money to live on, so they are left with no option but to depend on the income of their children. The bill also strives to provide protection to the adolescent workers as enunciated in different International Instruments and the Constitution of Pakistan.
