Raksha Bandhan: A celebration of all bonds that matter

Saturday, August 9, is the festival of Raksha Bandhan, and, as ever, I find its deeper implications fascinating. The origin story goes that Indra, king of the celestials, had to fight big, bad Vritra, a powerful negative force who wanted to take over and rule the world. Indra, as the leader of the celestials, was duty-bound to fight him to protect the universe. He fought very hard, to the point of fighting just for survival, but kept being bested. Rishi Dadhichi, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, had a body suffused with extraordinary spiritual power that could manifest as physical strength. The gods asked him to surrender his body so that Indra could fashion a weapon from his bones. Dadhichi gladly did so and sat down to meditate on Lord Shiva, who, the belief goes, is the 'prana' or breath that keeps us alive, the only barrier between life and death. Rishi Dadhichi sent himself into samadhi, a state of deep concentration and inner withdrawal, through which he willed his breath to leave his body. Indra thus obtained his Vajra or thunderbolt from Rishi Dadhichi's bones. But that alone was not enough. Indra's inner spirit had to be made strong again after the psychological damage caused by repeatedly losing to Vritra. Indra's wife, Shachi Devi, then tied a thread that she had prayed over on his fighting wrist. In the next battle, when he felt that he was going under, the sight of that thread gave him back his fighting spirit, and he made an enormous effort, drawing on every last bit of his strength and will to win. He managed to vanquish Vritra once and for all. He succeeded in saving the world, his, and ours, from a cruel, dangerous would-be tyrant. Shachi Devi became known thereafter as 'Indrashakti Shachi'. This, I discovered later, was the official name given to one of the queens of Thailand in the 20th century.

The Great Indian Kapil Show: Shilpa Shetty roasts sister Shamita Shetty, Huma Qureshi's mother warns Kapil Sharma. Watch

As India gears up to celebrate Raksha Bandhan on August 9, The Great Indian Kapil Show is bringing together two of Bollywood's most beloved sibling duos, Shilpa Shetty and Shamita Shetty, and Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem, for a fun-filled festive episode. A promo of the upcoming episode, leaked on social media, promises laughter, teasing, and plenty of sibling banter as the guests hilariously call each other out. Shamita Shetty and Shilpa Shetty, Huma Qureshi with her brother Saqib Saleem and mother, grace Kapil Sharma's show. Shilpa Shetty roasts Shamita Shetty on Kapil Sharma's show In the promo video, Shilpa jokes about Kapil Sharma's weight loss, to which he quips back that he must've learnt it from her, joking that he's growing shorter by the year. When Kapil asks if Shamita shares everything with her sister, Shilpa replies, 'She only hides boyfriend matters with me.' Shamita quickly responds that she doesn't hide it anymore, and Shilpa confirms, 'It's because she's single now.' Kapil cheekily asks Shamita, 'Otherwise you like men, right?' to which she exclaims, 'Of course!' — leaving her sister in splits. Shilpa doesn't hold back and even roasts Shamita's dating choices. When Sunil (dressed as a girl) asks, 'What should one see in a man?' Huma says, 'Handsome, tall,' and Shamita adds, 'Intelligence.' Shilpa then turns to her sister and quips, 'Lekin tu fir intelligence dekhti kyun nahi hai? Sirf body dekhti hai' (But then why don't you look at intelligence? You only look at the body). Huma Qureshi's mother warns Kapil Sharma Meanwhile, Huma and Saqib make a dramatic entry holding a giant rakhi to tie on Kapil. Later, Kapil is seen interacting with Huma's mother, who is in the audience. Jokingly, he says, 'I got married waiting for Huma,' to which her mother replies, 'Vo shuru se aapko bhai bolti hai, aur uski laaj rakhna chahiye aapko, nahi manoge to fir…' (She's been calling you 'brother' from the beginning, and you should respect that. If you don't, then…). A startled Kapil is then heard saying, 'Inka koi mike band karo, gundi hai aapki mummy?' (Turn off her mic — is your mum a goon?). About The Great Indian Kapil Show Hosted by Kapil Sharma, the show blends sketch comedy, celebrity interviews, and stand-up, with a familiar ensemble cast including Sunil Grover, Kiku Sharda, and Krushna Abhishek. The latest season has seen Navjot Singh Sidhu return as a permanent guest alongside Archana Puran Singh. A new twist this season allows fans to take the stage and showcase their talent. New episodes stream every Saturday on Netflix.

Ad review: Sugar Free D'lite's #CaloriesSeRaksha taps into sibling banter, but does the brand stick?

New Delhi: Festive weeks in India often come with a sugar overload, both in what's eaten and gifted. Hoping to ride the wave of health-conscious indulgence, Zydus Wellness has launched a limited-edition Rakhi gifting campaign for its Sugar Free D'lite range, featuring zero-added-sugar cookies and chocolates. The digital campaign, titled #CaloriesSeRaksha, stars Mallika Dua and Chetan Goel, two creators known for their comic takes on societal norms. The film revolves around Dua mock-pitching her brother to a prospective match, listing his 'green flags" while slyly roasting his expectations from arranged marriages. It's designed to be a light take on Rakhi and relationships. The narrative is topical and witty, leveraging two familiar creator voices to push a festive message. But while the performance is sharp, the brand role feels secondary. Dua's screen presence takes over, and Goel plays the straight man, almost fading into the setup. The product only shows up right at the end, in a typical 'here's the gift" moment. Zydus' broader strategy here is clear: talk health without sounding preachy. That means creators > celebrities; humour > emotional nostalgia; and short-form > long-format storytelling. In that sense, this campaign aligns with the digital-first codes of 2025 festive advertising. But does it do enough to build memorability? That's debatable. #CaloriesSeRaksha is a clever wordplay, the ad is watchable, and the theme is familiar. Yet, it doesn't push creative boundaries or offer a unique take on sibling gifting. Unlike some of the more evocative festive campaigns by legacy players like Cadbury or Tanishq, this one feels more functional. Still, in the scroll-first economy, relatability may be all it takes. The Rakhi packs are now live on Blinkit, Flipkart, and offline retail, giving Sugar Free D'lite a small but noticeable play in festive snacking.
