A basement restaurant that made the Michelin Guide and was named as one of Wales's finest has announced plans to close. Sheeps and Leeks on Stryd Y Porth Mawr/Eastgate Street in Caernarfon was opened by chef Paul Hearn back in 2019.
The unassuming former shop features a ground floor kitchen and a basement restaurant with just six tables. Despite its modest restaurant, the venue went into the Michelin Guide.
It was later named Welsh 'Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year' at the Prestige Wales Awards 2023.
But it has now announced it will close next month.
In a statement, they said: "It's with heavy hearts that we share the news that Sheeps And Leeks will be closing its doors at 12 Eastgate Street after our final service on Thursday 31st July.
"This has been an incredibly difficult decision, driven by ever-rising costs that are set to continue. But please know — this is not necessarily the end of Sheeps And Leeks. The brand will live on, with plans for pop-ups, a food range, and the possibility of finding a new home at another site in the future.
"We're so proud of everything we've achieved at this site over the last six years — from multiple awards to the wonderful memories created with all of you, our amazing guests, supporters, and friends.
"A huge thank you to all of our staff, past and present — you've been part of this epic journey and helped shape Sheeps And Leeks into what it became.
"I'm deeply grateful to my friends and family who gave up their time and energy to help get the restaurant off the ground — I couldn't have done it without you. We encourage our fellow foodies to use any outstanding gift cards between now and our final service. Any gift cards that are still valid as of today's date will be fully reimbursed if not redeemed." . Train passengers face potential 5.8% fares hike

The Office for National Statistics said Retail Price Index (RPI) inflation rose to 4.8% in July. The Government has not confirmed how it will determine the cap on regulated fare rises in 2026, but this year's 4.6% hike was one percentage point above RPI in July 2024. If that formula is used to set next year's fare increase, the cost of train travel will jump by 5.8%. Pressure group Railfuture recently told the PA news agency 'it would be outrageous' if fares even rose by as much as 5.5%, with train punctuality in Britain at its lowest level in more than five years. About 45% of fares on Britain's railways are regulated by the Westminster, Scottish and Welsh Governments. They include season tickets on most commuter journeys, some off-peak return tickets on long-distance routes, and flexible tickets for travel around major cities. The Department for Transport (DfT) said there will be an update on changes to regulated fares later this year. Operators set rises in unregulated fares, although these are likely to be very close to regulated ticket increases because their decisions are heavily influenced by governments. Office of Rail and Road figures show trains in Britain reached 66.7% of scheduled stops within a minute of the timetable in the year to July 19. That is the worst performance since the year to May 30 2020. Some operators are currently struggling with dry weather. A lack of moisture in clay soil embankments has disturbed track levels, preventing trains from safely travelling at full speed in parts of south-west and south-east England. A DfT spokesperson said: 'The Transport Secretary has made clear her number one priority is getting the railways back to a place where people can rely on them. 'The Government is putting passengers at the heart of its plans for public ownership and Great British Railways (GBR), delivering the services they deserve and driving growth. 'No decisions have been made on next year's rail fares but our aim is that prices balance affordability for both passengers and taxpayers.' The Government is nationalising train operators as their contracts expire. GBR is an upcoming public sector body that will oversee Britain's rail infrastructure and train operation.

The house has four bedrooms and versatile spaces that can be remodelled and updated to suit a new owner's needs or a development project for someone looking for an investment - be it as a landlord or to sell on to earn a potential profit. Outside the house can offer a large rear garden. The house has two large reception rooms (Image: Paul Fosh Auctions) ‌ Sean continues: "I believe this property lends itself to many opportunities, subject to planning permission being obtained. There would be the option to refurbish and re-sell on to the open market. Most stock that has sold recently has been comparable as a three bedroom while The Willows has the advantage of being bigger and offering four bedrooms. 'If The Willows could be refurbished back to a high standard local demand for a high-quality refurbished property would be attractive both to local families or to investors. The house has a hidden fourth floor - a basement that contains four rooms (Image: Paul Fosh Auctions) ‌ 'Another option for The Willows could be to renovate to a high standard and rent out on the holiday market." Sean continues. "Again, being a four bedroom with its central location in Pembrokeshire it could be in high demand and can be rented out via many expert holiday agents to maximise your returns. "A property of four bedrooms would achieve a holiday rental figure of £44,400 gross over a year, if it was to be rented out as a holiday let, accepts pets and be of a high standard." Four bedrooms can be found across the two upper floors. (Image: Paul Fosh Auctions) ‌ Sean goes on to say that alternatively, the property could be rented out on the open market as a long term let to a family for around £1,500-£1,600 per calendar month, with four-bedroom properties in short supply on the rental market and with comparable are online showing rents generated between £1,500-£2,000 per calendar month. There would be the option to refurbish and re-sell on to the open market, of course, and using Rightmove information based on Land Registry data, most stock that has sold recently in the local area has been comparable as a three bedroom, while The Willows can boast four bedrooms. Two bathrooms include this one with a charming fireplace - unusual and quirky (Image: Paul Fosh Auctions) ‌ According to Rightmove, recent local sales within the town include 40 Merlin's Hill which sold for £275,000 in March 2025, 1 Beech Tree Gardens which welcomed a new owner after changing hands in June 2024 for £378,000, and 27 Cherry Trees, that sold in December 2023 for £275,000. The Willows is on Merlin's Terrace between its junctions with Augustine Way and Freemen's Way. Public transport links include Haverfordwest mainline rail station together with a network of local bus services serving the surrounding vicinity. Good sized garden (Image: Paul Fosh Auctions) Article continues below Road links include the A40 which links to the M4 to the east via the A48. An extensive range of shopping amenities, cafes, bars and restaurants can be found locally in Haverfordwest.
