‘Morning Joe': Scarborough Scoffs at ‘Idiotic' Plan to Gerrymander Texas Further
Texas Republicans are trying to gerrymander the state even further in their favor, and on Tuesday morning, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough could do nothing but scoff at how 'idiotic' their plan is, on top of being anti-democratic.
During their discussion, the 'Morning Joe' hosts zeroed in on the fact that Texas Democrats deliberately left the state this week, to avoid Republicans forcing through a vote to redraw the districts and grab another five house seats. More than that, the MSNBC hosts scoffed at the response of Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows, who angrily said that the politicians 'abandoned their posts and turned their backs on the constituents they swore to represent.'

'Oh, my goodness, it's almost like Lincoln talking to Congress at the beginning of the Civil War. The stakes are so high. Oh wait, no they're not Willie!' Scarborough mocked. 'To do what's right for the people of Texas? To take the vote away from anybody in Texas who's basically a Democrat by gerrymandering the districts?'
Scarborough then explained how the redistricting would be 'so out of whack' that, even if state legislative races came down to a 50/50 split by voters, Republicans would still win handily.
'That guy, and the rest of the Texas legislature, and Greg Abbott want to rig the system,' Scarborough said. 'They want to make sure that Republicans are over-represented on election day. They want to rig the process. And so they're acting so indignant about it!'
The MSNBC host then called out the 'short-sightedness' of the Republicans' plan, arguing that it would open the door for blue states to do the exact same thing.
'If Texas achieves what they want to achieve, then California will go back! And then they will draw up even more rigged lines that will help Democrats,' Scarborough said. 'And New York State will do it, and who knows? Maybe then Florida decides to — I mean, it really is, it's an idiotic thing to do.'
'They used to do it every 10 years, and now, I don't know if the President told them to do this or somebody else told them to do it, but it's just stupid,' he continued. 'And worse than that, it's just not right.'

Rachel Maddow Is Not Mincing Words When It Comes To The "Authoritarian" Nature Of The Trump Administration
MSNBC's Rachel Maddow says Americans no longer have to fear potential authoritarianism in their own country, because 'we are there' already — and cited President Donald Trump's widespread immigration raids, detainments without probable cause, and use of military force. 'We have crossed a line,' she said on The Rachel Maddow Show, Monday. 'We are in a place we did not want to be, but we are there. The thing we were all warning about for the last few years is not coming, it is here. We are in it. This is what [it's] like, it turns out.' Maddow argued that large swaths of the country might easily overlook this downward slide, as movies are still being produced, sports continue to be played, and families are still discussing the same old issues they always have around their kitchen table each night. 'But also, at the same time, life in the United States is profoundly changing,' Maddow added Monday. 'It's profoundly different than it was even six months ago, because we do now live in a country that has an authoritarian leader in charge.' Related: She then put it even more bluntly: 'We have a consolidating dictatorship in our country.' While the MSNBC host went on to acknowledge that this might sound 'melodramatic,' Maddow noted the US now seems to have its own 'secret police,' which is commonplace across dictatorships, in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency under Trump. 'A massive, anonymous, unbadged — literally masked — totally unaccountable internal police force that apparently has infinite funding but no identifiable leadership,' said Maddow. 'And they act in ways designed to instill maximum fear and use maximum force.' Related: Maddow continued: 'I mean, when you imagine an authoritarian country, what you imagine is masked secret police breaking people's car windows and snatching people off the streets and out of church parking lots and courtroom hallways and taking them away with no charges, no notice, no paperwork, no explanation, not letting them see lawyers and then moving them secretly to what are effectively black site prisons where they won't tell you who's there and where no one's allowed in to see what's going on.' Experts have already warned that one such prison, Florida's immigrant detention camp that Republicans have dubbed 'Alligator Alcatraz,' is 'a human rights disaster waiting to happen.' Democratic lawmakers initially blocked from visiting were finally granted access last month and confirmed its horrid conditions. Maddow argued it won't stop there, however, and that the US military in multiple states has already 'extended the legal boundaries of nearby military bases' by hundreds of miles 'so they can give active duty US troops the power to arrest and search people on US soil.' 'We are not heading toward something like this,' Maddow said Monday. 'We are there. It is here. It is the environment in which we are now living. And so, given that you now live in a country with an authoritarian leader, the question is: What can you do for your country?' Democratic lawmaker introduces resolution opposing clemency for Ghislaine Maxwell
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) introduced a resolution Tuesday urging President Trump and the Department of Justice not to offer any form of clemency in exchange for Ghislaine Maxwell's testimony about the crimes of diseased convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Krishnamoorthi introduced his resolution after several Republican senators warned that granting a pardon to Maxwell or reducing her 20-year prison sentence for sexually exploiting teenage girls would be a bad idea. The Democratic resolution affirms that Maxwell's conviction and sentencing 'were more than warranted by the facts, and any receipt of a pardon, commutation, or other form of clemency by Ghislaine Maxwell would deny survivors the justice they deserve.' The resolution formally opposes the granting of a pardon or other form of clemency. Krishnamoorthi said in a statement that Maxwell 'enabled one of the most appalling child exploitation networks in modern history. Her conviction was not only just, it was necessary.' 'The idea that she could now bargain for clemency insults every survivor and undermines our justice system. The message must be clear: no one gets to traffic children and then negotiate their way out of accountability,' he said. At least eight Democrats have already joined Krishnamoorthi in introducing the resolution: Reps. Emanuel Cleaver (Mo.), Lou Correa (Calif.), Nabeela Syed Ansari (Ariz.), Dan Goldman (N.Y.), Shri Thanedar (Mich.), Dina Titus (Nev.), Suhas Subramanyam (Va.) and Eric Swalwell (Calif.). The resolution is the latest example of bipartisan concern on Capitol Hill that the Trump administration may reduce Maxwell's sentence if she testifies about which powerful and connected elites participated or did not participate in Epstein's illicit activities. Several Republican senators told The Hill that it would be a mistake for Trump to grant Maxwell a pardon or allow his administration to reduce her sentence. 'It's ridiculous that he would consider shortening a sentence for somebody who aided and abetted sexual trafficking as she did,' said a Republican senator who requested anonymity to comment on the sensitive topic. 'She's trafficking underage children. I can't imagine anything she could say could nullify her heinous crimes,' the senator added. Trump hasn't ruled out a pardon for Maxwell though he says that no one has approached him about the possibility. 'I'm allowed to do it, but nobody's asked me to do it,' he told Newsmax Friday. 'I know nothing about the case.'

Hate crimes hit second largest record in 2024: FBI
Hate crimes in the United States last year hit their second-largest total since the FBI started keeping data, in a sign that bias-motivated crimes aren't subsiding, according to new numbers. The big picture: Although overall hate crimes decreased by 1.5% in 2024 from the year prior, advocates say the high numbers show Jewish Americans, Muslim Americans and LGBTQ+ residents are still targets for bias attacks. By the numbers: Law enforcement agencies reported 11,679 criminal cases of hate crime last year, the FBI said Tuesday. In 2023, the nation saw a record high of 11,862 hate crime cases, according to an Axios analysis of FBI data. In addition, the FBI reported 13,683 related offenses as being motivated by bias toward race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender, and gender identity. Zoom in: More than half of hate crimes involved attacks involving race or ethnicity, the FBI Crime Data Explorer database showed. Black Americans were the most targeted group, followed by Jewish Americans, then gay men, according to the numbers. Around 17% of all hate crimes involved sexual orientations. Sikhs remain the third most-targeted religious group behind the Jewish and Muslim communities. Caveat: Just over 16,000 agencies participated in the hate crime collection with the FBI, with a population coverage of 95.1% of the U.S. population. That gap could mean more hate crimes in the U.S. are going unreported, advocates say. What they're saying: "The record-high number of anti-Jewish hate crime incidents tracked by the FBI in 2024 is consistent with (Anti-Defamation League)'s reporting," ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said. "We're facing a crisis of hate and extremism that threatens all of us and the core of our democracy," Jewish Council for Public Affairs CEO Amy Spitalnick said. "Arab Americans, Asian Americans, Black Americans, Jewish Americans, the Latino community, the LGBTQ community, immigrants and others have long sounded the alarm — this violence is not new, it simply remains unaddressed," Arab American Institute executive director Maya Berry said. Between the lines: Anti-Muslim and anti-Arab hate crimes appeared to have leveled off slightly last year, but the numbers are still alarming, analyst Brian Levin told Axios. However, it appears that anti-Jewish hate crimes are still near or around record levels, he said. Anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish hate crimes tend to rise during conflicts in the Middle East, he said.
