Indonesian rape suspect who escaped Sibu lock-up recaptured after midnight manhunt
SIBU, June 23 — An Indonesian detainee who escaped from the Sibu Central Police Station lock-up at around 4 pm last Saturday was recaptured early this morning.
The 25-year-old suspect was re-arrested at Lorong Terap, approximately 1.4km from the station, at around 12.30 am.
'The suspect was still in handcuffs and wearing the lock-up attire,' Sibu Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said in a statement here.
The suspect, who was under remand for investigation under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code for the offence of rape, was still in lawful police custody and was wearing the standard purple lock-up attire and handcuffs when he fled.
According to Zulkipli, following the escape incident, investigations are underway under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code, which provide for a prison sentence of up to two years, or a fine, or both.
Section 223 applies to officers whose negligence allows a detainee to escape, while Section 224 relates to detainees who flee from lawful custody.
Zulkipli expressed gratitude for the public's cooperation in providing information that led to the suspect's recapture, but at the same time advised the public not to speculate in ways that could interfere with the police investigation. — Bernama

Last Thursday, Bukit Aman said a university student was arrested under Op Pedo on April 29 for allegedly possessing 5,000 photos and videos of child and adult pornography. Siti Kamsiah Hassan, principal assistant director of Bukit Aman's sexual, women and child investigation division, said some of the materials were home-made, involving the student's two young cousins, aged four and nine.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police have busted a syndicate distributing vapes containing cocaine-laced liquids with the arrest of four suspects, including a Singaporean. Bukit Aman narcotics crime investigation department acting director Mat Zani @ Salahuddin Che Ali said the four, aged 25 to 57, were arrested near a hotel at Ampang Jaya on June 19, Utusan Malaysia reported. Police arrested three of the suspects in an MPV while another suspect was nabbed at the lobby of the hotel. He said the Singaporean, 31, is believed to be the mastermind of the syndicate. Police found 10 boxes containing 4,958 vape cartridges in the MPV. The cartridges were filled with 9.42 litres of liquid containing cocaine, with an estimated street value of RM7.29 million. Mat Zani said the syndicate had been operating since March from a luxury condominium unit they rented for RM300 a night in the city centre. The condo served as their base for packaging the vapes before distributing them overseas. He said the drugs were believed to have been smuggled into the country through a southern state. 'We believe the syndicate had used Malaysia as a transit point to smuggle drugs abroad through courier services. Each vape cartridge had 1.9ml (of cocaine), sold at RM1,500, and was good for 100 puffs. 'This is the latest threat to our country since cocaine is hard to acquire in Southeast Asia,' he said, adding that he believed the vapes were also being sold among the 'elites' in the country. One of the four suspects tested positive for ketamine, and two of them had criminal records for drug offences. They have been remanded until June 26 to assist in the investigations.

Indonesia is a major hub for drug trafficking in South-East Asia despite having strict drug laws, with convicted smugglers sometimes executed by firing squad. The head of the National Narcotic Agency, Marthinus Hukom, said the crackdown, launched between April and June across 20 provinces, also uncovered money laundering schemes by two drug syndicates and confiscated assets worth more than 26 billion rupiah (about $1.5 million). Thirty-six of the suspects, including 21 women, were paraded in front of reporters, along with confiscated drugs, in their orange prison uniforms and hands handcuffed. Hukom said the women arrested were mostly housewives. "I call on Indonesian women to be more vigilant in establishing friendships both in the real world and in cyberspace,' he said during a joint press conference with officials from the security affairs ministry and the customs office who took part in the operation. One of the agency's deputies, Budi Wibowo, said authorities seized 683,885 grams (0.68 ton) of crystal meth, marijuana, ecstasy, THC, hashish and amphetamines, adding this helped stop them falling into the hands of "more than 1.3 million people.' Hasan said the number increased in 2024 with more than 56,000 cases and confiscated 7.5 tons of crystal meth and 3.3 tons of marijuana, with a combine value worth 7.5 trillion rupiah ($454.6 million). Authorities have arrested a total of 27,357 drug suspects by November 2024, he said. Early this month, three British nationals accused of smuggling nearly a kilogram (over two pounds) of cocaine into Indonesia were charged in a court on the tourist island of Bali. They face the death penalty under the country's strict drug laws. About 530 people, including 96 foreigners, are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug-related crimes, the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections' data showed.
