PETALING JAYA : Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki should replace Fadhlina Sidek as education minister, as she has failed to adequately address bullying issues in schools, said Alor Setar MP Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden.
Referring to the case in Melaka last month, Afnan said Asyraf was quick to expel six students from a Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) after they were found to be involved in bullying.
'I think he should be the education minister. The only issue is that he has not won (a parliamentary seat),' Malaysiakini quoted the PAS MP as saying at a press conference in Parliament today.
'I pray that he will win in the upcoming elections so that he can replace the education minister.'
The six students from a Melaka MRSM were not the first to be kicked out after being implicated in a bullying incident.
In April, seven students at an MRSM in Penang were expelled for bullying a fellow resident, and two months later, six students who bullied a 14-year-old student at an MRSM in Besut, Terengganu, were also expelled.
Commenting on public concern over the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir, Afnan said parents are increasingly worried about sending their children to school, and are losing trust in the educational institutions.
'The education minister has given assurances that our schools are safe, but the public does not want verbal assurances alone (as) the situation has become severe, with many bullying cases occurring in our schools,' he said.
Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital the following day.
A post-mortem has been completed after her body was exhumed.
Several demonstrations were held across Sabah to demand justice for Zara.

Bangladesh Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus visits Malaysia for official talks

SEPANG: The Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh, Dr Muhammad Yunus, arrived in Malaysia today for a three-day official visit. He was invited by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to discuss key bilateral matters. The commercial flight carrying Yunus and his delegation landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 at 7.47 pm. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail welcomed them at the Bunga Raya Complex of KLIA. Yunus inspected a guard of honour consisting of 28 officers and personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment. The visit reciprocates Anwar's official trip to Bangladesh in October 2024, according to Wisma Putra. Tomorrow, Yunus will attend an official welcoming ceremony at Perdana Putra Complex. He will then hold a bilateral meeting with Anwar to review Malaysia-Bangladesh relations. Key discussion areas include trade, investment, labour, education, tourism, and defence. Both leaders will also exchange views on regional and international developments. Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed during the visit. The MoUs cover defence, energy, strategic studies, semiconductor capacity building, and trade promotion. An Exchange of Notes will also be signed for diplomatic training and higher education. Anwar will host an official luncheon at Seri Perdana Complex in honour of Yunus and his delegation. On Wednesday, Yunus will deliver a public lecture at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He will also be conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business by UKM. Yunus will engage with members of the Yunus Social Business Centre community during his visit. In 2024, Malaysia-Bangladesh trade reached RM13.35 billion, marking a 5.1 per cent increase from 2023. Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner in South Asia. Major Malaysian exports to Bangladesh include petroleum products, palm oil, and chemicals. Imports from Bangladesh consist of textiles, footwear, and manufactured goods. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in areas of mutual benefit. Diplomatic ties between Malaysia and Bangladesh were established in 1972. - Bernama

Hold more interfaith gatherings to foster harmony — Dr Annuar

(From left) Dr Annuar being briefed by Manogaran on the newly-built Sri Mahariamman Temple. SIBU (Aug 11): Religious organisations should hold more interfaith gatherings to further strengthen harmony among people of different beliefs, said Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee. The state Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development suggested that Sri Maha Mariamman Temple president Manogaran Krishnasamy host an interfaith Deevapali celebration involving about 500 people at the new temple at Jalan Orchid here. 'In Sarawak, religious harmony is well exemplified, particularly in Sibu along Jalan Awang Ramli Amit, where a church, a mosque, and Sikh and Hindu temples coexist, fostering mutual respect among people of various faiths,' said the Nangka assemblyman when met after presenting a Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant to the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple. Adding on, Dr Annuar said such events would encourage people of different religions to visit the temple, enhance mutual understanding, and promote both racial and religious unity. He also noted that other places of worship, such as the Al-Qadim Mosque, had welcomed visitors from various faiths. Prior to the visit, Dr Annuar also presented an MRP grant to Gurdwara Sahib Sibu. Bukit Aman task force takes over probe into Zara Qairina's death

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — A special nine-member task force from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been deployed to Sabah to take over the investigation into Zara Qairina Mahathir's case. In a statement, the Office of the Inspector-General of Police Secretariat (Corporate Communications) said the deployment is part of the Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) commitment to ensure a transparent, professional, and thorough investigation. 'PDRM views every loss of life seriously. As such, we urge the public to allow the authorities to carry out their duties professionally and to refrain from making any speculation that could disrupt the investigation process,' the statement read. Last Friday, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) announced that the remains of 13-year-old Zara Qairina needed to be exhumed to enable a post-mortem to be conducted. The AGC stated that there is a need for further investigation to be carried out by PDRM to ensure that all aspects of the case can be thoroughly examined. The exhumation of the 13-year-old's body at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery, Kampung Mesapol was done on Saturday, and subsequently transported to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. The remains were reburied at the same cemetery early this morning. Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17. The student had been taken to the hospital after being found severely injured and unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar at 4am on July 16. — Bernama
