AMMAN — On the occasion of the World Health Day, celebrated this year with the theme: "My health, my right," Director of the Human Rights Unit at the Prime Ministry Khalil Abdallat on Monday highlighted Jordan's strong commitment to creating an inclusive and fair healthcare system.
Abdallat noted that the World Health Day emphasises His Majesty King Abdullah's strategic focus on improving the Kingdom's healthcare sector, which is essential for national development and societal well-being, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
"We have consistently worked to enhance infrastructure, broaden the reach of services, and ensure comprehensive care for all, especially for vulnerable groups," he said.
He pointed out that Jordan has become a "leader" in the region when it comes to healthcare delivery and expertise, thanks to "advanced" facilities and a "highly" skilled workforce.
"Following the King's vision, the government is actively modernising the healthcare system through reforms that improve service accessibility, staff training, and focus on preventive care, with particular attention to maternal and child health," Abdallat added.
He noted that Jordan's National Health Strategy focuses on improving service quality, effective governance, strong health information systems, and ensuring universal healthcare access, where this strategy aligns with broader national plans for economic and administrative modernisation.
Abdallat also underscored Jordan's active role in health diplomacy.
"By forming strategic partnerships with organisations such as the WHO, UNICEF, and UNHCR, Jordan has become a regional centre for health expertise," he said.
"We are dedicated to training medical professionals across the region and operating field hospitals in conflict zones, reflecting our belief in the universal right to health," Abdallat noted.
He highlighted Jordan's leadership in providing healthcare to refugees, a role that is further strengthened through international cooperation.
"Our field hospitals in Gaza and the West Bank stand as symbols of our commitment to vulnerable populations and our advocacy for regional peace," Abdallat said.
He said that Jordan remains dedicated to aligning its healthcare laws with international human rights standards.
Abdallat referred to agreements such as the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 3, which focuses on health and well-being.

Jordan suspends poultry imports from Brazil over Avian Influenza concerns
AMMAN — The Ministry of Agriculture on Sunday announced the suspension of imports of live poultry and untreated poultry products from Brazil following the confirmation of Avian Influenza cases in the South American country. The ministry said the move is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting animal health, public safety, and national food security, in line with Jordan's risk management protocols, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The suspension would remain in effect until further notice to be reviewed once the epidemiological situation in Brazil improves, the ministry said. "The measure was based on veterinary risk assessments and international surveillance data. It applies to all types of live birds and poultry products that have not undergone sufficient heat to neutralise the virus." The ministry also noted that poultry products that have been properly thermally processed and proven safe through international health standards are exempt from the ban, adding that it was closely monitoring animal health developments in exporting countries through coordination with the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and other international monitoring bodies. It also stressed its readiness to take further necessary steps to safeguard public health and the integrity of Jordan's agricultural sector.

Jordan ranks 99th globally in Human Development Index
Jordan has ranked 99th out of 193 countries in the 2025 Human Development Index (HDI), according to the latest quarterly report from the Executive Program for the Economic Modernization Vision (EMV) 2023–2025, Jordan News Agency (Petra) reported. The Jordanian government introduced several initiatives aimed at boosting human development indicators, particularly in healthcare and education. In the healthcare sector, the government has implemented updated guidelines for healthcare providers, with a special focus on improving maternal and child health services at primary health centers. The goal is to enhance the quality of care for vulnerable populations. Additionally, unified clinical protocols have been introduced for breast cancer management, while ongoing work is being done to revise guidelines for chronic disease management, including for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses. In education, the Ministry of Education has reviewed all programs related to sustainable development education, both those operated by the ministry and those managed by partner organizations. This effort aligns with Jordan's national initiative for 2024, aimed at promoting sustainable education practices across the country. The government has also received UNESCO approval to shift the responsibility of implementing a capacity-building project for local development directorates to the municipalities. Workshops have already been conducted to facilitate this transition, ensuring smooth implementation at the local level.
