Jordan marks World Health Day with 'commitment' to inclusive healthcare
Director of the Human Rights Unit at the Prime Ministry Khalil Abdallat says that the World Health Day emphasises His Majesty King Abdullah's strategic focus on improving the Kingdom's healthcare sector (Petra photo) AMMAN — On the occasion of the World Health Day, celebrated this year with the theme: "My health, my right," Director of the Human Rights Unit at the Prime Ministry Khalil Abdallat on Monday highlighted Jordan's strong commitment to creating an inclusive and fair healthcare system. Abdallat noted that the World Health Day emphasises His Majesty King Abdullah's strategic focus on improving the Kingdom's healthcare sector, which is essential for national development and societal well-being, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. "We have consistently worked to enhance infrastructure, broaden the reach of services, and ensure comprehensive care for all, especially for vulnerable groups," he said. He pointed out that Jordan has become a "leader" in the region when it comes to healthcare delivery and expertise, thanks to "advanced" facilities and a "highly" skilled workforce. "Following the King's vision, the government is actively modernising the healthcare system through reforms that improve service accessibility, staff training, and focus on preventive care, with particular attention to maternal and child health," Abdallat added. He noted that Jordan's National Health Strategy focuses on improving service quality, effective governance, strong health information systems, and ensuring universal healthcare access, where this strategy aligns with broader national plans for economic and administrative modernisation. Abdallat also underscored Jordan's active role in health diplomacy. "By forming strategic partnerships with organisations such as the WHO, UNICEF, and UNHCR, Jordan has become a regional centre for health expertise," he said. "We are dedicated to training medical professionals across the region and operating field hospitals in conflict zones, reflecting our belief in the universal right to health," Abdallat noted. He highlighted Jordan's leadership in providing healthcare to refugees, a role that is further strengthened through international cooperation. "Our field hospitals in Gaza and the West Bank stand as symbols of our commitment to vulnerable populations and our advocacy for regional peace," Abdallat said. He said that Jordan remains dedicated to aligning its healthcare laws with international human rights standards. Abdallat referred to agreements such as the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 3, which focuses on health and well-being.

"On International Women's Day, we stand proudly before the achievements of Jordanian women, which are the fruit of the wise Hashemite leadership's vision and the commitment of His Majesty King Abdullah and Her Majesty Queen Rania to establishing women's role as essential partners in nation-building and enhancing their status across various fields," Abdallat said. He noted that HRH Crown Prince Hussein continues to support young Jordanian women through innovative initiatives focused on skills development, encouraging innovation, and boosting women's participation in technology, entrepreneurship, and the competitive job market, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Recent years have witnessed fundamental reforms enhancing women's status and rights, Abdallat said, adding that the latest Constitutional amendments reinforced principles of equality and non-discrimination while boosting women's participation in public and political life. The comprehensive framework of political, economic, and public sector reforms has played a vital role in creating new opportunities for women and providing supportive environments for their participation in decision-making processes, he added. Abdallat noted that the government, following Royal directives, has enacted progressive policies and legislation aimed at empowering women and ensuring equal opportunities. These include strengthening women's representation in elected councils, launching economic programmes supporting female-led entrepreneurial projects, and enhancing legal and social protections for women across sectors, he pointed out. The past several years have also seen "substantial" amendments to labour laws aimed at improving the work environment for women, ensuring equal opportunities, and providing greater support for working mothers to enhance their economic and social stability. Abdallat stressed the importance of maximising women's roles across various sectors and strengthening their participation in political and parliamentary work. He highlighted that specialised parliamentary committees play a "key" role in drafting legislation and policies supporting women's rights and ensuring their empowerment in decision-making positions. Abdallat also underscored the pivotal role of the Jordanian National Committee for Women's Affairs in formulating national policies that promote women's rights and ensure the integration of their issues into development plans, contributing to a comprehensive approach that enhances women's standing in society. "Economic empowerment of women is a fundamental step towards achieving sustainable development," Abdallat said. "Modern economic reforms provide greater opportunities for women in entrepreneurship and innovation. The government, in partnership with the private sector, has supported small and medium enterprises managed by women and provided training programmes aimed at enhancing their ability to enter local and global markets, increasing their contribution to the national economy." Abdallat also highlighted Jordan's achievements in supporting refugee women, describing the Kingdom as an "exemplary model" in providing protection and care under King Abdullah's leadership. He noted that Jordan continues to ensure refugee women's rights through health, educational, social services, and economic empowerment. "Our vision for the future is based on building a state of law and institutions that guarantees the principles of equality, justice, and equity," Abdallat concluded. "Today, as we celebrate Jordanian women's achievements, we stress that the journey continues, and that Jordan, under its wise leadership, is moving forward in empowering women and enhancing their role, not just for their sake, but for a brighter future for Jordan and all Jordanians."

Abdallat highlights ongoing Royal efforts to support rights of persons with disabilities

Speaking at the conclusion of a specialised training course on disability rights and human rights, attended by representatives of national institutions and civil society organisations, Abdallat underscored Jordan's achievements in establishing a legislative and policy framework aligned with international standards, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. He added that this framework ensures justice, equality, and the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society. The course was held as part of preparations for Jordan's participation in the upcoming Global Disability Summit in Berlin, which will showcase His Majesty's leadership in advancing disability rights worldwide, Petra said. Abdallat highlighted the Kingdom's commitment to shaping global policies that enhance the rights and participation of persons with disabilities, reflecting Jordan's distinguished standing in this field. He also emphasised the role of HRH Crown Prince Hussein in fostering youth participation, including that of persons with disabilities and supporting their integration into society. Abdallat underscored the efforts of HH Prince Mired Bin Raad, Chairman of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, in spearheading national initiatives to empower persons with disabilities and ensure their full inclusion in the society.
