Fire guts vacant house in Coquitlam

The aftermath of a house fire near Gatensbury Street and Brisbane Avenue in Coquitlam is seen on Tuesday, Aug. 19.
A fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning that destroyed a vacant house is under investigation by Coquitlam firefighters and the RCMP.
Firefighters were called to the home in the 800 block of Gatensbury Street just before 1:30 a.m., and arrived to find the home fully engulfed in smoke and flames.
In an emailed statement to CTV News, Deputy Chief Chris Fox said 24 firefighters responded and had the fire under control within an hour.
There were no reported injuries.
'The fire caused extensive damage throughout the structure but was contained to the building of origin,' Fox wrote. 'The property has a prior demolition permit application on file with the city.'
The Coquitlam RCMP told CTV News the fire is subject to 'an active and ongoing investigation,' but did not provide further details.

Vancouver police said in a short statement just before 7 p.m. PT that they responded to a call of a dispute between two neighbours around 4 p.m. When police officers arrived at the scene, near the intersection of Rupert Street and Vanness Avenue, they said they found a man with a weapon. The VPD statement said the man was shot by police and later died at the scene despite life-saving efforts. Police have not specified the nature of the weapon or the identity of the individual. No one else was injured. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., which investigates all instances of death or serious harm that may have been the result of police action or inaction, is looking into the case. In its own statement, the IIO said that police were called to a residential building near the intersection where the shooting happened. The VPD said the case was an "unfolding investigation" and it would not provide further information at this point.

In a brief statement, the Vancouver Police Department said officers responded to a 911 call regarding a dispute between two neighbours near Rupert Street and Vanness Avenue around 4 p.m. 'When officers arrived, they encountered a man with a weapon and the suspect was shot by police,' the VPD wrote. 'Paramedics attempted to revive the suspect, but he subsequently died at the scene.' Police said nobody else was injured during the incident. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. was called in, as it is in any event where a person dies during an interaction with police. It will determine whether the officer or officers involved may have committed an offence. The IIO asked anyone who witnessed the shooting to call 1-855-446-8477 or use the contact form on its website.
