S'wak Deputy Minister backs Fazzrudin for FAS presidency
KUCHING (May 29): Chief Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman is the right person to lead the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS), said State Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu.
He expressed his hope that the Kuching City Football Club chairman will secure the presidency at the upcoming FAS Annual General Meeting scheduled for June 14.
'I hope Fazzrudin will be able to lead FAS because we can see that football is a sport that can really lift our spirits wherever we are, be it in the villages or towns and anywhere else.
'I think he is the right choice to be the next FAS president. He had served as assistant chef de mission for football in Sukma just like what I did in Sukma Terengganu.
'Furthermore, he has the experience as Kuching City Football Club chairman and is familiar with FAS key strengths for the role,' Rentap told reporters after the press conference on the ASF Asian Individual Championships and ASF Asian Doubles Championships at a hotel here today.
He added that Fazzrudin, who is also the Tupong assemblyman, is actively involved with youth development and athletics, serving as patron of the Axis Club.
Rentap, who is Layar assemblyman, further emphasised the importance of nurturing football talent at the grassroots level.
'The Petronas Youth Football Closed Tournament is a collaborative programme that has helped develop young talents in the Under-10, Under-12 and Under-16 age categories and is a step in the right direction.
'We are hoping that it can develop into a football league for Sarawak but we are focusing on developing the young players.

UTAR Public Relations students blend skills with social impact
A CORPORATE social responsibility (CSR) campaign called 'We Want No Plastic Project' led by 63 final-year Public Relations students from UTAR successfully raised and donated RM3,858 to UTAR Hospital. The symbolic mock cheque presentation took place during the first session of the 40th UTAR Convocation Ceremony on April 11, highlighting the graduates' commitment to sustainability and social impact as they graduate and step into their professional careers. The project aimed to raise awareness on microplastic pollution, advocate the reduction of single-use plastics and promote healthier and eco-friendly lifestyles. The donation to UTAR Hospital not only supported the institution's sustainability efforts but also reflected the theme 'From Grads to Future Greats', symbolising both the students' academic milestones and their commitment to social responsibility as members of the younger generation. The success of this project is a testament to the hands-on, industry-relevant learning embedded within UTAR's Bachelor of Communication (Honours) Public Relations programme under the university's Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS). Designed to equip students with essential communication, planning and media management skills, the programme nurtures socially conscious professionals, who can lead purposeful campaigns and connect meaningfully with diverse audiences. UTAR president Prof Datuk Dr Ewe Hong Tat recognised the students' remarkable achievements in securing the university's first gold award at the Malaysian Public Relations Awards 2024. He expressed his gratitude for their meaningful contribution while receiving the mock cheque, and extended his best wishes to all graduates for a bright and successful future. Project advisor cum FAS academic Dr Diong Fong Wei, who also graduated with a PhD during UTAR's 40th Convocation, shared her gratitude and words of encouragement, 'My heartfelt thanks go to all our sponsors and collaborators for their generous support and, most importantly, to the students for their dedication and perseverance. 'I have always believed that this isn't just a class project, but a meaningful life experience. The amount may seem small to many, but I believe it is the sincerity that truly matters. UTAR has always supported not only academic excellence but also the holistic development of its students.' Project director, Year Three public relations student Chen Zhi Shan expressed, 'We are truly grateful to our advisor for providing us with the guidance and freedom to develop creatively. From June to September 2024, our team successfully carried out 10 diverse events. 'While executing this project, we were aware of the potential health risks posed by microplastics. This motivated us to drive the project forward. We hope that our efforts will not only impact the campus community but also raise broader awareness among the public.' She further added that the project has provided her team with valuable insights and practical exposure that will stay with them long after graduation. 'The funds we raised came from our fundraising efforts and generous community sponsorships.' She quoted a Chinese saying that says 'what we take from society should be given back for the benefit of society'. After much discussion, the team agreed to donate the amount to UTAR Hospital in gratitude to their university and as a way to give back to the wider community that has continuously supported their journey. 'Although the project concluded last year, we hope its message and impact will continue to inspire sustainable and health-conscious behaviours, while fostering more acts of kindness and civic responsibility across all levels of society.' These experiences reflect the real-world focus of the Public Relations (PR) programme offered under UTAR's FAS. The programme encourages experiential learning through client-based campaigns, PR consultancy simulations, strategic social media campaign and CSR initiatives, to empower students with vital skills in writing, strategic storytelling, multimedia content creation, crisis communication and digital engagement. It prepares them to thrive in diverse career pathways within PR, corporate communication, brand storytelling, social media management and content creation, positioning them at the forefront of a rapidly transforming industry. Another UTAR's 40th Convocation graduate and a project member Lui Kai Jian stated, 'This was a valuable opportunity for us to put into practice what we have learned over the past three years. We discovered the gap between theory and real-life application, which helped to strengthen our communication, planning, and problem-solving skills. I believe it marks the beginning of our professional journey and will motivate us to keep improving and pushing boundaries in our future careers.' Affan to lead Sabah medal hunt

Pentamaster 2Q showing declines
Pentamaster's second-quarter net profit fell 41.6% to RM11.6mil. PETALING JAYA: Pentamaster Corp Bhd remains cautious on its outlook going forward, amid the challenging global environment that has been marked by prolonged macroeconomic uncertainties and trade tensions. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the automation manufacturing and technology solutions provider noted that in the first half of the year, operating conditions remained difficult as the group faced margin pressure stemming from elevated input costs and intensified pricing competition. 'These challenges were compounded by extended customer decision-making cycles given the trade tension uncertainties, global supply chain disruptions and the spill-over effects of geopolitical tensions, all of which contributed to delayed project rollouts and impacted operational efficiency.' For its second quarter ended June 30, 2025, Pentamaster's net profit fell 41.6% to RM11.6mil, or 1.63 sen per share, bringing its first-half earnings to RM24.7mil, or 3.47 sen per share. Revenue declined 15.4% to RM144.9mil in the quarter. Pentamaster said revenue was mainly contributed by the automated test equipment segment and factory automation solutions, constituting approximately 57.1% and 42.2%, respectively, of the group's total revenue during the quarter. For the six-month period ended June 30, 2025, net profit dipped to RM24.68mil from RM39.28mil a year earlier, while revenue slipped to RM276.48mil from RM342.16mil previously. Going forward, the group anticipates a comparatively more favourable performance in the second half of the year supported by improvements in order book visibility. This is particularly from the automated test equipment segment, where customers have gradually resumed capital investments in the next-generation test handling and burn-in systems, said the company. In parallel, Pentamaster said its factory automation solutions (FAS) team remains proactive in expanding its customer base and broadening its industry footprint beyond its traditional strongholds. 'The FAS team continues to intensify efforts to penetrate emerging sectors such as renewable energy, data centres and healthcare automation where rising demand for intelligent, high-precision and flexible automation solutions is being driven by the increased emphasis on precision and output consistency, as well as the growing need for traceability and compliance in regulated industries. 'Additionally, as the trade tariffs imposed by the United States become clearer, manufacturing base positioning with automation is expected to provide positive momentum to the FAS segment.' Following the successful privatisation of Hong Kong-listed Pentamaster International Ltd with Puga Holdings Ltd, a holding company backed by a renowned semiconductor private equity firm, prominent Taiwanese semiconductor companies and global sovereign wealth funds, the group said it has begun to unlock strategic advantages from this partnership. Puga's extensive network and investment portfolios within the global technology ecosystem, particularly in Taiwan and the United States, has provided the group with greater access to new customers, collaborative research and development opportunities and strategic market entry opportunities. Additionally, Pentamaster said it is actively building its capabilities in advanced packaging technologies, supported by the accelerating growth in artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and other data-intensive, high-speed applications. 'These developments collectively provide a favourable backdrop for the group's long-term growth trajectory, positioning it well to capitalise on next-generation technology trends in the mid to long term.'
