Located on previously undeveloped land, the centre was developed by Sustainable Management Sdn Bhd and features a modular canopy structure – the first of its kind in Kuching. 'This initiative reflects the creativity and commitment of the private sector in supporting local economic development,' Fazzrudin said during the soft launch of MCCC today, in conjunction with the Modern Living Home Expo, which runs through Sunday. He noted that MCCC provides an alternative to the existing Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), offering a more flexible, high-capacity, and cost-effective venue for organisers and exhibitors. With a maximum capacity of up to 10,000 people, the centre is now one of the largest event spaces in Sarawak. Fazzrudin added that the modular design enables reduced construction costs and more competitive rental rates compared to permanent structures. 'Our economy is driven by the private sector, and when complemented by support from the government, we can achieve meaningful synergy,' he said. He further stressed the strategic collaboration between the public and private sectors in spurring economic growth. 'Economic growth not only creates jobs but also increases disposable income within the community,' he said. The chief political secretary to Sarawak Premier also pointed out that MCCC would generate economic spillover effects across various sectors, particularly benefitting the food and beverage industry, retail businesses, and vendors at the Metro City Night Market. 'When a major event takes place here, visitors won't just attend the expo – they'll explore nearby food stalls, furniture shops, and other local outlets,' he said. 'This will directly benefit small traders and the surrounding community,' he added. The developer, according to him, has future plans to convert MCCC into a permanent concrete structure based on its performance and public reception. He expressed optimism that the centre will serve as a catalyst for long-term physical development in Matang and nearby areas. fazzrudin abdul rahman lead matang MCCC Metro City Convention Centre

S'wak Deputy Minister backs Fazzrudin for FAS presidency

Rentap expressee his hope that Fazzrudin will secure the presidency at the upcoming FAS Annual General Meeting scheduled for June 14. KUCHING (May 29): Chief Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman is the right person to lead the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS), said State Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu. He expressed his hope that the Kuching City Football Club chairman will secure the presidency at the upcoming FAS Annual General Meeting scheduled for June 14. 'I hope Fazzrudin will be able to lead FAS because we can see that football is a sport that can really lift our spirits wherever we are, be it in the villages or towns and anywhere else. 'I think he is the right choice to be the next FAS president. He had served as assistant chef de mission for football in Sukma just like what I did in Sukma Terengganu. 'Furthermore, he has the experience as Kuching City Football Club chairman and is familiar with FAS key strengths for the role,' Rentap told reporters after the press conference on the ASF Asian Individual Championships and ASF Asian Doubles Championships at a hotel here today. He added that Fazzrudin, who is also the Tupong assemblyman, is actively involved with youth development and athletics, serving as patron of the Axis Club. Rentap, who is Layar assemblyman, further emphasised the importance of nurturing football talent at the grassroots level. 'The Petronas Youth Football Closed Tournament is a collaborative programme that has helped develop young talents in the Under-10, Under-12 and Under-16 age categories and is a step in the right direction. 'We are hoping that it can develop into a football league for Sarawak but we are focusing on developing the young players. 'If we don't have young players how are we going to find senior players later?' he said. FAS fazzrudin abdul rahman Gerald Rentap Jabu presidency

DUN Speaker orders parts of Pending rep's speech expunged from Hansard for breaching Standing Orders

Fazzrudin said Yong's remarks appeared to impute improper motives and make unsubstantiated allegations, contrary to the decorum expected in the august House. KUCHING (May 22): State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar today ordered several parts of Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong's speech to be expunged from the official Hansard. The ruling was made in response to Yong's speech during the motion of appreciation for the Governor's address on Wednesday, which contained two 'pantun' references found to contravene Standing Orders 32(4), 32(5), and 32(6) concerning the use of names, improper imputations, and offensive language. 'Under Standing Order 32(6), no member shall impute improper motives to any other member or make any statement of allegation which the said member is not prepared to substantiate. 'Standing Order 32(4) prohibits the use of offensive or insulting language against fellow members, while Standing Order 32(5) bars members from referring to one another by name during debates. 'You are using his name, which violates Standing Order 32(5), while 32(6) covers improper motive and 32(4) is for insulting language,' said Mohamad Asfia. The ruling came after Tupong assemblyman Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman raised the matter during the sitting today, citing a breach of Standing Order 32(6). Fazzrudin said Yong's remarks appeared to impute improper motives and make unsubstantiated allegations, contrary to the decorum expected in the august House. 'I would like to reiterate my objection under Standing Order 32, specifically concerning certain remarks made by YB Pending, which, in my view, fall squarely within the scope of Standing Order 32(6),' he said. Fazzrudin said Yong's references, while indirect, were suggestive and easily understood by the public as alluding to specific individuals. 'Although YB Pending may argue that these terms were not directly aimed at any individual, it is evident, particularly from the perspective of the layperson, that such language is suggestive and alludes to a specific person,' he said. Mohamad Asfia then ordered the DUN Secretary to expunge the relevant portions of Yong's speech from pages 62, 63, and 64 of the Hansard. Yong, meanwhile, withdrew her two 'pantun' during the sitting.

Fazzrudin: Wakaf provision in Land Code Amendment purely administrative, applies to all faiths

Fazzrudin speaking during today's State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting. – Ukas photo KUCHING (May 20): Tupong assemblyman Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman has defended the Land Code (Amendment) Bill, 2025 against claims that it introduces religious doctrine into Sarawak's secular laws, stressing that the wakaf-related provisions are purely administrative and apply across all faiths. Speaking during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today, Fazzrudin, who is also the Chief Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, responded to concerns raised by Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen, who had earlier questioned the inclusion of Islamic endowment (wakaf) provisions in the Bill. Fazzrudin clarified that the amendment does not aim to introduce religious ideology into the Land Code, but to address practical issues in the administration and registration of land designated for religious and charitable purposes. 'If YB for Padungan had read the Bill carefully, it is clear that the amendment strictly pertains to land matters under the State List in the Federal Constitution. 'The wakaf clause is to facilitate land administration by the Land and Survey Department, and it applies not only to Islamic wakaf, but also to other religions with similar endowment practices,' he said. He also explained that land designated as wakaf is traditionally used for public benefit, such as houses of worship, educational institutions, welfare centres, and other community-building initiatives. However, the lack of a proper legal framework had led to administrative delays and confusion. 'We fully support and welcome the noble intentions of donors, both individuals and organisations, who wish to dedicate land for the public good. 'But until now, administrative hurdles have made it difficult for these intentions to materialise,' he said. Fazzrudin said the amendment would help streamline the registration of wakaf and endowment land, reduce legal disputes, and give authorities better clarity to plan developments surrounding such land without compromising its original purpose. 'The amendment gives legal clarity to land dedicated for building mosques, churches, temples, schools, or health clinics, ensuring that the donor's original intent is honoured and protected,' he said. He added that the amendment reflects the Sarawak government's ongoing commitment to inclusive social development, in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), particularly its strategic pillar on social inclusivity. 'Many of us in this august House have witnessed how wakaf land can become vibrant centres for community empowerment. But we must also ensure its sustainability, so future generations can continue to benefit. 'This reform ensures that land contributed in the spirit of public service is not left in legal or operational limbo, but instead given proper space and dignity within our physical development plans,' he said. Concluding his speech, Fazzrudin said the amendment reflects Sarawak's values of mutual respect, legacy, and social responsibility. 'Land is not merely a commodity as it is a legacy. With this amendment, we can ensure that wakaf and endowment lands become lasting beacons of community upliftment. Their essence lies in paying it forward,' he said. Abg Johari: PM Anwar intervenes to seek amicable resolution in Sarawak-Petronas row

Abang Johari (left) speaks during the townhall session which was moderated by Fazzrudin (right). – Photo from Ukas KUCHING (May 4): Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that he received a phone call from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to find an equitable and amicable resolution to the ongoing dispute involving Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and Sarawak. He was cited as saying by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) as saying that discussions are moving forward based on a win-win approach for both Sarawak and Petronas. 'In this oil and gas matter, we've been tactfully 'playing ball' with Petronas for a while now. By now, I am sure many of you are aware of the latest developments surrounding this issue. 'However, we are working towards resolving it. In fact, the Prime Minister personally contacted me this morning (Saturday, London time), and we reached a mutual understanding to move towards a resolution. 'This solution will be based on mutual goodwill and the belief that the nation's oil and gas wealth should be shared fairly. Sarawak has fulfilled its responsibilities,' he said. The Premier made these remarks during the Sarawak Agenda Townhall session held in conjunction with 'Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2025' – United Kingdom (UK) Edition in London on Saturday. It was reported on May 2 that Sarawak has issued a legal notice to Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, as the company is allegedly operating without a permit at its Miri Crude Oil Terminal. Business Times reported that Petronas Carigali was given 21 days in the notice dated April 30 to obtain the necessary licence, failing which it could face financial penalties under Section 21A of the Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO) 2016. It said the company – the upstream arm of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) – had breached Section 7(e) of the DGO 2016, which requires a licence for the construction, management, or maintenance of gas pipelines or related facilities. The DGO came into effect on July 1, 2018, with Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) made the regulator and exclusive gas aggregator for the state, as part of the Sarawak government's move to protect the state's autonomy over its natural resources. Later that day, Petronas confirmed Petronas Carigali had received notices on April 30, 2025, from the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication concerning gas processing and distribution. The national oil firm told Bernama that Petronas Carigali is statutorily authorised under the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974 to undertake the company's activities and comply with all applicable laws in doing so. In a related development, the Premier also highlighted the Sarawak government's focus on strengthening the state's economic foundation, particularly through the establishment of the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund, which has been allocated RM8 billion in reserves. He explained that once Sarawak's economic stability reaches a strong and sustainable level, the benefits of this growth will be channelled back to the people through a well-planned and inclusive economic development strategy. 'Our current focus is on consolidating the state's economic base. Once we have achieved solid economic stability, the returns will be distributed to the people through a structured and comprehensive approach across all sectors,' he said. Also present at the session were Sarawak Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Law, MA63 and Federal-State Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Deputy Minister of Utilities (Sarawak Energy Berhad and Petros) Dato Ibrahim Baki; Sarawak Attorney-General Dato Sri Saferi Ali, Sarawak Financial Secretary Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar and Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel. Chief Political Secretary to the Premier Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman moderated the townhall session. Approximately 230 Sarawakian students from the United Kingdom, Germany, and France participated in the 'Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2025 UK Edition' programme. abang johari dispute lead Petronas
