KUCHING (June 6): The newly established Metro City Convention Centre (MCCC) in Matang is set to become a key driver of local economic growth and a landmark event venue in the area, said Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
Located on previously undeveloped land, the centre was developed by Sustainable Management Sdn Bhd and features a modular canopy structure – the first of its kind in Kuching.
'This initiative reflects the creativity and commitment of the private sector in supporting local economic development,' Fazzrudin said during the soft launch of MCCC today, in conjunction with the Modern Living Home Expo, which runs through Sunday.
He noted that MCCC provides an alternative to the existing Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), offering a more flexible, high-capacity, and cost-effective venue for organisers and exhibitors.
With a maximum capacity of up to 10,000 people, the centre is now one of the largest event spaces in Sarawak.
Fazzrudin added that the modular design enables reduced construction costs and more competitive rental rates compared to permanent structures.
'Our economy is driven by the private sector, and when complemented by support from the government, we can achieve meaningful synergy,' he said.
He further stressed the strategic collaboration between the public and private sectors in spurring economic growth.
'Economic growth not only creates jobs but also increases disposable income within the community,' he said.
The chief political secretary to Sarawak Premier also pointed out that MCCC would generate economic spillover effects across various sectors, particularly benefitting the food and beverage industry, retail businesses, and vendors at the Metro City Night Market.
'When a major event takes place here, visitors won't just attend the expo – they'll explore nearby food stalls, furniture shops, and other local outlets,' he said.
'This will directly benefit small traders and the surrounding community,' he added.
The developer, according to him, has future plans to convert MCCC into a permanent concrete structure based on its performance and public reception.
He expressed optimism that the centre will serve as a catalyst for long-term physical development in Matang and nearby areas. fazzrudin abdul rahman lead matang MCCC Metro City Convention Centre

S'wak Deputy Minister backs Fazzrudin for FAS presidency
Rentap expressee his hope that Fazzrudin will secure the presidency at the upcoming FAS Annual General Meeting scheduled for June 14. KUCHING (May 29): Chief Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman is the right person to lead the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS), said State Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu. He expressed his hope that the Kuching City Football Club chairman will secure the presidency at the upcoming FAS Annual General Meeting scheduled for June 14. 'I hope Fazzrudin will be able to lead FAS because we can see that football is a sport that can really lift our spirits wherever we are, be it in the villages or towns and anywhere else. 'I think he is the right choice to be the next FAS president. He had served as assistant chef de mission for football in Sukma just like what I did in Sukma Terengganu. 'Furthermore, he has the experience as Kuching City Football Club chairman and is familiar with FAS key strengths for the role,' Rentap told reporters after the press conference on the ASF Asian Individual Championships and ASF Asian Doubles Championships at a hotel here today. He added that Fazzrudin, who is also the Tupong assemblyman, is actively involved with youth development and athletics, serving as patron of the Axis Club. Rentap, who is Layar assemblyman, further emphasised the importance of nurturing football talent at the grassroots level. 'The Petronas Youth Football Closed Tournament is a collaborative programme that has helped develop young talents in the Under-10, Under-12 and Under-16 age categories and is a step in the right direction. 'We are hoping that it can develop into a football league for Sarawak but we are focusing on developing the young players. 'If we don't have young players how are we going to find senior players later?' he said. FAS fazzrudin abdul rahman Gerald Rentap Jabu presidency
