Comelec to retain 15% ballot threshold for Bangsamoro polls
Poll chief George Erwin Garcia on Monday said the threshold will remain effective as he reiterated the first-ever parliamentary polls is a continuation of the 2025 national and elections (NLE).
'Hindi tamang baguhin ang threshold sapagkat yun ang nasimulan namin sa 2025 NLE,' Garcia said.
(It is not right to change the threshold because we already implemented that.)
'Sabi sa batas ang BARMM elections ay continuation ng national and local elections so hinid kami dapat magbago ng mga ibang sinagawa namin sa 2025 NLE,' he added.
(The law states the BARMM polls is a continuation of the national and local elections so we wont change other policies.)
In October 2024, the poll body en banc approved a proposal to lower the valid ballot shading threshold to 15% for the 2025 May polls — the lowest threshold since the 20% set for the 2010 elections.
Garcia said the preparations of the Comelec for the Bangsamoro elections are in 'full blast'. He said the Comelec en banc has already approved the ballot faces for the Bangsamoro polls.
At least 7,000 automated counting machines (ACMs) will be used for the elections and instead of telecommunication units, Starlink devices will be distributed to polling precincts for vote transmission.
Comelec control
Meanwhile, Commissioner Aimee Ferolino said the poll body is eyeing to lift control over Buluan, Maguindanao del Sur and Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte for the 2025 Bangsamoro elections.
'We're considering the lifting of the two municipalities under the Comelec control kasi di masyadong mainit ang elections doon at kokonti lang naman ang positions at stake,' said Ferolino.
'There is a great possibility that the declaration of the areas under Comelec control will be lifted for the upcoming polls,' she said.
Ferolino, chairperson of the Comelec Gun Ban and Security Concerns Committee, said the poll body is continuing its security preparations for the polls. This includes requesting more personnel from the Afrmed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
'If we have secured the previous elections well, there is no reason we can't secure more the BARMM elections kasi mas nakatutok tayo. Mas maraming pwersa ang AFP at PNP at kasama natin ang PCG sa elections sa BARMM,' she added.
Ferolino reminded the public of the start of the election period and the implementation of gun ban from August 14, 2025, to October 28, 2025. — BM, GMA Integrated News

Marcos: PH now more peaceful with guerilla fronts eliminated
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said on Monday that the Philippines is now more peaceful with the elimination of guerrilla fronts. Marcos said this during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), noting that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), and former rebels are working together to maintain peace and order in the country. 'Sa wakas, wala na ring nalalabing grupong gerilya sa bansa, at titiyakin ng pamahalaan na wala nang mabubuo muli,' the President said. (Finally, there are no guerrilla groups left in the country, and the government will ensure that none will be formed again.) 'Magkakasangga ngayon ang AFP, PNP, at mga dating rebelde sa pagpapanatili ng kaayusan at kapayapaan sa BARMM. Kaya naman, ang lipunan natin ngayon ay mas mapayapa at mas mapangalaga rin sa karapatang-pantao, anuman ang edad, kasarian, kundisyon, o pangkat,' he added. (The AFP, PNP, and former rebels now work together in maintaining peace and order in BARMM. Therefore, our society is more peaceful now, giving more importance to human rights, regardless of age, gender, condition, or group.) Marcos said that the government is helping thousands of former rebels and their families to start a new life. Their communities are also being developed, and they are being provided livelihood through the help of the private sector, he added. Aside from employment programs, the President said that over 13 million Filipinos saved from armed conflict are also currently benefiting from the health stations, classrooms, water systems, and streetlights built by the government. —VBL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos cites PNP chief Torre among sports ‘champions' after charity bout
The Philippines has a new boxing champion, at least according to President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. While citing the achievements of the country's sports heroes such as Manny Pacquiao, Hidilyn Diaz, and EJ Obiena, Marcos, while laughing, added the name of Philippine National Police chief General Nicolas Torre III in the said list. "[Ang] ating mga kabataan ay maagang namumulat sa sport. Humuhusay at tumataas ang kumpiyansa. Sumusunod sila sa yapak ng ating mga kampeon at world-class na mga atleta tulad nina Senator Manny Pacquiao, Hidilyn Diaz, Caloy Yulo, Aira Villegas, Nesthy Petecio, EJ Obiena, at Alex Eala; ang paralympians natin na sina Jerrold Mangliwan, Cendy Asusano, Angel Mae Otom, at Ernie Gawilan," Marcos said in his State of the Nation Address on Monday. "Isama na rin natin 'yung bago nating kampeon na si PNP Chief Nic Torre," added Marcos, to the laughter of many inside the House of Representatives session hall. Even Marcos took a moment time to laugh after. "Nagulat si Chief PNP," he added, after the chief of police, also laughing, stood up to acknowledge the shout-out. Marcos then went on to recognize the Philippine Curling Team as well for winning the Asian Winter Games gold medal. On Sunday, Torre was declared winner by default after Davao City acting mayor Sebastian Duterte did not show up to a charity boxing event at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, after he said that he could beat up Torre. According to Torre, the said event raised more than P300,000 in ticket sales alone. — BM, GMA Integrated News

No threats monitored ahead of Marcos' 4th SONA —PNP chief Torre
The Philippine National Police said no threats have been monitored so far in connection with the conduct of the fourth State of the Nation Address of President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. on Monday. 'Sa ngayon naman wala. Okay lang. We are hoping for the best but we are prepared for the worst,' PNP chief Police General Nicolas Torre III said in a press briefing. However, Torre said the PNP is still on full alert status as around 23,000 personnel have been deployed to secure this year's SONA including 16,000 from the police organization and 6,000 from other agencies. A civil disturbance management team will also help in the security. Only three groups of rallyists have secured permits to hold programs in the areas of St. Peter Chapel and Sandiganbayan along Commonwealth Avenue as well as in White Plains, all in Quezon City. Maximum tolerance will be observed for the protesters, according to Torre. —AOL, GMA Integrated News
