From Labubus to Disney's Stitch: How UAE cafes create pop culture-inspired merch
From Labubu matcha to Stitch schoolbags, businesses across the UAE are capitalising on popular culture to boost their sales, with today's market often rewarding the fastest to ride trends. MEET Café, a coffee shop situated in Muwaileh, Sharjah, started selling Labubu-style matcha drinks around two weeks ago, and already saw a spike in sales of around 20 to 30 per cent, the founder of the café told Khaleej Times. The Labubu is a trendy plush toy that took the UAE by storm, with some customers lining up for hours to get their hands on them. Ahmed Al Harmoodi, founder of MEET Café, said that the drink became an instant hit, and the coffee shop started seeing more customers by the day. 'The Labubu drink helped attract a large number of new customers, in addition to increasing visits from existing customers who wanted to try the new product,' he said. The café even introduced a loyalty card that, once fully stamped, can get you a free Labubu toy. 'We believe that trend-based promotions can create temporary buzz, but they also present an opportunity to build long-term customer loyalty by offering a high-quality product and a distinctive experience,' Al Harmoodi said. Unexpected bestseller Maryam Hamad, an artist who sells merchandise with her own hand-drawn designs, didn't expect the Disney character Stitch from Lilo & Stitch to be her bestselling item. It all started with a request from one of her customers to create a Stitch-inspired hoodie, and after posting an image of the final product to her Instagram account, orders for other Stitch-inspired merchandise started to pour in. She said even the schoolbags that she usually sells, which have a drawing of a generic boy and girl character, didn't get many orders before her daughter asked for the Disney character to be drawn alongside the original design. Maryam then uploaded a picture of the final product and said that more and more orders started to pour through for the Stitch schoolbags. However, the work and effort put in takes up much of her time, so she sometimes has to opt out of some trends. 'It sometimes takes an entire day to paint, especially Stitch, because the drawing needs to be perfected,' she said. Maryam added that this is why she decided not to upload any 'Labubu' doll products as she knew the demand would be high. 'I already got requests from people to draw the Labubu on different items, especially on wallets for Eid. But because of the pressure, I didn't want to add pictures of it on my Instagram,' she said. Internet sensations Even influencer breakups are not spared from some businesses' marketing efforts. The Lebanese restaurant Allo Beirut uploaded a TikTok post joining in on the 'Thewizardliz' bandwagon. Lize Dzjabrailova, also known as Thewizardliz, recently was in the internet's spotlight after she accused her husband Landon Nickerson of extramarital affairs. Allo Beirut uploaded a TikTok post with the caption 'Landon is NOT allowed to come to Allo Beirut', teasingly referring to the breakup and siding with Lize. This became their most-liked video as of yet on the platform, but whether it gained them more profit is unknown. What is clear, though, is that businesses stand to gain more than just profit when they capitalise on pop culture and trends. 'Trend-based promotions can also create an opportunity [for businesses] to build long-term customer loyalty,' Al Harmoodi said.

Canal+ and Netflix expand strategic partnership to sub-Saharan Africa
Canal already offers a line-up of over 400 live channels in the region, including 28 produced for African audiences. Canal+ and Netflix have deepened their longstanding partnership, originally established in 2019 for France and Poland, by extending their strategic distribution agreement to sub-Saharan Africa. Through this collaboration, Canal+ will become the first operator to offer Netflix as part of its content bundle across 24 sub-Saharan African countries, enhancing access to premium entertainment for African viewers. Beginning in July, Canal+ subscribers in French-speaking African nations will be able to access Netflix directly through their existing packages, providing a seamless and integrated viewing experience. This move further expands the value proposition of Canal+, which already delivers over 400 live channels—including 28 channels specifically curated for African audiences—alongside advanced digital features via the Canal+ app and smart set-top boxes. The partnership brings Netflix's globally acclaimed originals such as Stranger Things, La Casa de Papel, Lupin, Emily in Paris and Squid Game to the platform, while also spotlighting popular African titles like Blood & Water, Young Famous & African, Unseen, King of Boys, Anikulapo, Blood Sisters and Kings of Joburg. For Netflix, this marks a significant milestone as its first distribution agreement in the region, enabling broader reach through Canal+'s strong presence across the African continent. For Canal+, it reinforces its status as a global content aggregator by bringing the world's leading streaming service to millions of its African subscribers. Commenting on the partnership, Pascale Chabert, Chief Content Acquisition Officer of Canal+, said: 'A few years after our distribution agreement in France and Poland, I am delighted to extend our historic partnership with Netflix to Africa. Our millions of African subscribers will benefit from a unique offer, bringing together the best of Canal+ and Netflix content in a joint package. This new agreement demonstrates Canal+'s ability to extend its unique super-aggregation model beyond the European continent.' Emma Lloyd, Vice President Partnerships EMEA at Netflix, added: 'We're thrilled about this extension of our partnership with Canal+ which will allow us to reach even more people across French speaking African countries. It's a big win for entertainment fans and part of our ongoing mission to make the member experience even better.'

‘Stranger Things' play wins Tony Awards, setting stage for TV series finale
With bloody body contortions, booming blasts and brooding high school angst, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, based on the 12-time Emmy-winning Netflix science fiction series Stranger Things, took home Tony Awards for best scenic design, lighting design and sound design of a play along with a special award for its illusions and technical effects. Miriam Buether, the scenic designer for Stranger Things: The First Shadow reflected on the journey of creating frightening moments on stage. "We love scaring people," she said backstage at the ceremony hosted by Wicked film star Cynthia Erivo. The play, directed by Stephen Daldry, was nominated for five Tony Awards in total, including best performance by an actor in a leading role in a play for Louis McCartney for his performance as Henry Creel, the younger version of the main antagonist of the Stranger Things series who is later called Vecna. Stranger Things: First Shadow is one of the expansions of the 'Stranger Things' universe created by brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, who announced the launch of Upside Down Pictures in 2022, marking an overall deal with Netflix that will also include a live-action Stranger Things spin-off series. The series has spawned video games, cosplay, in-person immersive experiences and merchandise licensing deals, including the January 2025 deal with the company behind the popular Squishmallow plush toys. Last month, at Netflix's globally livestreamed fan event called Tudum Live, it was announced that the Stranger Things TV series would have a fifth and final season split into three parts, with part one on November 26, 2025, part two on December 25, 2025 and the series finale on December 31, 2025. The final season of Stranger Things was delayed by dual Hollywood strikes in 2023. Stranger Things, the story of a group of adolescent friends in rural Indiana in the 1980s who battle creatures from an alternate dimension called the Upside Down, premiered on Netflix in 2016 and became a smash hit created by the Duffer brothers for the streaming platform. The play, produced by the Duffer brothers, takes audiences back in time to 1959, two decades before the period explored in the TV show. Jim Hopper and Joyce Maldonado — adult characters in the TV show — are seen as high school classmates with normal teen concerns about cars and classes until a new student named Henry arrives. Henry Creel is an odd and troubled boy that holds the future of the small town of Hawkins, Indiana in his hands. The New York cast includes Harlem actor Burke Swanson as Jim Hopper, Shameless actor Alison Jaye as Joyce Maldonado and McCartney as Henry Creel, who reprised his role after being in the London production. The monster-filled play debuted in London in 2023 at the Phoenix Theatre and made its New York Broadway debut in March 2025 at the Marquis Theatre.
