Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani's former interpreter, reports to federal prison for $17 million in theft

Yahoo5 hours ago

On the same day that Shohei Ohtani will pitch in a major league game for the first time since 2023, his former interpreter reported to federal prison in Pennsylvania, ESPN reported.
Ippei Mizuhara is serving a 57-month prison sentence for stealing nearly $17 million to pay off gambling debts while employed by Ohtani. Mizuhara, 40, was charged with bank fraud and tax fraud for which he faced up to 33 years in prison. Prosecutors recommended the 57-month sentence while the defense requested 18 months.

The $17 million is the sum Mizuhara was ordered to pay Ohtani in restitution for the $40.3 million in net losses run up from 19,000 wagers made with bookmaker Mathew Bowyer during a period between December 2021 and January 2024.
Bowyer is currently awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in August to running an illegal gambling business, money laundering and subscribing a false tax return.
Mizuhara was initially ordered to report to prison in March, but was granted a delay by a federal judge. The reason for delay was not given and is under court seal, ESPN's Tisha Thompson reported.
The former interpreter is expected to be deported to Japan following his prison term, according to his attorney, Michael Freedman, and prosecutors. Mizuhara grew up in the United States and is a legal permanent resident, but is a citizen of Japan. He came with Ohtani to the U.S. in 2018 when the two-way superstar began his MLB career with the Los Angeles Angels.
Mizuhara's theft was discovered with at least $4.5 million in wire transfers sent from Ohtani's bank account to an associate of Bowyer's while Bowyer was being investigated by federal authorities. Upon learning of the theft, the Los Angeles Dodgers fired Mizuhara as the 2024 MLB season began. He was formally charged one month later.

Thunder vs. Pacers: Jalen Williams explodes to fend off Indiana rally as OKC takes 3-2 NBA Finals lead

This time, Indiana's rally fell short. The Indiana Pacers cut an 18-point first-half deficit to two points in the fourth quarter Monday night. But the Oklahoma City Thunder did not relent and held on for a 120-109 win in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Advertisement With the win, the Thunder take a 3-2 series lead and stand one win away from securing the franchise's first NBA championship since it moved to Oklahoma City. They have Jalen Williams to thank for where they stand. The third-year forward exploded for a playoff career-high 40 points to lead Oklahoma City to another gritty Finals win. It was the third straight game in which Williams has scored 26 points. His buckets were big Monday night and repeatedly thwarted Pacers efforts to take control of the game. None were bigger than a 3-pointer with 8:06 remaining in the the fourth quarter. A Pascal Siakam 3 on the other end had just cut Oklahoma City's lead to 95-93 and resurrected memories of the Thunder's Game 1 collapse that allowed the Pacers to take a stunning 1-0 series lead. Siakam attacked the bucket in response, but missed a tough layup in traffic. But Cason Wallace secured the offensive rebound, and the ball made its way back to Williams on the right wing. This time he didn't miss. Advertisement Williams drilled a 3 to extend Oklahoma City's lead back to five points, and a Cason Wallace steal and layup pushed it to 100-97, forcing an Indiana timeout. From there, the Pacers never threatened again on a night where star guard Tyrese Haliburton was a non-factor while playing on an injured right calf. Tyrese Haliburton doesn't hit a field goal Tyrese Haliburton struggled through a first quarter in which he missed the only two shots that he attempted. He left briefly for the locker room after a scoreless first quarter and returned with a wrap around his right calf. ESPN's Shams Charania reported at halftime that Haliburton was dealing with calf tightness. Advertisement Haliburton continued to play and appeared to move well despite the injury after returning. But he was not on his game. He finished first half scoreless after missing all five of his field goals. He didn't score his first points until a pair of free throws with 7:07 remaining in the third quarter. He missed all six of his field goals for the game. Colorado suspends access to state election site to remove some information after Minnesota shootings

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold closed off access to the state's online election database, known as "TRACER," over the weekend, amid concerns about publicly available private information about politicians in the aftermath of the politically-motivated shootings and killings in Minnesota. "Addresses and other personal information is on TRACER," Griswold said. "The reason it's on there is for public transparency. There is the ability for elected officials and candidates to request that their addresses are redacted, and so we wanted to give folks enough time to do that, and temporarily took TRACER down." The site is where political candidates post their information to comply with election finance requirements, among other information. The site Monday carried the message, "Down for maintenance," which Griswold pointed out, does happen from time to time. After a few seconds on the error message, the website redirects you to another elections landing page on the Colorado Secretary of State's Office's website. TRACER, Colorado's online elections database, was taken down by the Colorado Secretary of State's Office as election officials and elected officials review private information on the site after the politically-motivated killing of a state representative and her husband and the shooting of a state senator and his wife in Minnesota. CBS She said she had talked with legislative leadership and other statewide elected leaders about the existence of the information on the public database. "Out of abundance of caution, we wanted to make sure that officials had the ability to think about whether they wanted their addresses redacted," Griswold said. There are many places where people's private information can be potentially obtained online, but Griswold said the killing of a state representative and her husband and the shooting of a state senator and his wife in Minnesota made the review timely. Griswold herself has been the subject of repeated threats, particularly following the 2020 elections. Four people have been convicted of charges related to making threats directed at her. "It's coming from the real facts that elected officials are under increased threats. I myself received, just in 2024, over 1,800 death threats or physical threats. It is scary, and I think we have to take that as a fact of where this country is right now," she said. "And for me, weighing the choices of the safety of elected officials, Republicans and Democrats, and a brief outage of Tracer, that the choice was very clear." Griswold said she had asked lawmakers if they wanted information like home addresses, which is not required, to be removed. The process of redacting information was taking time, and she said the site would likely remain down, but for a period of days, not weeks.

(AP Photo/Derik Hamilton) PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Luiz Araujo and Giorgian de Arrascaeta each scored a goal and Flamengo beat Esperance Sportive de Tunis 2-0 on Monday night in the Club World Cup. After dominating possession for 17 minutes, de Arrascaeta opened the scoring after finishing off a cross from Araujo. Advertisement Araujo capped an amazing performance in the 70th minute by scoring Flamengo's second goal. This came from an assist by Jorginho, Flamengo's new signing and former Club World Cup Champion. The Lincoln Financial Stadium brimmed with energy for the entire 90 minutes thanks to the 25,797 Flamengo and Esperance's fans present. The attendance was far from the stadium's 67,594 maximum capacity. Key Moment In the 66th minute, Esperance had a chance to tie the score with a counter-attack led by Youcef Belaili, but Agustin Rossi made a crucial save to keep Flamengo in the lead. This allowed Araujo to put the game out of Esperance's reach four minutes later. Advertisement Takeaways Flamengo could earn a first-place finish in Group D if they continue playing like they did in this one. Esperance's chances of making it past the group stage diminished a lot with the loss. However, with a win against LAFC and a tie between Chelsea and Flamengo, Esperance could still hope of making it into the elimination round of the Club World Cup. ___ AP soccer:
