Sarawak to upgrade traffic parks for better road safety education
The Rejang Park Traffic Garden in Sibu, built over 30 years ago, has been allocated RM350,000 for upgrades.
Lee said, 'Upgrading these facilities is important so that students can learn and understand traffic rules through real-life experiences that simulate actual road situations.' He spoke at the opening of the Sarawak Traffic Games (STG) today.
Lee also revealed plans to expand the number of traffic parks under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), ensuring every division in Sarawak has at least one fully equipped facility.
'We are committed to expanding access to road safety education for more students and rural communities,' he added.
The STG, a revival of the Shell Traffic Games discontinued in 2015, was reintroduced last year in Miri.
The next editions will be held in Sri Aman and Bintulu later this year. Today's event in Sibu involved students from nine primary and secondary schools. - Bernama

Her mother Cornelia Simon Sapinin said the total cost of the one-week trip for Carla to be accompanied by her father Jay Muthusamy is likely to be more than RM30,000. According to her, a fundraising campaign has been set up and she urged the public and companies to chip in and help Carla to fulfil her dream. Nash, who congratulated Carla for the achievement, said the State body and he personally will do their best to assist her. Chua had earlier pledged to donate RM2,000, while Johnny said the Limbahau state representative office has agreed to assist her as she deserved all the support needed for her to represent the country. Miri imbues squash players with 'community care'

MIRI (Aug 6) The inaugural Miri Squash Championships cum Mayor's Cup Challenge concluded on a high note as JH Hardware emerged champion and took home the RM2,000 cash prize. The three-day was held at Pei Min Squash Centre here from Aug 1 to 3. The team comprising Alden Yeo, Wong Lee Hong, Russell Ong, Marcus Lee and Toby Huang defeated strong contenders from across Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam. Miri Squash Association (MSA) president Yeo Yaw Lee saw the tournament as a showcase not only of competitive sportsmanship but the community's warmth and generosity as well. 'During the tournament, a fund-raising was launched and successfully raised RM2,735. MSA initially pledged a RM1,000 donation for 22-month-old Yvonne Paw who requires an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) and later matched the donation with an additional RM1,265, bringing the total donation to RM4,000. 'Beyond competitive play, young players should also learn to care for the community. This fund-raising effort reflected the primary purposes of hosting this tournament,' he said during the prize presentation. According to tournament organisers, the strong turnout reaffirmed the support for youth sports development. 'We organise this competition annually to nurture new squash talents, which is why we have men's and women's categories for the under-nine age group. Our aim is to give more children the chance to play, learn and grow through competition,' Yeo explained. It was held concurrently with the Miri Invitational Tournament with the hope of further promoting the development of squash throughout the state. 'MSA hope to continue hosting it annually here, and if Sibu and Kuching follow suit, we'll have the opportunity to promote regular team tournaments across Sarawak,' Yeo added. Hannah Yeoh urges state leaders to boost youth and sports funding
SHAH ALAM: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has called on Chief Ministers and Menteris Besar to allocate adequate funds for youth and sports development in their upcoming state budgets. Speaking after chairing the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Supreme Committee Meeting, she emphasised the importance of financial support for state-level initiatives. Hannah highlighted that sufficient funding would enable state executive councillors to implement more development programmes. 'This is not a small portfolio; it looks after the future assets of the country and promotes a healthy lifestyle. If they receive adequate budgets, they can implement many more development programmes, but usually, it's not enough,' she said. The minister also chaired the first Meeting of Ministers and Excos on Youth and Sports Development 2025, attended by state youth and sports representatives. According to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, 54 per cent of office holders in youth organisations are under 30, following the enforcement of the Youth Societies and Youth Development Act (Amendment) 2019. The act is expected to impact 8,233 registered youth organisations, ensuring greater youth participation in leadership roles. - Bernama
