SNL writers are slammed as racist for 'two b*****s versus a gorilla' skit

Daily Mail06-05-2025

Saturday Night Live has been slammed for a tone deaf skit describing two black women as 'b***hes.'
Quinta Brunson and Ego Nwodim took part in the skit capitalizing on the viral meme '100 men vs a gorilla ', playing two women arguing with a gorilla inside an enclosure.
'Why you starin' like you got a problem? Can I have my face back?' Brunson asks.
'You think this the first time I've fought a 400 pound b***h? I used to work at Lane Bryant,' she adds, referring to the plus sized women's clothing store.
Nwodim then interjects, adding: 'You up here on all fours lookin' like LGBT and the Q, sassy.'
During the skit, the women refer to each other as b***h as an apparent term of endearment, with Nwodim telling Brunson 'that was good b***h' after she made a joke at the expense of the gorilla.
Brunson answered: 'Thank you b***h.'
Separately, she said to the gorilla, 'you supposed to be all big and strong? Stand up. It's giving one of the gworls' - which is a slang word for 'girls' to refer to women, especially those within the black trans community.
The sketch has been widely panned on social media, with a post from the SNL team inundated with criticism.
'Incredibly offensive and ignorant to address any woman as a B**CH from an entire television network,' one wrote.
Another added: 'Y'all might as well go ahead and say ''two black b**ches vs a gorilla.'
A third critic said 'this don't sit right with me at all. ''Can I have my face back?'' 'LGBT and Q'' + fat shaming? ''It's giving one of the girls''. No way they are this tone deaf... This is flat out disrespectful.'
'This had to go through multiple people after being written, and not a single one of them thought this was a bad idea?' another asked.
'They're back to mocking black women using two black women? Yuck.'
Others pointed out that the joke started as 100 men vs the gorilla, yet has somehow devolved into 'two black women' vs the gorilla.
The initial meme began on X and swept the internet last week, with people like Elon Musk and MrBeast weighing in.

The sketch has been widely panned on social media, with a post from the SNL team inundated with criticism
It posed the question about whether 100 men could take down a single gorilla, to which Musk said he'd be willing to volunteer.
'Sure. What's the worst that could happen?' he asked.
Mike Tyson said the gorilla 'would get f***ed up' if it had to go up against 100 heavyweight champions.
But critics say Brunson and Nwodim's skit was 'rooted in anti-Black racism. An African and a Caribbean cosplaying a stereotypical Black American woman is not funny.'
DailyMail.com has approached NBC for comment.
Critics say Brunson and Nwodim's skit was 'rooted in anti-Black racism. An African and a Caribbean cosplaying a stereotypical Black American woman is not funny'
Supporters argued that Brunson likely writes her own skits and must have approved of the sketch before it went to air.
Others argued that one of the most controversial lines - 'can I have my face back?' - is a common phrase to call out a person who is staring too long, and does not have the racist connotations that others have interpreted it as.
'Maybe it's a generational thing?' one person queried while defending the phrase.
Others accused critics of simply being too 'woke' or sensitive to enjoy the humor.

Duncan Bannatyne, 76, 'in recovery' following surgery as wife Nigora Whitehorn, 45, shares snap of the mogul from his hospital bed - months after he broke leg and 'almost died'

Duncan Bannatyne 's wife Nigora Whitehorn has revealed the mogul was 'recovering' in hospital following mystery surgery, months after breaking his leg and then 'almost dying' after being stung by a dragon fly. Taking to her Instagram Stories on Tuesday, the stunner shared a snap of the ex Dragon's Den star, 76, as he recuperated in bed with a nasal cannula giving him oxygen. Uzbekistan-born Nigora, 45, captioned the candid snap 'recovery' alongside a love hear emoji wrapped in bandage. She then posted a glam selfie sporting dramatic eye make-up as she sat at her beloved husband's bedside. MailOnline have contacted Duncan's representatives for comment. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Back in January Duncan was left relying on the use of a knee brace and walking stick after seriously hurt himself while strutting his stuff on the dance floor in St. Barts. He was supported by a crutch as he prepared to fly home from Gustaf III Airport in St Barts, where the brace around his right leg could be seen. 'He broke his leg in London eight weeks ago and was making a great recovery until his active holiday in the Caribbean, which involved dancing until 4am,' his spokesman told MailOnline's Richard Eden at the time. Adding: 'He used his leg brace to get back in recovery for his flight and is feeling fine now.' Last month Duncan revealed he 'almost died' after being stung by a dragonfly whilst on holiday with his wife in Mexico. The multi-millionaire shared that after contracting an infection he was left with a 'dryness' in his throat that left him struggling to speak, when a doctor gave him an injection to treat the sting. Speaking to Evan Davis on BBC Radio 4's Decisions That Made Me A Leader, Duncan recalled: 'I almost died in Mexico, just a few weeks ago. 'I got this infection in my hand. It was a bite and it's swelling. There were seven couples and a woman said: ''You have to get a doctor.' 'My wife phoned the doctor. I lay on the bed and he says he's going to give me an injection because it's a dragonfly. He injected me into my hip and I turn on my back. 'I was lying there, he was talking to my wife and I had this dryness come up through my oesophagus. I was so dry and I couldn't speak. And my heart started - bump, bump bump bump bump, bump, bump.' Duncan added that he managed to catch the medic's attention again, explaining: 'He gave me this injection and it took it away. And then they got some pills from the pharmacist.' He added he's now 'seriously' considering planning his will, in case he has another health scare in the future. Duncan continued: 'And when I'm gone, what happens? I'm sure some time in your life somebody who's very old says, listen, when I die, I want you to do this. Except now I want to do it, I want to put the plans in place.', The lion share of his estimated £400 million fortune will go to his 'soul mate' Nigora. Nigora is Duncan's third wife after previously tying the knot with Gail Brodie and Joanne McCue, in 1987 and 2006 respectively. Thrice-wed Duncan has four children with Gail and two with Joanna. Duncan proposed to Nigora in 2016 with a £40k ring in Monte Carlo after they first started dating in 2015 when Duncan met her after visiting the dental surgery on London's Harley Street where she was working in 2014.

Period drama 'just like Downton Abbey' now streaming on Amazon Prime

It is set in the boom years of the 1880s in New York City From the genius behind Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, comes an American period piece set during the dynamic boom of the 1880s in New York City, The Gilded Age. The series initially aired on HBO in January 2022 and quickly returned for a second season in October 2023. Fans can now eagerly anticipate the premiere of The Gilded Age's third series on June 22. Based in bustling United States during the Gilded Age, the narrative follows Marian Brook, who navigates the stiff upper circles of New York City's elite in 1882. ‌ Encountering regular turmoil, the series delves into the era's societal issues - industrialisation, class struggles, confrontation between new wealth and old aristocracy, the African-American elite, and the stories of the domestic staff upon whose shoulders their world rests. ‌ Last year, tragic news emerged from the set that a horse had passed away while filming. HBO addressed the matter, saying: "HBO was saddened to learn that on June 28, during filming on the set of The Gilded Age, a horse collapsed and died, likely of natural causes, according to a veterinarian's preliminary findings." They emphasised animal welfare, noting, "The safety and well-being of animals on all our productions is a top priority, and the producers of The Gilded Age work with American Humane to ensure full compliance with all safety precautions. Following AHA's recommendation, the horse was transported to a facility for a full necropsy. "AHA has interviewed all involved personnel, and full necropsy results are pending." The Gilded Age boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring renowned talents such as Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga, Harry Richardson, Blake Ritson, and Simon Jones, reports the Mirror US. The show has garnered mixed reviews from critics but maintains an impressive 86 per cent rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. One critic praised the show, saying: "The series also still feels like something of an outlier for HBO, but an enjoyable one. "If that's not enough to elicit thunderous applause, in keeping with the spirit of the season, it's certainly worthy of an opera clap." Another reviewer noted: "The Gilded Age preserves everything that made Downton Abbey so addictive in its day, with far more American star power and its own historical quirks to explore." ‌ A further review commended the show, stating: "The Gilded Age Season 2 is an impressive spectacle in storytelling, brimming with thoroughly distinctive relationships, low yet impactful stakes, and spectacular performances from the whole cast." However, not all critics were equally impressed, with one stating: "History is more interesting than this. "People are more interesting than this." Audiences have had a mixed response to the show, with one saying: "The show is an absolute treat to history-lovers period-piece enjoyers. ‌ "It's important to realise this show takes great inspiration from the dynamics and certain characters of the era, but is by no means a faithful interpretation - which is what makes this show great. "It immerses you in the world entirely, which is always better done with more liberties in writing. My new favourite show! "I'm learning so much about this eclectic period in history." Conversely, another viewer's critique was less favourable: "I found it incredibly dull. ‌ "I tried, I really tried, to give it time for the story to develop into something interesting but I was just as disengaged at the end of the season as I was at the beginning. Unfortunate because it's a great cast (which is the only reason I'm giving it 2 stars)." Some were enchanted by the show's sumptuous portrayal of the past, mentioning: "The costumes, the sets, the with opulence. I loved Downton Abbey but I enjoyed the US take on it even more." Yet, other viewers were distinctly underwhelmed, commenting: "Deadly boring with bad writing, bad acting and it sounded dubbed. If you need to watch costumes, there are lots of other choices. "Even the design elements were ghastly." The parallels drawn with Downton Abbey were unavoidable, with one viewer acclaiming: "Best period drama ever! "Outstanding acting, costumes and writing. Better than JF's Downton Abbey and has so much potential. Best show HBO has currently." The Gilded Age's third season will have its series premiere on June 22 with new episodes dropping every Sunday on HBO. The show can also be streamed on Max or rented on Amazon Prime Video.
