Phase 2 of Chandola lake anti-encroachment drive starts on Tuesday
Ahmedabad: City police and civic authorities will launch Phase 2 of the anti-encroachment drive near Chandola lake from Tuesday. After clearing 1.5 lakh sq m in Phase 1, this phase aims to free 2.5 lakh sq m of illegal structures.
"Maintaining law and order during the operation is our top priority," said city police commissioner GS Malik ahead of the second phase of the Chandola lake demolition drive. Following the clearance of 1.5 lakh sq m of encroached land in Phase 1, the authorities will now clear an additional 2.5 lakh sq m in Phase 2, said the commissioner.
To ensure the process remains peaceful, the police have deployed 3,000 personnel and 25 companies of the State Reserve Police (SRP) in two shifts.
The demolition work will start at 7am and may continue for 3 to 4 days.
Loudspeaker announcements have been made in the affected areas over the past two days, instructing residents to vacate their houses before the operation begins. Those residing in the area before 2010 have been informed they may be eligible for EWS housing and can collect forms from the Danilimda ward office.
According to police records, the Chandola area previously had a high presence of Bangladeshi nationals living without legal documents. Thisy year, police detained 250 illegal immigrants from the city, of which 207 were from the Chandola area. Over 200 have since been deported. Police officials earlier claimed that parts of the area were also used for illegal activities.
The police commissioner stated that the force is prepared to handle the operation without any disruption and that patrolling will continue until the drive is complete.

Efforts also focused on mapping and monitoring entry routes commonly exploited by undocumented immigrants entering India. Special Operation Units and Police Stations worked in close coordination, gathering actionable intelligence that led to swift detentions of individuals overstaying visas or lacking valid travel documents. The successful drives included several key arrests under specific cases. Five Bangladeshi nationals were arrested at PS Sangam Vihar under Sections 318(2)/319(2)/337/61(1)(A) of BNS and 34 Aadhar Act. Two Bangladeshi nationals were arrested at PS Fatehpur Beri under Sections 318(2)/139(2)/61(1)(A) of BNS, the 14 Foreigner Act and the 34 Aadhar Act. Eight Bangladeshi nationals were arrested at PS Lodhi Colony under Sections 318(2)/319(2)/337 of the BNS, the 14 Foreigners Act, and the 34 Aadhar Act and one Bangladeshi national at PS Maidan Garhi under Section 25/54/59 of the Arms Act. The police have appealed to the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals suspected of illegal stay in their vicinity, with a statement assuring that information provided to local police will be treated confidentially and may prevent unlawful activities. Residents' Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Market Welfare Associations (MWAs) have been urged to support law enforcement by spreading awareness and cooperating in verification drives to maintain safe and law-abiding neighbourhoods. Nashik cops arrest 3 Bangladeshis for illegal stay & document forgery
Nashik: Police arrested three Bangladesh nationals, including a couple from Pune, who were residing unlawfully in India. Additionally, the Nashik police arrested a 35-year-old loan executive from Nashik. Following information received on June 8 about a Bangladeshi woman living with a man in Nashik, police commissioner Sandeep Karnik directed DCP (crime) Prashant Bacchav to look into the matter. A team was formed, and through technical analysis, they detained both the woman and the loan executive. During questioning, the woman confessed that she was Bangladeshi and had been staying in India illegally. ACP (crime) Sandeep Mitke said the woman initially entered India unlawfully in 2017, assisted by her uncle, and settled in Ghansoli, Mumbai. She connected with the loan executive through social media, developing a relationship. After returning to Bangladesh, she found out that she was pregnant. She delivered a girl in July 2018. She then re-entered India illegally and began cohabiting with the loan executive. The woman travelled back to Bangladesh and returned to India in 2019 with valid documentation, but overstayed her visa period.
