'Aamir Khan didn't make money from Laal Singh Chaddha, says his CA; adds ‘Katrina Kaif is sharp in money matters'

Time of India22-05-2025

Aamir Khan's chartered accountant, Bimal Parekh, revealed the actor's indifference towards money, similar to Ranbir Kapoor. Khan didn't earn from 'Laal Singh Chaddha' due to its underperformance and his profit-sharing model. Parekh initiated this backend system, where Khan forgoes upfront fees to ease producers' financial burden, contrasting with Katrina Kaif's financial acumen.
Aamir Khan grabbed headlines after revealing he didn't earn a dime from his film Laal Singh Chaddha. Now, his chartered accountant Bimal Parekh has shed light on the actor's carefree attitude toward money, saying that both Aamir and his PK co-star
Ranbir Kapoor
are surprisingly indifferent when it comes to finances.
'They don't really understand money,' Parekh remarked.
No Upfront Fees, Only Profit Sharing
Speaking at the ABP Live summit, Aamir Khan revealed that he didn't earn any money from Laal Singh Chaddha since the film underperformed at the box office. This was due to his no-fees policy, a strategy initially recommended by his chartered accountant.
Pioneering the Backend Profit-Sharing Model
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bimal Parekh explained that they pioneered the full backend profit-sharing model for Aamir Khan, where the actor took no upfront fee.
This approach ensured that the studio (Viacom 18) still earned profits from Laal Singh Chaddha, even though Aamir's earnings were minimal.
Charging Less to Support Producers
He added that unlike Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir did earn from Dangal. At a time when most actors demanded upfront fees, Aamir had mentioned to him that he charged less to avoid burdening producers financially. Surprised by this, Parekh suggested an even better approach: to forgo upfront fees entirely and instead opt for profit-sharing on the backend.

Who's Sharp About Money?
In the same interview, Bimal Parekh revealed that Aamir Khan remains largely unbothered by money matters. He noted that
Katrina Kaif
is particularly sharp and attentive when it comes to financial details. In contrast, Aamir and Ranbir Kapoor tend to be less concerned about money. Parekh also mentioned that producer Ritesh Sidhwani and director Krishna DK of the Raj-DK duo are among those who are financially savvy and well-informed.
Aamir's Philosophy: No Profit, No Pay
Earlier, speaking to ABP Live, Aamir Khan explained his fee structure, revealing that he only gets paid if the film turns a profit. He didn't earn anything from Laal Singh Chaddha since it underperformed at the box office, but he has no regrets, taking full responsibility for the film's failure. Unlike some actors who charge based on the number of shooting days—regardless of a film's success—Aamir prefers not to burden producers with fees if the project doesn't succeed, prioritizing their interests over his own earnings.

800 transactions worth Rs 3 cr on first day of weekend property registration drive

Bengaluru: The govt's new weekend property registration initiative kicked off on a promising note with over 800 documents registered across the state on June 1— the first Sunday after the reform was introduced. The initiative, aimed at easing weekday congestion at sub-registrar offices, brought in more than Rs 3 crore in revenue through stamp duty and registration fees on that one day alone. Officials from the department of stamps and registration described the initial response as "decent" and "encouraging". Some said they are optimistic that participation will increase in coming weeks. "Besides easing weekday rush, the move is aimed at offering flexibility to working individuals," said a department official. He said the department is considering launching awareness campaigns to popularise the option. As per the scheme, at least one sub-registrar office in every district will remain open on the second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays of the month. Department data shows around 834 property documents were registered across the state on the opening day, including 60 linked to the farmer registration and unified beneficiary information system (FRUITS). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Egypt: New Small Electric Car For Seniors. In contrast, the five stamp and registration districts within Bengaluru Urban recorded just 20 registrations in total. There are 35 registration districts in Karnataka, including five within Bengaluru, but on June 1, only 32 districts offered property registration services. No registrations took place in Kodagu, Karwar, and Shivajinagar. P Sunil Kumar, inspector general of registration and commissioner of stamps (IGRCS), highlighted the rationale behind the move. "The sub-registrar offices working on the second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays will observe a holiday on the following Tuesday. So, the revenue collection will remain the same. Our main intention is to assist the working class rather than collecting more revenue," Kumar said. He also said the department will monitor the scheme over the next few weeks to assess its effectiveness. "The department may adopt any measures required after the review for the effective implementation of the initiative in the state," he added. Officials noted that weekend registration has made the process smoother for buyers and sellers alike, especially for those who previously struggled to visit sub-registrar offices during the week due to packed schedules.

Smaller centres leave metros behind in hiring pace: Report

NEW DELHI: Small cities and towns witnessed a sharp surge in hiring - more than double the pace seen in metros - driven by robust growth in the BFSI, manufacturing, retail, and IT sectors. This trend marks a significant shift towards decentralised economic growth, underscoring the rapid rise of tier-2 cities as emerging talent hubs, with opportunities now expanding beyond traditional urban centres. Job openings in tier-2 cities rose nearly 42%, compared to a 19% increase in tier-1 cities, according to the Randstad Talent Insights Report 2025 shared exclusively with TOI. The first edition of the report, drawn from data in the six-month period - Sept 2024 to Feb 2025-captures insights across six key industries: banking, financial services & insurance (BFSI), manufacturing and automotive, IT, pharma, healthcare & life sciences (PHL), retail, FMCG & FMCD, and energy and utilities. Anjali Raghuvanshi, chief people officer & senior director (business innovation) at Randstad India, a talent company, said, " Our report indicates that tier-1 cities maintain a robust hiring outlook across all surveyed sectors. More interestingly, tier-2 and 3 cities are rapidly gaining ground, emerging as hiring hotspots, thus reflecting the vast potential and widespread distribution of talent across the country. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Among tier-1 cities, Bengaluru solidified its leadership in talent demand, exhibiting higher hiring numbers and a greater share of demand across all experience levels and sectors. Mumbai further strengthened its dominance in the energy and utilities sector at the middle and senior levels. It also reinforces its position as a key talent hub across all levels for the BFSI, retail, FMCG, and FMCD industries. Among tier-2 cities, Chandigarh made an impactful rise to top rankings and witnessed surge in hiring across all industries at different levels. Gandhinagar and Aurangabad joined the list of tier-2 cities in this edition. During the period, Vadodara showed a big surge in hiring numbers, rankings, and share of demand at all levels in the energy & utilities, PHL, and automotive & manufacturing industries. Further, under the BFSI sector, investment banking, business operations, and business analyst roles take the top three spots in terms of hiring demand across all levels. The role of a cyber fraud analyst entered the skill portfolio for the first time to feature in the Top 20 skills. With more advanced cyber frauds in the digital age, the role has opened up job opportunities, both in tier-1 and tier-2 cities, the report adds. In the manufacturing and automotive sector, production managers, supply chain/logistics professionals, and operations management specialists continue to dominate the hiring demand. Bupa weighs foray into private hospitals market in India

British health insurance major Bupa is looking to enter the fast-growing private hospital and healthcare market in India, currently dominated by players like Max Healthcare, Apollo Hospitals, Fortis, Narayana Health, and Medanta, as the company grows its engagement beyond the traditional insurance business (Niva Bupa), global CEO Inaki Ereno told TOI in an interview. Excerpts: How do you assess the Indian health insurance market in India? The Indian health insurance market is the most attractive and best in the world. It's still under-penetrated, and we believe there will be many more people requiring private medical insurance. We need more beds, more hospitals, more clinics, and more insurance here... In terms of our own growth, it's been 35% over the last three years. We're clearly seeing a massive opportunity. In markets like Europe, UK, Australia , Latin America, you have a Bupa Payvider programme where you provide not just insurance and easy claims processing, but also a network of healthcare providers. These include dental and mental health clinics, and hospitals. Any plans to start hospitals and such other services in India? With Payvider, we are not just insurers but also providers. Of the claims that our patients go through, we always want around 25% in a place called Bupa - in a Bupa clinic, in a Bupa hospital, in a Bupa digital place. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo This helps us to learn the cost of things, and also allows us to personalise the service. It is too soon to talk about India. I cannot commit yet on the dates but, yes, you can expect that Bupa will keep investing here... we do have a plan, a commitment to study the situation and be ambitious and come up with something big. We believe that 25% of the activity that we do should be run in a place like Bupa. Inflation in health costs is a concern for customers, which also sees policy costs go up. Your views? When it comes to the cost of claims, there is inflation across the world. This is why developing a private medical insurance market helps everybody. When you have more people into private medical insurance, that helps lower costs of claims. Normally, premiums go up with inflation. So, they will not reduce. Are we expecting a big increase in premiums? The answer is no. We expect premiums to go in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Apart from metros and bigger cities, how do you see the opportunity in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns and rural India? We are clearly targeting markets beyond the top 50-60 cities. We think there's a massive opportunity to get people into the fold of insurance. India is at a very nascent stage, and awareness is still low with respect to health insurance. India is a growing country, with lots of construction and other infrastructure activities happening. Do you think that dust, pollution, and long traffic snarls in congested cities create health hazards for people? The answer is yes, though no one can make a direct correlation in elements like these. But we are working with the Norman Foster Foundation to understand what is the impact that living in a particular city has on your health, including in Delhi.
