Tennessee extends Chris Woodruff's contract
"Under Chris' outstanding leadership, our men's tennis program has firmly established itself as one of the premier programs in the nation," Tennessee vice chancellor and director of athletics Danny White said. "We are thrilled to have him at the helm, guiding us to even greater success in the years ahead here on Rocky Top!"
Woodruff served as an assistant coach at Tennessee from 2002 until being promoted as head coach in 2017.
He played for the Vols from 1991-93 and remains the only NCAA singles champion (1993) in Tennessee program history. Woodruff also earned ITA National Player of the Year and SEC Player of the Year honors.
"I'm forever grateful for the opportunity Tennessee has given, not only myself, but my terrific family as well," Woodruff said. "The last seven years in particular have been incredible, especially under the direction of Danny White and his staff. They have led this athletic department to new heights, and I'm thrilled to receive this contract extension and have the opportunity to hopefully do our part in men's tennis."

Tennessee sophomore Boo Carter's Rocky Top return '50/50' amid fall camp uncertainty
The Tennessee Volunteers are just days away from kicking off fall camp as they prepare for their season opener against Syracuse. However, an unfortunate situation has overshadowed the team's preseason buzz — and it doesn't involve players gearing up for the field. Sophomore Boo Carter has missed numerous team activities, and it's not sitting well within the program. 'Tennessee sophomore defensive back Boo Carter is expected to be one of the Volunteers' best players in 2025 on defense, offense and special teams, but his status with the team is unclear as we inch closer to August. Carter has missed 'numerous' team activities and was even confronted by team leaders because of his absences, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel,' CBS Sports' Jordan Dajani wrote. Adding to the drama, Carter has also blindsided his former agent. Apparently, the agent didn't even know he'd been replaced, as Carter and his mother have been unresponsive regarding the matter. 'I did represent Boo. However, I'm not sure I still do," Isaac Conner wrote in a text message to CBS Sports. "He has been non responsive and so has his mother. They posted something about Omar Cooper representing him and advising him now." Head coach Josh Heupel has made it clear that no individual is bigger than the Power T — not even himself — and he reportedly wouldn't hesitate to move on from Carter if necessary. If Carter is dismissed from the program, he's already been linked to a Big 12 school. For now, the outcome remains uncertain. 'We'll see how this situation plays out. For now, it feels like it's 50/50 on whether Carter plays for the Volunteers this fall,' A to Z Sports' Zach Ragan wrote. Fall camp begins July 30, and Heupel is expected to meet with the media beforehand to address lingering questions. As it stands, Carter's future with the program is completely up in the air.

ESPN names Ohio State as a college basketball team that could 'make a jump' this season
We are all getting ready for the start of the college football season now just a little over a month away, but the college basketball season won't be too far behind. In fact, we're now within 100 days of the Ohio State basketball season, and ESPN took a big look at previewing hoops for 2025-2026 by looking at many different angles and storylines. One of the things Myron Metcalf and Jeff Borzello touched on was ten teams that "could make a jump" this coming season. And, if you are an Ohio State fan, then you have to like what the ESPN duo things of the Buckeyes this season because they were named as one of those ten teams. OSU was able to retain some key pieces of its core group, but outside of that, there's been a major overhaul of the guys suiting up in the scarlet and gray this season. The mix of old and new will have to come together for the Buckeyes to get back to the NCAA Tournament, but there's good reason to believe that it could happen. Here's what Borzello says about Ohio State this winter: "The Buckeyes showed flashes of their potential last season but couldn't quite string together a consistent run of form. With a terrific trio back in Bruce Thornton, Devin Royal and John Mobley Jr. -- plus the additions of Christoph Tilly and Brandon Noel up front -- Jake Diebler's team should find itself in the NCAA tournament." It sure seems like Ohio State hasn't had a shortage of talent over the last few years, but getting the team to come together and play as a team has been an issue that seems to be a problem in today's day and age of the transfer portal and name, image and likeness. Here's to hoping ESPN is right and that the Buckeyes make it back to meaningful games late and on into the postseason this basketball season. Bolton football's Joshua Henderson, 16, dies after complications from heat stroke
Joshua Henderson, a Bolton High School football player who'd been hospitalized since collapsing during a July 7 practice, died on July 26, Memphis Shelby County Schools announced in a statement on July 27. "It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of a beloved Bolton High School (BHS) student, Joshua Henderson," said MSCS. "He was not only an exceptional athlete and dedicated scholar, but also a source of light and joy to all who knew him. His kindness, determination, and positive spirit left a lasting impression on classmates, teachers, and our entire BHS community." On a GoFundMe page being used to raise money for funeral expenses, Henderson's family wrote that he suffered a severe heat stroke and had been receiving treatment at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. "After bravely fighting for his life in the hospital, Josh transitioned due to complications from organ failure caused by a severe heat stroke," the family wrote. "Josh was only 16 years old, full of life, laughter, and promise. He was deeply loved by his parents, siblings, extended family, and all who knew him. His sudden loss has left our hearts shattered and our world forever changed." MSCS said that grief counselors and support staff will be available at the school in the coming days for any students in need.
