China's science tech sector maturing rapidly amid incentives
BEIJING: From clinching a sweeping 9-0 victory at the RoboCup German Open in March to gearing up for the RoboCup 2025 in Salvador, Brazil, in July, a Chinese humanoid robot soccer team has been capturing global attention.
At the heart of this excitement is the T1 robot, developed by Beijing-based humanoid robotics startup Booster Robotics, which is breaking new ground in performance and design.
Standing 1.2m tall and weighing 30kg, the T1 robot's kicking and goal-keeping movements have been significantly upgraded.
It is now capable of delivering powerful shots, executing free kicks and performing fluid, human-like motions.
Cheng Hao, founder and chief executive officer of Booster Robotics, said the T1 model was specifically designed for developers with an emphasis on being lightweight, agile and exceptionally durable.
'For example, the robot can withstand hundreds of falls and still function without issue.
'To exaggerate a little, it can survive a rock-breaking stunt on its chest and stand up within a second,' Cheng said.
The technical resilience and adaptability have helped the high-tech startup expand its market presence well beyond China.
The company has already delivered hundreds of humanoid robots to customers worldwide, including in the United States, Germany, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and Japan.
Behind this impressive performance lies a broader story of patient capital and strategic financial support for the country's rapidly maturing robotics industry.
Earlier this month, Booster Robotics completed its series A funding round.
Cheng said the funds would be mainly used to accelerate product iteration, improve manufacturing processes and scale up production to meet growing market demand.
'The Beijing municipal government has also provided great support in terms of equity investment and major project funding, which has helped the company achieve technical and production breakthroughs in a short time,' Cheng added. — China Daily/ANN

US trade deficit widens in May as Trump tariffs fuel uncertainty
WASHINGTON: The US trade deficit widened more than expected in May, government data showed Thursday, with both imports and exports declining as US President Donald Trump's tariffs sent shock waves through the economy and snagged supply chains. The world's biggest economy logged an overall trade gap of $71.5 billion, in the month after Trump imposed a 10 percent duty on most trading partners before pausing steeper rates for dozens of these economies. This was an expansion from the $60.3 billion deficit in April, according to Commerce Department data. The figures, however, came as both imports and exports shrank in May. US imports were down 0.1 percent to $350.5 billion, as incoming shipments of goods ticked down. Imports of consumer goods dropped by $4.0 billion, with those of apparel and toys both sliding, although imports of autos and parts climbed. US exports, meanwhile, dropped by 4.0 percent to $279.0 billion, with declines largely seen in industrial supplies and materials, the report showed. While Trump pulled back on some of his harshest tariff measures in April, he doubled down on levies impacting goods from China. Tit-for-tat tariffs between Washington and Beijing surged to triple-digits around the time, a level described as a trade embargo as businesses halted shipments to wait for both governments to ease tensions. This could have dented imports of certain consumer goods before United States and Chinese officials eventually came to a pact in mid-May to temporarily lower these tariffs. – AFP

Malaysia secures RM8.13 bill in potential investments from Anwar's Italy visit
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has secured potential investment worth RM8.13 billion in several sectors, including petrochemicals, machinery and equipment via bilateral meetings held in conjunction with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's visit to Italy. Anwar said potential investments were also secured in the electric and electronics (E&E) sector, as well as oil and gas services and equipment. Malaysia, meanwhile, generated RM425 million in potential exports for oleochemical products, biofuel feed, and livestock food additives. The bilateral meetings involved 41 Italian companies from the manufacturing, services and trade sectors and government agencies. Anwar said several key projects between Malaysia and Italy were reaffirmed during his official meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. "In my meeting with the Italian prime minister, which was the main highlight, Prime Minister Meloni and I reaffirmed several ongoing projects that are under discussion and consideration. "An interesting development is Italy's wish to elevate bilateral ties, as well as those between the European Union (EU) and Asean, as they see Asean's potential as a key driver in regional activities and economic development. "As we know, we achieved several framework agreements on economic activity. A project between Petronas and Italy-based European company ENI, known for its strength in biochemicals and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS)," he said at a press conference with Malaysian media yesterday. Anwar Ibrahim was accorded a guard of honour upon his arrival at Chigi Palace, the official residence of his Italian counterpart. Anwar was received by Meloni before the national anthems of both countries were played. Meloni then introduced her delegation, which included Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, before Anwar introduced his. During the talks, Anwar also conveyed Malaysia's firm position on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. "We expressed our gratitude for Italy's agreement and clarity in its statement urging a halt to the attacks on Gaza and allowing humanitarian aid access to the area," he said. Anwar extended an invitation to Meloni to visit Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the upcoming Asean Summit with Dialogue Partners in October. Anwar said, in his discussion with Tajani, they addressed trade, investment, and EU–Asean cooperation, while also reiterating Malaysia's position on Gaza, Iran, and Israel. "We reiterated our firm stance on ensuring justice in response to Israel's aggression in Gaza and the provocations against Iran, which led to Iran's retaliatory actions," he said. "Nonetheless, our central focus was on the pursuit of peace to ensure regional security." Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is currently undertaking a series of visits to three countries – Italy, France, and Brazil – beginning July 1. This series of visits by the Prime Minister is part of Malaysia's ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and promote economic cooperation at the global level.

ICN Launches $ICNT, latest investment signals $470 million valuation
ZUG, Switzerland, July 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Impossible Cloud Network launches token on Bybit, Binance, Kraken, and other major exchanges following $34 million ecosystem raise Impossible Cloud Network (ICN) – a decentralized cloud services provider– is today announcing the launch of its $ICNT token through Tier 1 centralized exchanges Bybit, Binance, Kraken, Bitget, and more. The token launch follows a recently announced investment (valuation: $470 million) from NGP Capital, a deep tech fund that backed Xiaomi and Helium. ICN is the first decentralized cloud provider to match and surpass centralized hyperscalers in latency, availability, and performance. Its service is live and operating a fully open, multi-service, permissionless, and composable cloud infrastructure that integrates storage, compute, and networking at scale. The token listing comes just weeks after ICN attracted a substantial valuation of $470 million from Nokia-backed investor NGP Capital, which joined 1kx, No Limit Holdings, Protocol VC, HV Capital, and more in investing a total of $34 million into ICN. The Switzerland-based cloud network has substantial traction inside its ecosystem, handling over 23,000 cloud requests per second from its 1,000+ enterprise customers. This makes ICN one of the biggest revenue-generating decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePINs) in the industry and places it in pole position to win the AI infrastructure race. ICN's CEO and co-founder is Kai Wawrzinek, a seasoned, billion-dollar company founder who successfully led his project, Goodgame Studios, to NASDAQ unicorn status in 2017. Commenting on the launch of $ICNT, Wawrzinek says: 'As a decentralized cloud provider, ICN is successful because it meets a genuine, growing need. ICN will win the decentralized infrastructure race — because we control the data layer. Once compute goes live, we'll unbundle the internet.'$ICNT will play a pivotal role in ICN's ecosystem, allowing anyone to participate in the network's growth by earning rewards from HyperNodes. $ICNT is used both for provisioning hardware capacity and for staking to secure cloud workloads. This ties the token to real-world infrastructure and the strong and growing demand that ICN's ecosystem is experiencing. ICN is riding a confluence of multiple strong tailwinds in the cloud industry. These include incredible demand for AI, associated hardware shortages, and an increasingly urgent need for sovereign cloud solutions apart from those offered by US hyperscalers. Combined, these drivers are calling for a new foundational layer for the next generation of the internet that can challenge the dominance of centralized tech giants – a layer ICN is pioneering. About Impossible Cloud Network (ICN) Impossible Cloud Network (ICN) is building a permissionless, open cloud network to rival Big Tech giants like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google. With resilient, high-performance decentralized cloud services, ICN is laying the foundation for a scalable, secure, and community-driven global cloud that supports enterprise, AI, gaming, applications, and end-users. With real-world adoption already generating million-dollar revenue and a vision for 200+ decentralized cloud services, ICN offers a true alternative to monopolistic hyperscalers.
