Gram sabha meetings held in village panchayats as part of Independence Day celebrations
He told the people that the government was implementing various welfare schemes for the benefit of the people. He said that he was captivated by the green cover in the village. Students and teachers of Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Elumalai participated at the gram sabha meeting held in Soolapuram. A resolution was passed at the gram sabha to achieve 100 % literacy rate at the village level. Another resolution was passed to completely abolish bonded labour. The students said they learnt about the welfare schemes and their implementation.
At the gram sabha meeting held at Thenkudipatti village in Kambur panchayat in Melur, the people passed a resolution opposing the SIPCOT industrial park project in Melur. They urged the authorities not to establish the industrial park in Melur.
The residents said that establishing the SIPCOT industrial park in the area would affect the flora and fauna of the region. They also said there were many ancient temples in the place. The area should be preserved, they said and urged the authorities to stop the works that have already commenced. They also passed a resolution for better implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme and better wages for the works being carried out under the MGNREGA scheme.

State to become world's ‘Capital of Innovation': CM
Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said Karnataka is already India's IT capital, and it is now stepping forward to become the world's 'Capital of Innovation'. He said Karnataka ranks second nationally in attracting foreign direct investment, and remains among the nation's leading industrial states. The Chief Minister said this while delivering his address at the 79th Independence Day celebrations here. 'Our government has never lagged in prioritising industrial growth. To manage and develop the state's largest industrial regions into global manufacturing hubs with world-class infrastructure, 18 industrial areas covering 44,166 acres have been declared Special Investment Regions. Alongside, we continue to encourage small industries,' Siddaramaiah said. He said, investors have expressed interest in bringing in over Rs 10 lakh crore in investments. Out of this, 48 per cent has already been processed under Single Window IT Platform. Karnataka remains among the nation's leading industrial states, with the manufacturing sector contributing 23.6 per cent to the state's GSDP, and the state ranks second nationally in attracting foreign direct investment, he said. 'A new Tourism Policy has been implemented to boost tourism in the state by developing world-class infrastructure and fostering entrepreneurship in the sector.' Noting that the government has rolled out multiple programmes for the welfare of labourers, particularly in the unorganised sector, the CM said, 'We will be soon implementing the Karnataka Labour Policy to ensure job security.' The state has made significant achievements in the services sector, which contributes 66.7 per cent to our GSDP, he said, 'We are not only safeguarding the interests of all workers engaged in this sector, but enacting 'Platform-Based Gig Workers Bill' for the welfare of over five lakh gig workers.' Under this Bill, the government is introducing an insurance scheme providing coverage of up to Rs 4 lakh for these workers, he added. The government is undertaking various initiatives for job creation, Siddaramaiah said and added that at Invest Karnataka-2025 (Global Investors Meet), held in February 2025, a total of 3,250 entrepreneurs participated. 'We signed agreements with 98 companies for investment of Rs 6,23,970 crore, and 1,101 companies have obtained necessary approvals for investments worth Rs 4,03,533 crore. These initiatives are expected to generate over 6 lakh jobs,' he said. In 2023-24, Karnataka attracted Rs 54,427 crore in foreign investment, ranking third in the country, Siddarmaiah said. 'In 2024-25, we have attracted Rs 56,030 crore, moving up to second place nationally,' he added. Stating that Karnataka is at the forefront in quantum technology, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and biotechnology, Siddaramaiah said the country's first quantum computer is in Karnataka. 'Our Karnataka Quantum Mission will shape the future of science.' 'We are not merely creating jobs. We are creating ideas, inventions, and innovations that change lives. These ideas are reaching far beyond our borders,' he added.

State-specific education policy soon: CM
Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said steps are being taken by the state government to frame a comprehensive 'Karnataka-specific' education policy which will lead to holistic development of the youth. A commission constituted for this purpose has recommended a two-language policy in school education and that Kannada or the mother tongue be the medium of instruction up to Class 5. In his address during the 79th Independence Day celebrations here, the chief minister also said the government was upgrading first-grade colleges and polytechnics in the state, and establishing 13 new technical education institutions. 'Recently, the State Education Policy Commission, chaired by Prof Sukhadeo Thorat, submitted its report. For the first time, steps are being taken to frame a comprehensive, Karnataka-specific education policy which will lead to holistic development of our youth,' Siddaramaiah said. The Commission had submitted its report to Siddaramaiah on August 8. It was constituted in October 2023 following the Congress' poll promise to replace the National Education Policy (NEP) of the BJP-led Centre. This year, the government is setting up 500 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore, Siddaramaiah said.

Shivakumar calls for five vows on 79th Independence Day
Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday called on the Congressmen to take a five-point oath on the 79th Independence Day to save sanctity of democracy. Addressing the partymen at the Independence Day celebration at the KPCC office, he said, 'We need to take a five-point oath today to save democracy, constitution and sanctity of elections and to fight injustice of tax devolution and to eliminate fascism.' 'Freedom is not something that has a price tag. Our leaders got us independence by sacrificing a lot. Hence, we need to take oath to save all the democratic values that came with independence. 'We need to remember these five oaths every day. We need to write a foreword to the second independence struggle in 2029. The first independence struggle in the country took place in Shivamogga district. Kittur Chennamma was the first one to defeat the British. Kannadigas have contributed a lot for the independence movement. We need to remember it today,' he reminisced. 'More than 6.5 lakh Congress men have sacrificed their life in the independence struggle. It is not enough if we hoist the tricolour and sing national anthem, we need to spread the message of our sacrifices to the future generations. Else, traitors will keep preaching us patriotism. It is the Congressmen who fought for independence but they are trying to defame these leaders,' he said. 'The Opposition asks about the contribution of the Congress party for the independence struggle. It is the Congress which got our country independence, national anthem, national flag. The tricolour is etched on our chest. It is the Congress which gave Indians individual, religious, intellectual, social, economic freedom.' 'We need to fight those who are denigrating the Constitution. We need to protect the aspirations of the Constitution. Vote theft is detrimental to the country as it jeopardizes the spirit of free and fair elections. Our leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have launched a nation-wide fight against vote theft from Karnataka.' Speaking to media later, he said, 'There is a new wave in the country. It is good to see all non-BJP parties joining hands. I am confident that there will be a massive change in the days to come.'
