Ryder Cup to return to Spain in 2031
The news was announced by the European Tour Group on Tuesday.

It will only be the fourth time the tournament will have been played in continental Europe after Paris (2018) and Rome (2023) followed Valderrama as hosts.
This year's Ryder Cup takes place at Bethpage Black in New York in September. Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland will be the venue in 2027 and Hazeltine, near Minnesota in 2029.
Guy Kinnings, chief executive of the European Tour Group, said: 'Today's announcement not only recognises Camiral as one of Europe's leading venues, but also the considerable contribution Spanish golf has made to the proud history of the Ryder Cup.
'The Ryder Cup has grown significantly since Spain last hosted it in 1997. It is one of the world's leading sporting events, which brings significant economic benefits and global exposure to a host region and country, so we could not be happier to be taking it to Costa Brava and Barcelona for the first time, and to Spain for the second time.'
Eleven Spaniards have represented Europe throughout the competition's history and Seve Ballesteros famously captained the team to victory over the United States at Valderrama.
Camiral, which is close to Girona and around an hour's travel from Barcelona, has also been confirmed as the host of the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship on the DP World Tour from 2028-30.
Jose Manuel Rodriguez Uribes, president of Spain's national sports council, said: 'The Government of Spain welcomes the selection of Camiral as the host venue for the 2031 Ryder Cup – a global sporting event that will showcase our country to millions of viewers around the world.
'The Ryder Cup is not only one of the most prestigious competitions on the international sporting calendar, but also an exceptional platform to demonstrate Spain's ability to successfully host major 21st-century events, combining world-class infrastructure, unparalleled natural environment and a globally renowned tourism, cultural and culinary offering.'
Juan Guerrero-Burgos, president of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, said: 'It is an honour for Spain to host the Ryder Cup for the second time in history.
'The previous experience at Valderrama in 1997 was extraordinary. The economic impact, media coverage and more importantly, the legacy to our sport, tourism and awareness of golf in our country were unbelievable.'

While no contact has been directly made with Madrid, the winger's preferred destination is said to be England. Holiday hotspot turns to 'ghost town' as tourists declare it's 'dead'
The summer holidays may be in full swing, but a once-bustling European tourist hotspot appears to have been abandoned by its usual visitors despite being in peak season With the summer months in full swing, many of us have booked getaways for guaranteed sunshine and a break from our day-to-day routine. One place that always welcomes a huge influx of tourists is Benidorm, popular with families and stag and hen dos alike. The Spanish resort is a hit with Brits thanks to its wallet-friendly accommodation, affordable food and drink, an abundance of activities - including a legendary nightlife scene. Typically, it gets busiest during June through to August. However, one Brit who relocated to the resort town has been left gobsmacked to see just how quiet it is in July this year. 24-year-old Harry Poulton, who moved to Benidorm after his first lads' holiday at 18, has described the current scenes on the Costa Del Sol as "like a ghost town". On TikTok, Harry said: "Benidorm is a ghost July?! I've never seen it this quiet. Where is everyone?!" In the clip, he showed himself stood by the main strip and commented: "It's the middle of July, look behind me, it's dead. I'm on the Benidorm strip, there's barely any people, this is crazy." "I cannot believe it, this is the quietest I've ever seen Benidorm," he added. One person who is holidaying in Benidorm wrote in the comments: "Currently in Benners. Our first trip here and I was expecting carnage. It's fully [sic] of families." "In Benny now, it's packed with families instead of stags and hens," commented one other. Another agreed and said: "We went July one year [and it] was all Spanish families around the pool." Another noted: "No one has any money. Also the price they charge to go in summer are scandalous." One other pointed out: "It's like this every July, August. Shocking but reality, it's too warm and very expensive." One other shared: "The price has gone up, we came two years ago it was coming up as one of the cheapest places to visit, now it's definitely not. However, once you have been you know it's worth every penny." One other wrote: "I was there between 8th and 15th and it was a lot quieter than it was two summers ago. Price of holidays are going through the roof." Thomas Cook, a former airline which now operated as an online-only travel agent, says August is the best time to visit Benidorm. The company said: "If you love hot and sunny weather, the best time of year to visit Benidorm would be during August, which is the hottest month in the resort. "The average temperature throughout August is a lovely 25C and has been known to reach around the 30C mark. If you enjoy a refreshing dip in the sea, August is the best month for that too, with the average sea temperature also being a comfortable 25C."

Scottie Scheffler and wife called PGA Tour star immediately after awkward incident
Childhood friends Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns have both ascended the ranks to become PGA Tour winners - but their friendship was massively put to the test in 2021 Scottie Scheffler and his wife reached out to PGA Tour star Sam Burns for a lengthy phone call after an awkward Ryder Cup incident threatened to "ruin" their friendship. World No. 1 Scheffler has been friends with the 22nd-ranked Burns since their teenage years. Their shared journey to stardom on the PGA Tour has only strengthened their bond. Burns, 29, hails from Louisiana and was even the best man at Scheffler's wedding when he married Meredith Scudder in December 2020. Their families have become close over the years, sharing rental homes at numerous tour stops, holidaying together, and even hosting couples' board game nights. But their close friendship, which is more like family, was threatened by an awkward and unusual scenario back in 2021. Both players were in the running for the final Ryder Cup roster spot, but US Captain Steve Stricker decided to snub five-time PGA Tour winner Burns, phoning him to inform him he wouldn't be on the team. The spot went to Scheffler, who had not yet claimed a victory on the tour. But rather than letting the awkwardness and any bad feelings linger, the Texan and his wife made the classy move to call his long-time friend, talking for half an hour while processing their emotions. "That can ruin a friendship if it's not something that's talked about," Scheffler later admitted. Burns recalled: 'Me, Caroline, Scottie and Meredith spent a long time on a phone call with these weird emotions of like, man, I am really sad but also happy for him. If it had been someone else, I would have been more disappointed that I wasn't on the team.' The decision turned out to be the right one, as Scheffler went on to defeat then-world No. 1 Jon Rahm in the US victory. Since then, Scheffler has been on an upward trajectory, clinching four majors and becoming the most dominant golfer since Tiger Woods. The 29-year-old has held the world's No. 1 ranking since May 2023, making his current streak at the top the longest since Woods' from June 2005 to October 2010. However, his meteoric rise hasn't affected their friendship, with Scheffler giving a sneak peek into what their morning routine would look like ahead of this year's US Open at Oakmont. Scheffler said: 'The conversation in the morning will be that we'll just hang out, there will be our two little kids running around. There's nothing crazy, there's not much to say. 'Sam has been preparing for moments like this for a long time and he's put himself into a position to win the golf tournament. He's going to go out and try to execute. At the end of the day, all he's going to do is try to do his best and that's what I'm going to do tomorrow as well.' Burns remains a proud friend, having watched Scheffler's remarkable achievements from up close. Aside from being Scheffler's biggest supporter on the fairways, he has also benefitted by receiving advice from the golfing powerhouse. Burns explained earlier this year: 'Scottie is obviously an incredible player, I don't think I need to say that. We spend a lot of time together and being able to talk to him, learn from him and ask him questions has been really cool. 'As good of a player he is, he's an even better guy and I think that's what makes it really special to watch, you want to root for someone like that. He's an easy guy to root for. It's been nice to pick his brain and ask him certain things.' When asked whether he'd felt slightly envious of Scheffler's achievements, Burns candidly responded: 'Of course, as a competitor, that's why we show up to play and we play to win. Watching him have success brings me a lot of joy. 'Him, his wife Meredith and son Bennett, they are an unbelievable family and it's been such a joy to watch how they steward that success to others around them. The amount of respect we have for them is very high.' While Scheffler delivered a stunning performance to claim his first Claret Jug by four shots at Royal Portrush last week, Burns ended up T45 after posting one-under.
