‘India have failed in one place': Ravichandran Ashwin points out how defensive pressure building is lost art in modern game

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin while praising India for their performance in the ongoing Test series against England, also pointed out one place where the Shubman Gill side had failed in. India are currently looking to take 4 England wickets as the hosts need just 35 runs to win on Day 5.
'India have failed in one place. So much runs on this pitch but still India find themselves in this hole. This is because bowling to build pressure is a lost art. It's not only for India, many teams are struggling. Barring Australia, every other team struggles with this. This is called defensive pressure building. We are playing in an era of T20s where the everyone just talks about taking wickets. If you just go after wickets just like that, you will concede a lot of runs. Wickets actually falls when you build pressure and build rhythm,' Ashwin said on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat.
'Prasidh Krishna got rhythm because Siraj bowled a maiden over and Prasidh got into a good rhythm, he was also bowling dots. We are not setting the right fields and bowling defensively at the right time. In this match also, we had a good session going into Lunch. The first 5 overs after lunch were extremely crucial. If you give 10 runs from those 5 overs, the pressure increases on the opponents. I am not saying you bowl defensive, wide outside off stump but Prasidh Krishna conceded 11 runs in the first over.'
'Offside there was a deep cover, he had 2 slips, he had a gully, he had a deep extra cover because the batter was stepping out and hitting it. He's got a 6-3 field: Offside has 6 and leg side had 3. I love Prasidh to bits but one bowler taking 5-6 wickets won't win you the game. As a bowling group, you need to build pressure. That is one area India have failed,' he added.
India currently are 1-2 down in the 5-match Test series and will be aiming to defeat England in the 5th and final Test to tie the series.

Ex-Indian cricketer's 'Bazball' clapback as India stuns England: 'Deserve this trolling'

Former Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer, who has a long history of online banter with ex-England captain Michael Vaughan, hit out at his earlier check-in amid the ongoing India-England test series. Vaughan had on August 3 sarcastically greeted Jaffer on X, saying, "Afternoon, Wasim Jaffer. I hope you are okay." Sharing a photo of himself relaxing on a charpai (baz or baaj in Marathi) in Dubai, Wasim Jaffer trolled Michael Vaughan.(X/WasimJaffer14) A day later, after Indian stunned England to clinch a six-run win in the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Jaffer was ready with a seething comeback. Sharing a photo of himself relaxing on a charpai (baz or baaj in Marathi) in Dubai, he quipped, 'Lying on a Baz having a ball, how about you @MichaelVaughan #ENGvIND." The post quickly earned support from Indian cricket fans. "Wasim Bhai waited for this so long," joked one user. Another added, 'This tweet will go in history as the greatest banter of all time. And for you @MichaelVaughan you truly deserve this trolling, every part of it.' "Bhai sahab yha alag hi series chal rhi thi. Aur Wasim Bhai series draw nhi jeet gye 5-0. (Brother, there was a whole different series going on here. And Wasim Bhai didn't just draw the series, he won it 5–0)," a third user. Others used memes to poke fun at Vaughan. "The way Wasim bhai lights up at Vaughan's name… it's like kids hearing the school's final bell!" said one of them. "I hope you are fine and your heart is still healthy and has recovered from the match for ages," said one Indian fan, commenting on Vaughan's post. India pulled off a stunning win at The Oval on Monday, edging out England by six runs in a dramatic finish to the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. England's attempt to chase down a record target, the highest at the venue in 123 years, unravelled in the first session of Day 5. Mohammed Siraj delivered a game-changing spell, grabbing three wickets in under an hour and sealing his fifth Test five-for to help India draw the series 2-2.

Ben Stokes on IND vs ENG series being a spicy affair: ‘Don't think my lads or India players have been going to bed crying over what was said'

The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy has been one of the more talked about Test series in recent memory with India and England players getting into quite a lot of on-field confrontations. India captain Shubman Gill's bust up with Zak Crawley at Lord's, Mohammed Siraj's run-in with Ben Duckett and Gautam Gambhir's angry exchange with the Oval curator are only some of the several flare-ups that have come to characterize this current series. England captain Ben Stokes, however, said that such incidents often happen in an intense series and once the match is over, the players let bygones be bygones. 'Yeah, it's been awesome. You know, India-England is always a massive series. There's always going to be moments where emotion comes out from both sides in particular when you get to a stage of the game where almost the game's on the line. I've said it few times before, I don't think any of my lads are going to be going to sleep crying over what was said. And I don't think any of the Indian players have been going to bed crying over what was said either. And I think it just shows that, you know, the passion and the desire that everyone who walks out representing their country with their nation's flag on their chest means,' Stokes said on Sky Sports. "It wasn't meant to be." Ben Stokes reacts to India winning the fifth Test 💬 — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) August 4, 2025 On Monday, India pulled off an incredible six-run victory over England in the seesawing fifth and final Test to secure a creditable 2-2 draw in a blockbuster series which ebbed and flowed over weeks of slugfest between the two cricketing powerhouses. The tireless Mohammed Siraj (5/104) emerged as the team's biggest hero with one of his finest bowling efforts. He finished the series with 23 wickets, the highest across both teams. Set a record target of 374, England were placed at 339 for six when bad light and torrential rain forced an early stumps on the fourth evening. India picked up the remaining four wickets in quick time, as England's second innings ended at 367 in 85.1 overs. Siraj and Prasidh Krishna (4/126) sizzled with the ball when their team needed them the most.

(Screengrab and AP Images) India were four wickets away when the early stumps were called on Day 4 due to rain. The pressure was on the visitors when they returned to the middle on Day 5 to get those four wickets. Rising to the occasion, Mohammed Siraj led from the front, grabbing three of those crucial scalps, including the final wicket of Gus Atkinson with a searing yorker that shattered the off-stump. His fiery spell powered India to a series-levelling 2-2 finish against England. Gavaskar was in the commentary box with Harsha Bhogle and Cheteshwar Pujara when Siraj uprooted Atkinson's off-stump. As Bhogle called the moment on the mic, Gavaskar was on his feet, clapping and applauding, while Pujara was all pumped up as the duo forgot to be neutral after Team India's incredible fightback to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Earlier, after the play on Day 3, Gavsakr gifted Gill a signed cap and shirt as a gesture of respect towards the youngster's performance in the series, where he scored 754 runs in five Tests. "I have got a gift for you in anticipation of you going past (me). At least you got something to aim for in the next series. It is just a little gift. It is a shirt with SG initials, someone made it for me, I am giving this to you, but I don't know if it will fit you. This is a cap which I give to very few people with my signature. All the best," Gavaskar said in a video posted on Sony Sports' Instagram. Siraj runs riot on Day 5 to pin England Meanwhile, England began the final day of the series needing just 35 runs with four wickets in hand to pull off a stunning chase of 374.
