Now, book tickets on Vande Bharat 15 minutes before it reaches station

CHENNAI: To enhance seat utilisation on Vande Bharat Express trains, Southern Railway has introduced a current reservation facility, allowing passengers to book tickets from stations en route up to 15 minutes before the train's scheduled departure from those stations. The new system came into effect on Thursday in eight VB express trains operated by the zonal railway, according to an official statement.
Under this arrangement, tickets for eight Vande Bharat Express trains can be booked even after the train has departed from its originating station. At present, online bookings are not permitted once the train departs. For instance, passengers travelling from Tiruchy to Nagercoil on the Chennai Egmore–Nagercoil Vande Bharat Express could previously book tickets only before the second chart preparation. Since the train departs Chennai Egmore at 5am, bookings were allowed only up to 4.45am.
Under the revised system, any vacant seats remaining after the train departs Chennai Egmore will be made available in the online booking system for stations en route. As the train reaches Tiruchy at 9 am, passengers boarding from there can now book tickets online up to 8.45 am, subject to seat availability, an official said.
The facility will be available for the following trains: Chennai Central–Vijayawada VB Express, Chennai Egmore–Nagercoil VB Express (both directions), Coimbatore–Bengaluru Cantonment VB express, Mangaluru Central–Thiruvananthapuram VB Express (both directions), Mangaluru Central–Madgaon VB express and Madurai–Bengaluru Cantonment VB express.
With this system, vacant seats will be available for current booking at intermediate stations, the statement said.

The Indian Railways system has improved our lives considerably. It connects every part of India and facilitates travel throughout the country. While India has the world's fourth-largest railway network, the country has yet to effectively implement a high-speed rail system. The first bullet train corridor in India is being constructed from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, and it will take some time to become operational. China boasts a high-speed rail network of 45,000 km, which makes it unparalleled in the world. For any train to be considered 'high-speed,' it must operate at least 200 km/h, according to the International Union of Railways. In India, the country's fastest train – the Vande Bharat Express – can reach a maximum speed of 180 km/h, yet operates at much lower speeds. Even the United States is behind most countries in developing a high-speed rail network. Spain has the second-largest high-speed railway network in the world after China. It has built a total of 3,966 km of high-speed rail so far. Japan comes in third position with 3,096 km, followed by France (2,800 km), the UK (2,214 km), Germany (1,658 km), Finland (1,120 km), Italy (1,117 km), and South Korea (877 km), all ranking among the top 10 countries with the most extensive high-speed rail systems. 🚆 World's longest high-speed rail networks: 🇨🇳 China: 45,000 kilometers 🇪🇸 Spain: 3,966 km 🇯🇵 Japan: 3,096 km 🇫🇷 France: 2,800 km 🇬🇧 UK: 2,214 km 🇩🇪 Germany: 1,658 km 🇫🇮 Finland: 1,120 km 🇮🇹 Italy: 1,117 km 🇰🇷 South Korea: 887 km 🇸🇪 Sweden: 860 km 🇬🇷 Greece: 672 km 🇷🇺 Russia:… — World of Statistics (@stats_feed) August 9, 2025 Following them are Sweden (860 km), Greece (672 km), Russia (650 km), Turkey (627 km), and Portugal (610 km). Ngp-Pune Vande Bharat Oversubscribed, Waiting List Crosses 150 for Sunday Journey

Nagpur: The newly launched Vande Bharat Express, connecting Nagpur and Pune, has turned into a runaway success within days of its introduction, with waiting lists already exceeding 150 for Sunday. A TOI check of the booking status revealed that the Nagpur–Pune Vande Bharat Express had a staggering waiting list of 153 passengers in chair car (CC) class by Saturday evening, while Tuesday's service already had 33 people on the waitlist. Executive chair car (ECC) tickets also showed a waiting list. The service does not operate on Mondays. The ECC seat costs around ₹3,815—higher than even many AC first-tier fares in sleeper trains on the route. The overwhelming response has even outshone older Vande Bharat services from Nagpur. The Nagpur–Secunderabad Vande Bharat Express had a waiting list of 61 for Sunday and 19 for Monday, while the Nagpur–Bilaspur Vande Bharat Express, which offers greater seating capacity than the Nagpur–Pune train, had no waiting list at all. Seat availability stood at 401 and 750 in chair cars for Sunday and Monday, respectively. The earnings, too, reflect this surge in popularity. In just the first two days of operation, the Nagpur–Pune Vande Bharat clocked an impressive revenue of ₹18.60 lakh, with occupancy levels crossing 134% when accounting for waiting list bookings. A railway official confirmed that the train has been running at near-full capacity since its launch and is expected to continue doing so during the upcoming festive season. Passenger accounts also highlight the train's significance during peak travel days. "Many people came for Rakhi and stayed back because of the Independence Day long weekend. The Vande Bharat is proving to be a boon in this situation. In the coming festive season, it will play an important role for travellers," said Aniket Pawar, a techie from Wardha currently working in Pune.
