Veteran pilot is AirAsia Philippines' new president
Budget carrier AirAsia Philippines on Monday announced its new president and general manager as the airline enters the next phase of sustainable growth.
Captain Suresh Bangah, a seasoned aviation professional with almost 30 years of experience, started as a first officer, pilot instructor, and auditor at AirAsia in 2003, then served as group director of flight operations at AirAsia Aviation Group Limited (AAAGL). He also became the chief pilot and director of flight operations at AirAsia X Berhad (AAX).
Bangah is succeeding Ricky Isla, who is retiring after serving AirAsia Philippines for six years.
Isla will be the chief advisor to the general manager during the leadership transition.
'With extensive management and industry experience—particularly in upholding the gold standard in safety and operational excellence, and a deep commitment to guest-centricity and Allstar values, Captain Suresh is well placed to build on the strong foundations laid by his predecessor, Ricky Isla,' Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group, said in a statement.
'Captain Suresh steps into this role at an important juncture. As AirAsia progresses into our next chapter, the Philippines remains a key pillar in our regional strategy—with strong potential in inter-island connectivity and broader regional integration into Asean and North Asia, among others,' he added.
Lingam also expressed gratitude for Isla's service during the time he described as 'one of the most turbulent periods in aviation history.'
'Stabilising operations, keeping our people grounded in purpose, and restoring confidence in the brand. We thank him for his steady leadership and are grateful that he will continue to support the transition as Advisor,' Lingam said.
Meanwhile, Bangah said he is looking forward to working with the AirAsia staff as the new president of AirAsia Philippines.
'I am committed to leading our talented team of Allstars to elevate our operations while raising the bar on the end-to-end guest experience,' Bangah said.
'With strong foundations in place, we look forward to collaborating with our partners and stakeholders to strengthen the local aviation ecosystem, while advancing Asean connectivity to the world as we connect guests to what matters most, from education and work opportunities to family and new adventures,' he added.
AirAsia Philippines noted that its aircraft flew almost 7 million passengers in 2024.
As it enters another chapter, the budget carrier plans to expand its fleet to 19 aircraft.
The carrier said this move 'will boost capacity to meet rising demand while sustaining a 90% load factor in 2025.' — Mariel Celine Serquiña/BM, GMA Integrated News

Singapore vows to support PH chairmanship of ASEAN in 2026
Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong vowed to support the Philippines in its ASEAN chairmanship next year. Wong made the commitment during the joint press conference with President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. at Malacañang Palace as part of his two-day official visit to the Philippines. The prime minister said that Singapore and the Philippines share a common interest in preserving ASEAN centrality and unity. ''This will be critical in accelerating the integration of the region and enabling us to unlock the full potential of ASEAN. It will also enable ASEAN to better engage our external partners, like the GCC countries or the EU,'' Wong said. ''The Philippines can count on Singapore's full support for its ASEAN chairmanship next year. And we will coordinate closely because Singapore takes over from the Philippines the ASEAN chairmanship the following year. So, we will work shoulder to shoulder, side by side,'' he added. Wong said he also looks forward to partnering with Marcos in advancing the next phase of bilateral relations. ''I am confident that under his leadership, the Singapore-Philippine relations will continue to grow from strength to strength,'' Wong said, adding that the ties between the two nations have never been better. ''It is a partnership that has been carefully nurtured over the decades by successive generations of leaders and officials. It is built on a high degree of mutual trust and respect, and it has enabled mutually beneficial cooperation over a wide range of areas,'' he said. — VBL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos back in PH after ASEAN Summit in Malaysia
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is back in the country after attending the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia. (Photo from PCO) President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has returned to the Philippines after taking part in the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Malaysia. The plane carrying the President and his delegation landed at 3:19 a.m. During the summit, Southeast Asian leaders reached an understanding that any bilateral agreements they might strike with the United States on trade tariffs would not harm each others' economies, Malaysia's premier Anwar Ibrahim said. Anwar, the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), said there was consensus during a leaders' summit in Kuala Lumpur that any deals negotiated with Washington would ensure the interests of the region as a whole were protected. Marcos has backed ASEAN's non-retaliatory measures as regards the recent shifts in the United States' tariff policy. ''We commend Malaysia's leadership in convening this special ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting and welcome the consensus to avoid retaliatory measures. This measured and unified approach upholds ASEAN's commitment to dialogue, diplomacy, and a rules-based multilateral trading system,'' Marcos said in his intervention at the ASEAN plenary. He said that the ''unexpected trade barriers'' could disrupt communities, supply chains, and the bloc's hard-earned progress. During the 2nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) - Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit, Marcos Jr. highlighted the need to ensure freedom of navigation to guarantee the flow of commerce in the South China Sea and the Arabian Sea. "The South China Sea and the Arabian Sea cover vital seabeds that serve as lifelines for regional and international commerce in both our regions. As such, it is necessary to provide the freedom of navigation to guarantee unimpeded commerce and to protect the marine environment through compliance to established international law, specifically UNCLOS," Marcos said Marcos said the summit was a testament to the Philippines' strong commitment to a shared vision of peace, security, and prosperity between the two interconnected regions. Marcos also urged for a greater political will in the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) at the sidelines of the summit Marcos said the joint initiatives in connectivity, trade and investment facilitation, food and energy security, ecotourism, and green development have advanced significantly, ''reinforcing our commitment to narrowing the development gap in our sub-region.'' —LDF, GMA Integrated News
