Consistent bowel movements indicate that your health is in its prime and all's well on the inside. While some people poop multiple times a day, some others poop once in a couple of days. With so much discourse online about the safety and ideal frequency of passing bowels, we decided to get to the end of it!
In conversation with Dr Jatin Yegurla, consultant gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and advanced therapeutic endoscopist at Apollo Clinic Manikonda, indianexpress.com found out the ideal number.
'It's normal for some people to do this every day, others every other day, and still others once a week. People engage in this behavior at a wide range of frequencies. What's considered normal for one is not so for another,' said Yegurla.
'If you pass three bowel movements a day, then that is alright so long as it is an established routine and all stools are well-formed. However, where all this happens out of the blue with discomfort, pain, or hardened mushy feces, then seeking the intervention of a healthcare professional may be necessary,' he explained.
In order to make sure you have healthy bowel movement in place, Dr Yegurla recommended these 5 lifestyle tweaks:
'Ingest a diet with lots of fiber that includes fruit, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains,' said Dr Yegurla, adding that people must drink plenty of water during the day so that stools can be soft and make the process of passing them easier. 'One of the options is to think about the consumption of probiotics, chief examples of which are found in yogurt, sauerkraut, and kefir to name a few,' he added.
Consistent physical activity can keep your digestive system working well and increase your likelihood of going to the bathroom regularly.
'Make an effort to go to the bathroom at the same time each day. It will help if you train your body to pass stools consistently,' advised the doctor.
He shared that a person's body reacts individually when exposed to various types of food, and adjustments should be made as appropriate, as some foods may also cause constipation or diarrhea.
'If you are under too much stress or anxiety, even your digestive system suffers. It is possible to reduce these symptoms when you learn meditation and find out how to relax through yoga. When you feel you have to poop, go immediately rather than postponing it since delaying may cause constipation,' shared Dr Yegurla.
Dr Vikas Jindal, consultant, dept of gastroenterology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi pointed out that if you happen to experience irregular bowel movements despite making these lifestyle changes, it may be indicative of underlying issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hypothyroidism, or a dietary imbalance.
'Seek medical advice if symptoms are accompanied by severe pain, blood in stools, or unexplained weight loss, as these could signal more serious conditions,' he advised.
Dr Rahul Dubbaka, Consultant, gastroenterology, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, further mentioned that over-the-counter laxatives, bulk-forming agents, and stimulants are popular solutions to this problem nowadays. But while they can help relieve the condition, one should always use them with caution and only under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

This workout claims to ‘keep you in fat-burning state all day'; we fact check

The internet is a wonderful place to find hacks that promise quick results without most of the hard work. In keeping with the same, we once came across a workout video that promises to keep you in fat-burning state all day. Well, apparently. The digital creator listed the following exercises, advising those on a weight loss journey to do them first thing in the morning on an empty stomach for 20 minutes. Does this hack really work? reached out to an expert to find out. Dr Irania Ravanan, consultant-diabetologist and physician, KMC Prakriya Hospitals, Chennai, said that the video is factually correct. 'Majority of the population fasts for 8–12 hours between dinner and breakfast. Around this time, fat burning is just beginning to happen. Exercising when one is already fat burning will result in better results,' she said. According to her, performing exercises that help build muscles lead to increased muscle mass. This will ensure greater energy utilization during the day and reduce the time taken to deplete glycogen stores in the liver and commencement of fat burning. Dr Ravanan explained that glucose is the most easily available and used fuel in the body, and the body has mechanisms to keep the glucose level within normal range. After eating, additional glucose is first stored as glycogen in the liver. The liver can store about 100 – 120g of glycogen. Any additional carbohydrate absorbed from the meal is then stored as fat. 'When we fast, the glucose in the blood is constantly replenished by breakdown of the glycogen to glucose. It can take 10 – 12 hours for the glycogen stores in the liver to be completely depleted. The speed of depletion will depend of the consumption during the state of fasting,' she said. Once the glycogen store is depleted, fat is metabolized to glucose. This is fat burning. Increasing levels of overweight and obesity is a significant healthcare problem among the adults and children today. Weight is an important but not the only marker of health of an individual. Reducing one's weight to achieve a BMI of 18 – 23 (for Asians) and 20 – 25 for others will significantly reduce healthcare risks. Dr Ravanan added that a combination of intermittent fasting and exercise that results in muscle building is the most efficient and long lasting solution to achieve weight loss. Intermittent fasting without exercise can cause significant muscle loss too, otherwise known as sarcopenia, which will reduce ones abilitiy to keep the weight off. Doctors raise alarm over rise in brain tumour cases

On the eve of World Brain Tumour Day (June 8), doctors in Hyderabad have sounded an alarm over the rising cases of brain tumour, and urged the public to recognise early symptoms and seek diagnosis and treatment. With over 40,000 new cases reported in India each year, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), medical experts say that delayed detection affects the outcome. Brain tumours, which can be benign or malignant, often begin with symptoms such as persistent headaches, seizures, memory loss, limb weakness, or vision and speech disturbances. Despite the slow onset, the condition can escalate quickly, turning into a life-threatening emergency, say doctors. Power of 3' campaign Care Hospitals is reinforcing its commitment to neurological emergency response through its 'Power of 3' campaign, a pledge that ensures emergency calls are answered within three rings, ambulances are dispatched within 30 minutes, and patients receive immediate ER attention. 'In neurological cases like brain tumours, every minute counts. Our campaign is not just about awareness but delivering timely, and expert care,' said Dr. Arun Reddy, Senior Neurosurgeon. As part of its campaign, Care Hospitals is focusing on symptom literacy, highlighting on warning signs like imbalance, seizures, or sudden memory issues that must not be ignored. 20% increase Olive Hospital doctors say they have noticed a 20% increase in brain tumour consultations over the last one year. 'Brain tumours are deceptive. Symptoms may appear ordinary, like a nagging headache but they could be signs of something far more serious. Early detection improves both survival and quality of life,' said Dr. Mohammed Mahmood Ali, Senior Neurologist. Breakthroughs in treatment Parallelly, doctors are optimistic about the breakthroughs in brain tumour treatment. 'We are witnessing a revolution in brain tumour care. Advanced neuro-navigation, intraoperative imaging, stereotactic radiosurgery, and robotic-assisted interventions are now standard practices. Precision medicine, including targeted therapies and FDA-approved drugs like vorasidenib for low-grade gliomas, is also changing outcomes,' said Dr. V. Naveen Reddy, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Renova Hospitals. Emerging strategies like immunotherapy, Tumour Treating Fields (TTFields), and even experimental mRNA vaccines are offering new hope. At the same time, Artificial Intelligence is being explored to assist with early, non-invasive diagnosis and treatment planning, he added.
