By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Timber Industries Association (STIA) has called on the State Government to strengthen policies and offer incentives to boost Industrial Tree Plantation (ITP) development, which still falls short of the 400,000-hectare target, standing at 183,634 hectares as of 2024. STIA President Tan Peng Juan said ITPs are critical to ensuring a sustainable timber resource and reducing pressure on natural forests. He urged support for companies developing ITPs and manufacturers using plantation timber, noting the need for appropriate machinery to process plantation-grown logs. He also raised concern over the influx of low-grade imported plywood and said STIA is working with the Forest Research Centre to establish a formaldehyde testing lab to ensure product safety standards. The association also pledged to monitor global efforts to list Shorea species under CITES Appendix II, and to ensure compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), noting recent engagements with EU officials in Brussels. On national policy, STIA emphasized the need to retain Sabah's own TLAS framework amid a federal proposal to harmonize certification systems. Employment contract stamp duty issues were also flagged, with STIA working with SEA to resolve discrepancies in the LHDN's online system. Tan, recently elected President of the Malaysian Timber Association (MTA), said MTA serves as the unified voice for the industry, driving engagement with stakeholders on sustainability, innovation, and global advocacy. * Read full report in tomorrow's print paper or log in or sign up for e-paper and premium online news access. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss.

Grab surpasses Q2 revenue estimates with RM651 mil, 23pc growth

Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Grab Holdings reported a 23pc year-on-year revenue jump to US$819 million for Q2, surpassing analysts' forecast of US$812 million. Adjusted EBITDA came in at US$109 million, meeting expectations. Despite tough competition from Indonesia's GoTo Group and other new players, Grab added 2 million monthly users, reaching 46 million, helped by broader product offerings. Speculation of a Grab-GoTo merger resurfaced after Grab sold US$1.5 billion in convertible bonds, but the company denied ongoing talks. Discussions had reportedly slowed due to regulatory concerns, with Indonesia's antitrust body warning against monopolistic outcomes. Shares remain well below Grab's 2021 IPO price, though they've risen 60pc over the past year. The company, backed by Uber, is also pushing into digital finance, expecting to issue over US$1 billion in loans by year-end, and exploring autonomous technologies. CFO Peter Oey said new features like family accounts and pooled food orders are driving user spending and will 'continue building on the product-led strategy.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? South Africa faces 30% US tariff after failing to reach trade deal

Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 By: Reuters Text Size: South Africa's trade minister Parks Tau said they are working to defend jobs and stay competitive amid global economic shifts. (EPA Images pic) JOHANNESBURG: South Africa faces a 30% tariff on its exports to the US starting next week, a move expected to cost tens of thousands of jobs after the country failed to secure a trade deal before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump. In an executive order on Thursday, Trump slapped new tariff rates ranging from 10% to 41% on dozens of countries as he seeks to reshape global trade on more favourable terms for the US. The order said the higher import duty rates would take effect in seven days. South Africa has tried for months to negotiate a deal with Washington and offered to buy US liquefied natural gas and invest US$3.3 billion in US industries in exchange for lower tariffs. But the effort was unsuccessful, even after Pretoria made a last-minute attempt to improve its offer. South Africa's trade minister Parks Tau said the higher tariff was a threat to the country's export capacity, particularly in key sectors such as automotive, agro-processing, steel and chemicals. 'We are working with urgency and resolve to implement real, practical interventions that defend jobs and position South Africa competitively in a shifting global landscape,' Tau said in a statement late on Thursday. The US is South Africa's second-largest bilateral trading partner after China. South Africa's top exports to the US include cars, iron and steel products, and citrus fruits. The tariff hike underscores how South Africa's strained relations with Washington are now having economic consequences. South African officials have said that their trade negotiations with the US were closely intertwined with geopolitical and even domestic policy issues, including South Africa's affirmative action law which Trump disapproves of. The US government is also unhappy with South Africa for bringing a genocide case against Israel at the World Court and for its land reform policy which aims to address racial inequality in land ownership that is a legacy of apartheid. Trump has falsely claimed that the South African government is seizing white farmers' land. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysia hails 19pc US tariff as positive outcome, markets rebound on economic plan

Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 By: The Edge Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has welcomed the lower-than-expected 19pc US tariff on its exports as a 'positive outcome', with the government pledging steps to mitigate the impact while advancing long-term industrial reforms. The announcement came as local markets reacted positively to both the tariff decision and the unveiling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) said Malaysia had stood firm on key policy red lines during negotiations, securing the tariff rate without compromising its sovereign right to implement critical socio-economic policies. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the deal reflected Malaysia's credibility as a reliable trade and investment partner, expressing gratitude to US counterparts for their cooperation. To counter the tariff's effect on exports, Miti will promote the use of Malaysia's 18 free trade agreements, support small and medium enterprises, and advance key industrial strategies including the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, the Green Investment Strategy, and the National Semiconductor Strategy. Miti also plans outreach programmes to help exporters adapt and aims to strengthen US-Malaysia trade ties. Despite global economic uncertainties, Malaysia's strong domestic demand, policy reforms, and infrastructure pipeline are expected to buffer external shocks. The US is Malaysia's largest export market (RM198.65 billion) and top source of foreign investment (RM32.82 billion in 2024). Investor sentiment was buoyant on Friday, with the FBM KLCI rising to 1,533.10 points before pausing at 1,531.97, reversing previous losses and outperforming broader Asian markets. Gains were led by banking and construction stocks, notably CIMB (+4pc) and Gamuda (+4.2pc). The US tariff announcement and the RM430 billion 13MP development plan, averaging RM86 billion annually through 2030, drove optimism particularly for infrastructure and renewable energy sectors. Analysts from Phillip Capital and Hong Leong Investment Bank said the tariff outcome was milder than expected, and the government's focus on long-term infrastructure builds investor confidence. While the ringgit weakened slightly against the US dollar, government bonds held steady, indicating continued investor confidence in Malaysia's macroeconomic direction. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
