Soccer-Svensson propels Dortmund to Club World Cup knockout stage
CINCINNATI, Ohio (Reuters) -A first-half goal from Daniel Svensson secured Borussia Dortmund's place in the Club World Cup round of 16, as they claimed a 1–0 victory over South Korea's Ulsan HD on Wednesday. The German side started strongly, with Jobe Bellingham, Felix Nmecha and Karim Adeyemi posing a constant threat to Ulsan's defence and Svensson broke the deadlock in the 36th minute with a close-range strike. Ulsan goalkeeper Hyeon-Woo Jo made several impressive saves to prevent Dortmund from extending their lead, denying Serhou Guirassy's header and strikes from Pascal Gross and Yan Couto. Dortmund finished top of Group F, with Brazilian side Fluminense in second after they drew 0-0 with South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Vinicius, Mbappe have to defend: Real Madrid's Alonso
Last season under Carlo Ancelotti Los Blancos failed to win a major trophy and the Italian was at times exasperated with his forward line's unwillingness to work hard enough for the sake of the team as a whole. 26 Jun 2025 09:26am Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid C. Last season under Carlo Ancelotti Los Blancos failed to win a major trophy and the Italian was at times exasperated with his forward line's unwillingness to work hard enough for the sake of the team as a whole. (Photo by Michael Owens / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / Getty Images via AFP) "What I am certain of is that we need and want everyone to defend -- the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively," Alonso told a news conference ahead of Madrid's Club World Cup clash against RB Salzburg. "They have to get close together, they have to know how we want to press, and without that, things will be very complicated. "Vini, Jude (Bellingham), Fede (Valverde), Kylian, those up front, the defence has to push forward too." Ancelotti said last season that he was not concerned if Mbappe pressed or not and wanted the striker to focus on goalscoring. The 26-year-old netted 43 goals across all competitions in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu after his move from Paris Saint-Germain. Real Madrid face Austrian side Salzburg in Philadelphia on Thursday, looking to seal top spot in their final Group H match, but will be without Mbappe. The French superstar was not named as part of the squad to take on Salzburg as he continues his recovery from a stomach bug. Mbappe missed the team's first two matches but returned to training on Wednesday. "I was happy to see him on the (training) pitch, it was the first day he's got his boots back on and has been running, he's doing well, but not enough to play tomorrow with the level that we need," said Alonso. "He said it himself when we spoke after training, he prefers to be ready for the last 16, he's in the recovery process, he wasn't perfect for tomorrow." In Madrid's second match, a 3-1 win over Mexican side Pachuca, Brazilian forward Rodrygo was left on the bench, amid speculation he could depart the club this summer. However Alonso said the Brazilian was still a valuable member of the team. "He's doing well, he's enthusiastic, it was a technical decision (to bench him) the other day, but Rodrygo is still an important player, we will need him in this Club World Cup," said Alonso. "He's a special player and he will have a big role at this tournament." - AFP More Like This

Soccer-Mbappe to miss Salzburg game but likely fit for knockout rounds, says Alonso
Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Real Madrid Training - Gardens North Country District Park, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, U.S. - June 25, 2025 Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe and Brahim Diaz during training REUTERS/Marco Bello PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) -Kylian Mbappe will miss Real Madrid's final Club World Cup group-stage game against RB Salzburg as he continues his recovery from illness but should be ready for the knockout phase if they progress, manager Xabi Alonso said on Wednesday. The French forward returned to training earlier in the day, after being struck down by acute gastroenteritis last week, but Alonso said the decision to skip Thursday's match was made to prioritise the player's full recovery. "It was his first day back in boots, his first day running a little, and he did well," Alonso told reporters at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field. "But he's not fully recovered yet. "We talked about it after training and he prefers to rest and recover properly for when we go through. And if we make it to the round of 16 he'll be available, but he was still in the recovery process and wasn't perfect for tomorrow." Mbappe, who received treatment in hospital in Miami last week, has already missed Real's 1-1 draw with Al-Hilal and their 3-1 victory over Pachuca, a win they achieved despite playing most of the match with 10 men. The Spaniards lead Group H with four points, ahead of Salzburg on goal difference, with Al-Hilal on two points and Pachuca yet to secure a point. Alonso, who recently took the reins at Real following Carlo Ancelotti's departure to manage Brazil, said they had two objectives for Thursday's game. "The first is to win and finish top of the group. The second is to continue improving as a team ahead of the knockout stage," he added. While Manchester City are looming as potential opponents in the round of 16, Alonso said his side would not even think about the permutations. "It's a bad idea to do the math tomorrow," he said. "The only decision is to finish first and give it your all. We're going out to win." (Reporting by Fernando Kallas; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

Club World Cup: Mbappe left out of Real Madrid squad for Salzburg clash despite return to training after illness
PHILADELPHIA, June 26 — Kylian Mbappe has been left out of the Real Madrid squad for today's final Club World Cup group game against Red Bull Salzburg, despite returning to training following illness. The French superstar did not feature in the list of 23 players named by coach Xabi Alonso and published by the club for the match in Philadelphia, in which the two teams are targeting a place in the last 16. Mbappe had returned to training yesterday after missing Real's first two matches at the tournament in the United States due to illness. He was taken to hospital last Thursday for tests and treatment after suffering gastroenteritis, before later being released. He played no part in Real's opening game, a 1-1 draw with Saudi side Al-Hilal in Miami, or the 3-1 defeat of Mexico's Pachuca at the weekend. Alonso did indicate after the latter game that Mbappe was on the mend, saying: 'He is doing better, he is recovering.' Real posted images of Mbappe in training on Wednesday on their website, as the squad worked out at their Florida base before travelling north in the afternoon to Philadelphia. It is there, at Lincoln Financial Field, where Madrid will take on the Austrians in their final Group H match and will be looking for a victory which will confirm their progress to the last 16 in first place in the section. A draw can also take them through to the next round, with Manchester City and Juventus the possible opponents in the last 16. Mbappe has scored 43 goals in 56 appearances since joining Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain last year. His last game was for France in a 2-0 win away to Germany in the UEFA Nations League on June 8. — AFP
