Visually impaired girl lights up ICSE results with 94% marks

Time of India30-04-2025

Lucknow: Ruk jana nahin tu kahin haar ke, kaanton pe chalke milenge saaye bahaar ke.
It was this inspirational song from the 1974 movie 'Imtihan' that kept visually impaired
Baani Chawla
motivated during her ICSE preparation. And the fruits of labour were visible on Wednesday when the Class 10 girl scored 94% marks in her imtihan.
Baani, also a talented singer, is visually impaired since birth. The Lucknow girl has performed in more than 1,000 musical stage shows across the country. If one is hardworking then complaining about one's physical constraints is merely an excuse, says the student of
Lucknow Public College
, Jankipuram, who aspires to become a civil servant.
"I was confident of a good score. Studies are my only enjoyment and music my stress buster. Of all the subjects, I found it challenging to let my scribe write mathematics and physics because while dictating the answers I would often get mental calculations wrong," said the eleated girl who will now pursue humanities. Asked about the success mantra, she said it was thorough revision of every chapter until all concepts were clear."Baani has been a fighter since birth. We had premature twins but we lost one of them. Baani was put on ventilator for 1.5 months after birth; she fought and survived. But unfortunately she suffered from Retinopathy of Prematurity and lost vision in eyes," said Baani's father Vishal Chawla, who is into construction business.
"My wife Shweta and I always knew that our daughter could turn the impossible into possible through her grit and diligence. We got her admitted to Lucknow Public College. With the support of the school, she used to attend classes, and then her mother, her younger sister Guneet and her tutor Anju Mishra used to read text to help her memorise subjects. The National Association for the Blind in Indiranagar also guided us on how to teach her," shared Vishal.
"This is not the first time she has surprised us with her excellence. She is gifted with a beautiful voice. She became interested in music from the age of three. We got her a keyboard and without any formal training, she began doing stage shows at the age of 8. She has won over 100 awards and has even been felicitated by Governor Anandiben Patel," said the proud father.
Though overwhelmed with their daughter's academic feat, Baani's parents profusely thanked her paper writer Ridhima Sharma, a Class 9 student, calling her an angel, who agreed to write the examination for Baani. Vishal said the biggest challenge for them to find a scribe as parents usually don't allow their wards to be a writer since they have to write for over 4 hours for students like Baani, as the board gives extra 90 minutes to specially-abled students. But Ridhima did it for us, after writing her Class 9 exams she would write pre-board and then board examinations of Baani, said Vishal.

I am a beautiful misfit in the industry: Vishal Jethwa

, currently in the news for his film Homebound which got a standing ovation during its premiere at Cannes, says that he still feels like a misfit in the industry. Vishal, who has done TV shows like Sankatmochan Mahabali Hanuman, Peshwa Bajirao and Ek Duje Ke Vaaste, talks to us about how transitioning from TV is difficult, his willingness to do a Gujarati film and more. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'Martin Scorsese backing our film was a blessing' Talking about Martin Scorsese backing Homebound as an executive producer, he says, 'It was a blessing. Sometimes, just working on a project backed by a legendary filmmaker does the trick for you. I couldn't meet him or speak to him, but I hope he has seen my work in the film and has good things to say. Unknowingly, I have learnt a lot from his films, especially Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer Shutter Island. Throughout the film, I kept wondering how it could be treated so well visually. Only a filmmaker of his calibre could do it.' 'Had nothing else to offer on TV as an actor' Vishal, who has mostly done historical and mythological shows like Chakradhari Ajay Krishna, Bharat Ka Veer Putra: Maharana Pratap and others, says that at one point, he didn't know what else to offer as an actor. 'I felt limited doing historical and mythological shows and they felt similar after a point. I had nothing more to explore as an actor,' he says. Vishal also feels that 'TV actors are looked at in a certain way.' He elaborates, 'I have met a lot of filmmakers and most people think that I am a TV actor. Every actor should be looked at in the same way, irrespective of the medium. However, actors also need to work on their craft, mould themselves and accept changes that come with working in different mediums.' He adds, 'After I was offered Mardaani 2, it changed my perspective about my acting skills and gave me a larger canvas to perform. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now I worked on myself to be fit for the big screen.' 'I am keen to do a Gujarati film' Vishal, a Gujarati by birth, is 'keen to do a Gujarati film.' He says, 'I want to work in as many languages as possible, and I want to start with Gujarati. It's my mother tongue; I want to do some amazing work and help the industry progress. I have watched Hellaro, Bey Yaar, Chhello Divas and Raado, and I have always wanted to bring out that Gujaratiness in my work.' Vishal's video of singing a Gujarati folk song has gone viral on Instagram, where he said that he loves music more than acting. Is he open to singing for films? He says, 'Why not? I really love and enjoy the music of my land and we have seen how well it has been received by the masses in our country. I would love to sing for a nice project and hopefully, act in it too.' (Image Credits: Instagram) 'I still feel uncomfortable while attending industry parties' In one of his recent interviews, Vishal spoke about how he still feels like a misfit in the industry. He explains, 'Since childhood, I have been brought up very differently. We belonged to a lower middle-class family, so my approach to things and social behaviour are very different. I still feel uncomfortable while attending industry parties. I didn't even know what event-appropriate clothing meant.' However, he adds, 'I am a beautiful misfit in the industry. Professionally, I don't have an issue, it's on a very personal level.' 'Walking the red carpet at Cannes was magical' Talking about Homebound getting a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, he says, 'Walking the red carpet for my film was a magical experience. At that moment, I was living my dream and felt like I was at the peak of my career. It also felt great when our film received a nine-minute standing ovation, as I was representing the film with some of the most influential people from Bollywood. Having my mom with me throughout this experience felt special. '

Levy of 30% interest by film financiers not usurious, says Madras High Court

The Madras High Court has refused to accept the argument of actor Vishal Krishna Reddy that the levy of interest at the rate of 30% per annum by financiers in the film industry was usurious and against the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act, 2003. Justice P.T. Asha also found the actor to have made false averments on oath in a case related to the repayment of ₹30.05 crore with 30% interest from February 16, 2021, and rejected his claim of having signed the loan agreement with Lyca Productions Private Limited in 2019 without reading its contents. The judge decreed a suit filed by Lyca Productions in 2021 for recovering the entire loan liablity with interest. Finding the actor to have not been forthcoming with his bank statement and not attempting to discharge even a part of the loan amount, the judge also imposed costs on him. Senior counsel V. Raghavachari, representing Lyca Productions, told the court that Mr. Vishal had originally taken a loan of ₹21.29 crore from Anbuchezhian of Gopuram Films for making a movie titled Marudhu in 2016. Since the actor could not discharge the liability, Lyca had taken over the loan. After settling the entire amount to Gopuram Films in different tranches, Lyca made Mr. Vishal sign an agreement on September 29, 2019, agreeing to repay the loan amount with interest before December 31, 2020. However, since he did not honour the agreement, the present civil suit was filed in 2021. Refuting the claim made by Lyca, the actor denied having taken a loan of ₹21.29 crore either from Gopuram Films or Lyca Productions. He said, Marudhu was produced by Gopuram Films and and hence, the question of taking a loan would not arise at all when he had only acted in the movie for remuneration. He also claimed to have had a financial dealing only for a sum of ₹12 crore with Gopuram Films and said that he had signed the 'one-sided' agreement with Lyca in 2019 without reading all of the clauses because he had reposed total trust upon the production company and did not expect any foul play. He also argued that the interest rate of 30% demanded by Lyca was usurious and exorbitant. On the other hand, Mr. Raghavachari told the court that 30% was the standard rate of interest levied by film financiers because they give away crores of rupees in loan, and that Gopuram Films had also charged 30% After recording their submissions, Justice Asha recalled that the High Court had in Indiabulls Financial Services Limited versus Jubilee Plots and Housing Private Limited (2010) refused to interefere with the 33% interest rate, and held that it would not be violative of the provisions of the 2003 Act. Then, the court had categorically stated that the 2003 Act was intended to protect gullible people who borrow small amounts of loan and get slapped with usurious interest rates and not for mammoth loan transactions carried out for huge sums under the Negotiable Instruments Act of 1881. 'In the instant case, the defendant (Mr. Vishal) has signed the dotted lines agreeing to pay interest at 30% p.a... After having promised the plaintiff (Lyca) that the amount would be repaid with interest at 30% p.a., the defendant is now attempting to renege on his agreement,' Justice Asha concluded.
