Use internal channels to air grievances, S'gor PKR members told

PETALING JAYA : Two Selangor PKR leaders have reminded members and elected representatives to refrain from making public statements that could damage the party's image.
Selangor PKR secretary Khairuddin Othman said criticism should be raised internally to avoid creating a negative perception of the party.
'We urge all members to focus on strengthening the party in Selangor. Don't shoot ourselves in the foot with public remarks.
'We're part of the government, and we have internal party channels that should be used,' he told FMT.
Earlier, Subang PKR deputy chief Wan Hasifi Amin expressed a loss of confidence in the constituency's MP, Wong Chen, and suggested he step down from the elected post if the party's struggle no longer aligned with his.
He said Wong's recent statement, where he lamented the lack of reforms carried out by the unity government, was unnecessary, especially coming from a PKR MP.
Wan Hasifi also claimed that the three-term MP did not attend a single divisional meeting since being elected a PKR central leadership council member in 2022, a post he lost in the party's recent elections.
He called for Wong to be dropped as a candidate in the next general election, saying Subang PKR wanted an MP who was not 'distant' from the grassroots and heeded the voice of the people.
PKR Youth deputy chief Izuan Kasim said all PKR leaders, including those at the grassroots level, should focus on uniting members following the party's recently concluded elections.
'PKR should be the voice of the people and help explain government programmes,' said Izuan, who is also the Kota Damansara assemblyman.
'I respect every member's views and criticism, but not all of them need to be aired through the media.'
Wong announced on Sunday that he was taking a two-week break from work for a family holiday, during which he would ponder his future in politics.
Wong said he could not shake a deep worry that the government, led by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, would have little to show in terms of institutional reforms at the end of its parliamentary term.

Salleh Said Keruak, the Sabah Umno treasurer, said rather than letting overlaps cause friction or lead to proxy independent candidates, it would be more constructive to consider friendly contests. 'A friendly contest is not a free-for-all. It's a planned, respectful arrangement where parties agree to contest the same seat, with the understanding that whoever wins, the seat remains part of the coalition,' he said in a Facebook post. He said that to manage the arrangement effectively, parties must balance political realism with respect for one another's grassroots presence. 'Friendly contests are not about ego – they're about finding practical solutions on the ground. 'If at least half of Sabah's 73 state seats can be settled without overlaps, that already builds a strong foundation. For the rest, friendly contests should only be used when negotiations don't produce agreements, and even then, only with a clear understanding,' he said. Salleh, a former chief minister, said factors to be considered before deciding on friendly races included past election results, local support levels, proposed candidates, and potential seat swaps. He said this approach, which was also taken in countries like India, Germany, and Indonesia, would help reduce tension among party machineries, maintain unity, and give voters clarity. 'Some may argue that it's better to go solo and form a coalition after the election. But that creates uncertainty – for voters, candidates, and future governance. It opens the door to personal agendas and unstable post-election deals. 'A pre-election coalition gives clarity, builds trust, and leads to more stable outcomes,' he said. Last week, Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin said the party would not work with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah in the state election and would only consider joining forces with the coalition after the outcome of the polls. GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said on Thursday that the coalition would only decide on its alliances for the state election at its Supreme Council meeting after Aidiladha. While Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan have already announced an alliance for the Sabah polls, talks are said to be ongoing to rope GRS into the pact.

(Facebook pic) SERDANG : Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud says he is open to 'friendly contests' between allies if the ongoing negotiations over seat allocations ahead of the Sabah state election fail. Mustapha said PKR is working to prevent clashes between parties in the government coalition, and aiming for fair seat distribution without overlaps. 'We're still negotiating and doing our best to avoid contests. The goal is fair allocation without duplication,' he said. 'But if talks break down, friendly contests are an option. It's common in politics.' He did not specify which parties are involved in the negotiations. Mustapha, the deputy higher education minister, was speaking to reporters at an event at Universiti Putra Malaysia here today. Sabah Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak yesterday suggested that overlapping seats be handled through friendly contests, while maintaining unity and a shared objective. He said this approach was better than allowing internal tensions or encouraging sponsored independent candidates. Malaysia to renew tariff negotiations in Washington, says Tengku Zafrul
KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz will travel to Washington, United States (US), on June 18 to resume negotiations over tariffs imposed on Malaysian goods. Tengku Zafrul said he had briefed the cabinet earlier today on the upcoming visit. 'I will be going to the United States next week, and we will continue in-person negotiations. Previously, discussions were held online. I will meet with the US Trade Representative in Washington next week,' he told reporters after witnessing the signing ceremony of the DayOne Syndicated Financing and Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme. He added that he is scheduled to meet US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, as well as other officials from the US administration and investors. Tengku Zafrul will also take the opportunity to engage with several business chambers, companies, and interest groups, including the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and the US-Asean Business Council. Earlier, on April 24, Tengku Zafrul led a high-level delegation to Washington, where he held talks with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Greer. During that meeting, Tengku Zafrul stressed the importance of sustained engagement and reiterated Malaysia's commitment to finding constructive solutions to the concerns raised by the US. Malaysia has expressed its readiness to negotiate in four key areas: narrowing the trade deficit, addressing non-tariff barriers, strengthening technology protection and security, and exploring the potential for a bilateral trade agreement. On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced tariff measures affecting around 60 countries, including a 24 per cent levy on most Malaysian goods.
