Madurai student to play int'l disability cricket series in England

Madurai: G Vikash Ganeshkumar, a 21-year-old student from The Bethshan Higher Special School in Pasumalai, Madurai, is set to represent India in the upcoming International T20 Mixed Disability Cricket Series against England. The series is scheduled to be held in London from June 15 to July 4. Vikash is one of only four intellectually disabled players in the 16-member Indian squad and the sole representative from Tamil Nadu. The series is organised by the Differently Abled Cricket Council of India (DCCI) in collaboration with the England and Wales Cricket Board. Vikash's mother, Prema Latha, recalls discovering that her son was mildly intellectually disabled at the age of five. "He studied in a mainstream school until Class 8. Later, we enrolled him at Bethshan, where teachers encouraged him to try different sports. Though he always loved cricket, it wasn't a part of the Special Olympics programme back then," she said. His father, Ganesh Kumar, a sub-inspector in charge of the dog squad with Madurai police, said Vikash initially explored other sports like badminton to qualify for special events. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo "But the moment cricket was included in the mixed disability category, he focused fully on it. He first played at the district level, then qualified for the state-level competition in Perambur. The DCCI selectors noticed him and even asked for videos of him batting and bowling," he said. That video, combined with his state-level performance, earned him a call from the DCCI a month ago. "That day was the happiest moment of his life. His dream was always to wear the India jersey. As a mother, I often wondered if it would be possible. But my mother always believed he would achieve something great — and today, he has," said Latha. Vikash is currently undergoing training in Jaipur and will fly to England on Saturday. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Gill, Rahul score fifties in intra-squad practice match against India A ahead of England Test

Beckenham [UK], June 13 (ANI): Indian skipper Shubman Gill and KL Rahul were among the runs while Shardul Thakur delivered a solid performance with the ball on Day 1 of the intra-squad match between the Indian senior side and India A at Beckenham on Friday. The official X handle of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted some pictures from the match. 'Beckenham. A solid Opening Day in the Intra-Squad game! Half-centuries for KL Rahul & Captain Shubman Gill. Shardul Thakur amongst the wickets,' posted BCCI. KL Rahul had also slammed scores of 116 and 51 during the second unofficial Test against England Lions at Northampton. Gill, who has a poor average of 14.66 in England and has scored just 88 runs in six innings across three matches here with a best score of 28, will take plenty of confidence from his knock. Thakur, who scored knocks of 27 (in first unofficial Test) and 19 and 34 (in the second unofficial Test) against England Lions and also took two wickets against them, also got some valuable game time as he battles a young Nitish Kumar Reddy for the spot of a pace-bowling all-rounder in the team. India's first Test against England at Leeds from June 20 will mark the start of a new era under newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill, as he aims to lead a new-look team to glory following the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Tests and Ravichandran Ashwin from international cricket. The series will be held from June to August 2025, with matches scheduled at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. Gautam Gambhir Returns To India From England Due To Medical Emergency: Report

Last Updated: Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has reportedly returned home from England days before the Tendulkar-Anderson trophy due to a family emergency. Indian men's head coach Gautam Gambhir has reportedly been forced to return to India from England due to a medical emergency just days before the start of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy on June 20. According to Sportstar, his mother, Seema, has suffered a cardiac arrest and is currently in Intensive Care. Gambhir reached England with the team on June 7. This is his fourth Test series as the head coach. He reportedly missed India's net session on June 12, too, and is no longer with the squad. The date of his possible return is currently uncertain, though some reports say he might come back by next week. Gambhir's return comes on the day of India's intra-squad game. The match, likely to be played between teams drawn from the senior and India 'A' squads, will be played behind closed doors in Leeds, i.e., it won't be broadcast or streamed, and a scorecard is unlikely to be available either. According to news agency PTI, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate will assume the charge for the match. Bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak will assist him. It's the last bit of red-ball preparation for several first-time members, who are coming straight from the IPL. The first Test will be played in Headingley from next Friday. Earlier, Gambhir gave a stirring motivational speech to his young team about moving on from the retirements of greats like Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and previous captain Rohit Sharma. 'All I want to say is there are two ways of looking at this group. One is that we are without our three most experienced players, or we've got this phenomenal opportunity to do something special," Gambhir said in a video shared by the BCCI, which was shot before his departure. 'And when I look around this group, the hunger, the passion and the commitment to do something special… If we make sacrifices, if we come out of our comfort zones, if we start fighting, not every day, but every session, every hour and every ball, I think we can have a memorable tour. So make sure we start that today. Start enjoying playing for the country because there's no bigger honour," he added. First Published:
