Pilots' organisation urges inclusion in Air India crash probe as observer
The Airline Pilots' Association of India (ALPA India) on Friday once again urged the Centre to include its representatives as observers in the ongoing investigation into last month's Air India crash that claimed 260 lives, reported PTI. ALPA India has repeatedly asked to be part of the inquiry process. In line with global best practices and Annex 13 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the association said pilot groups may assist investigations as technical advisers. 'ALPA India once again renews its request to be included as an observer in the ongoing investigation of VT-ANB, to contribute professionally and help strengthen the safety framework of Indian aviation,' the association said in a statement, as quoted by PTI. The request comes a day after the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) stated that it was premature to reach any 'definite conclusions' regarding the cause of the crash on the basis of its preliminary report. It further added that a final report will be published with the root causes once the inquiry is complete, and urged people not to spread unverified claims. 'The purpose of the AAIB's investigation and preliminary report is to provide information about what happened. At this stage, it is too early to reach any definite conclusions... AAIB appeals to all concerned to await publication of the final investigation report after completion of the investigation. AAIB will also publish updates as and when required, which have technical and public interest,' G V G Yugandhar, director-general of the AAIB, said. The statement was issued just hours after The Wall Street Journal published a report alleging that Captain Sumeet Sabharwal had turned off the fuel switches moments before the crash. The Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which was flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on June 12, crashed after take-off, killing all but one person aboard. A total of 260 casualties, including people on the ground, were recorded.

Special court stays proceedings in 2022 bank fraud case filed against Choksi
A SPECIAL court Friday stayed proceedings against diamond merchant Mehul Choksi and a co-accused in a bank fraud case, pending before the magistrate court. The special court said that the magistrate court had in April issued summons to the seven accused in the case, including Choksi, but the order does not reflect any opinion of the court. Lawyers for Choksi and co-accused, Aniyath Nair, had approached the special court against the magistrate court order. 'The reasons are necessary not only for the litigants before the court but also for the superior courts to know the thought process of the learned trial court. The court expects at least some brief outline of the reasons which leads the Trial Court to form an opinion to issue summons in the case. Therefore, in view of this prima facie error of being no reasons in support of the order of issuance of process, the further proceedings…. pending before the court….are hereby stayed qua the present applicant Nos.5 (Nair) and 2 (Choksi) till next date,' the special court said. The case relates to a complaint filed in 2022, alleging wrongful losses caused to a consortium of banks led by Canara Bank to the tune of Rs 55.27 crore. Choksi, two companies— Bezel Jewellery India Ltd, Gitanjali Gems, and four other persons were named as accused by the CBI. The CBI had alleged that loans granted by the banks for manufacturing and sales of gold and diamond studded jewellery, were diverted by the accused. The magistrate court had passed an order summoning the accused and issued a non-bailable warrant against Choksi, who is currently facing proceedings in Belgium, where he is detained on an extradition request by Indian authorities, for investigation of the Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank bank consortium fraud case. The lawyers for the accused, Rahul Agarwal and Jasmin Purani, had submitted that the magistrate court order taking cognizance of the chargesheet filed by the CBI was done 'mechanically', without giving any reasons. They also claimed that the order was passed in a 'lightning speed' on the same day when the chargesheet, running into thousands of pages, was put before the court, without perusal.

403 Indian star tortoises seized at Trichy airport
Trichy: The customs department has seized 403 live Indian star tortoises at Trichy international airport and handed them over to the forest department. Two men from Chennai attempted to smuggle the endangered species on a flight from Trichy to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and were detained. On Wednesday, officials intercepted two passengers for suspicious behaviour. On inspecting their bags, the tortoises were found. Forest officials said the tortoise is classified under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, providing maximum protection. The forest department has formed teams to investigate the seizure. A preliminary inquiry showed that the tortoises were brought from Chennai. "As the seizure involves a large number of tortoises, there is a possibility that they were brought from a captive breeding facility. Indian star tortoises can be found in reserve forest areas too," an official source told TOI. The two men were taken into custody for questioning. The tortoises are being released into their natural habitats in 10 different locations. Further investigation is on. Indian star tortoises are believed to have medicinal properties and are smuggled for illegal pet trade.
