A Mumbai court brought down the curtains on a controversial probe which spanned the country and multiple investigating agencies over nearly two decades.
On the night of September 29, 2008, the busy Bhiku Chowk in the town of Malegaon , in Maharashtra's Nashik district, was rocked by a blast that killed six and injured over a hundred. The blast fuelled fears of communal unrest given it occurred during the holy month of Ramzan and on the eve of the Hindu festival of Navratri.
The investigation and trial in the case took 17 years and ended on July 31 with a special National Investigation Agency ( NIA ) court acquitting all seven accused in the case. The case saw the arrest of a serving Army official on terror charges, different investigating agencies handling the probe, allegations of fabrication of evidence and witnesses retracting their testimonies.

Officials demolish wall denying Dalits access to government land in Tamil Nadu

KARUR: Two days after issuing eviction notice to the caste Hindu residents, revenue authorities amid tight police security on Saturday demolished a wall, allegedly constructed to restrict Dalits from accessing a parcel of government land, at Muthuladampatti in the district. Ahead of the wall's demolition, a contingent of around 200 personnel led by District SP K Josh Thangaiah took position at the spot. Noticing this, caste Hindu women in the locality surrounded the wall in a bid to prevent its demolition. Following this, the police held peace talks with members of both communities, who reside in separate settlements in Muthuladampatti, at the office of the Karur RDO. After officials assured that the concerns of both sides would be addressed, the wall was demolished, officials said. It may be noted that the Dalit residents alleged that the caste Hindus raised the wall on the parcel of poramboke land to restrict their access to it as well as the locality where the latter reside. Refuting the allegations, the caste Hindu residents claimed that the wall was constructed to protect the government land they have been 'occupying for decades from miscreants'. The 'untouchability wall' came under opposition from several quarters, including the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front, whose members on Friday threatened to demolish it themselves if official orders were not complied with.

Why are they stopping us? RG Kar victim's mom sustains 'head injury' during Nabanna march; senior cops say they're studying CCTV footage

KOLKATA: The RG Kar victim's parents, who participated in the organised on Saturday to mark the brutal campus crime's first anniversary, were taken to hospital after getting hurt in the standoff between cops and protesters. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The incident occurred on JL Nehru Road near Indian Museum around 2pm as cops tried to push back the crowd that marched towards Park Street, skipping Rani Rashmoni Avenue (which was earmarked as a protest venue) and resorted to a mild lathi-charge. The parents appeared to stumble in the melee. The victim's mother alleged she sustained a head injury in the police action and her shankha (the conch-shell bangle worn traditionally by married Hindu women) was broken. "Why are they stopping us? We just want to reach the state secretariat and seek justice for my daughter," she said, alleging that Kolkata Police had attacked her and her husband. "Several male and female officers assaulted me," she said. The couple, along with other protesters, subsequently marched towards the racecourse and sat in front of the barricade there. After some time, she complained she was not feeling well and was taken to hospital. A report from the hospital on Saturday evening said, "A 52-year-old lady presented to the emergency at 3.35pm with an alleged history of sustained injury with a bruise on her forehead. She was found to be alert, awake, and oriented on presentation. On examination by emergency consultants and by the neuro team, her vitals were found to be stable and she has been advised conservative treatment at home." Kolkata Police seniors said they were not aware of any injury to the victim's parents. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "We are taking the allegations seriously, though we have no clue as to what happened. So far, from the video footage that we have seen, we have found nothing that incriminates our personnel. But we are going to analyse each frame and are contacting the hospital. Action will be taken if anyone from Kolkata Police is found guilty. The same course of action will be followed if we find someone else is involved," said Joint CP (Headquarters) Meeraj Khalid. Video footage from TV showed there was a lot of pushing and shoving around the victim's parents. Recent entrant Kaustav Bagchi was seen shepherding them and shooing away TV cameras as the victim's mother tried to say something. Oppose those politicising parents' emotions: Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh blamed BJP seniors for "heckling and pushing the mother". "He (Bagchi) is seen pushing her mother away to show his own face on camera. Play this (the footage) in slow motion. I mentioned yesterday that this ugly drama and politics involving (her) parents would happen. Check it out today," Ghosh wrote on X. Later, at a press briefing, Ghosh said, "We have full respect for Tilottama's parents. But the BJP staged a drama by pushing them and clashing with cops. If Tilottama's parents were injured in any way, they have our full sympathy. However, we oppose those who have politicised their emotions." The Nabanna march was first called by leader of opposition in Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on July 2. He met the victim's parents a few days later, and they lent their support to the protest and said they would participate in it. Adhikari visited the hospital where the mother was taken for a check-up and treatment. At a press meet in the evening. Debashis Halder of West Bengal Junior Doctors' Forum said, "The leader of opposition had taken the responsibility of organising the march. We didn't see any neta getting injured. If kaku-kakima (the victim's parents) were in any of our protest march, we would have ensured their safety and ourselves got injured in their protection."

Dharmasthala: Two new informants claim to have witnessed burials

Two new informants have met officers of the special investigation team (SIT) probing the claims about mass burials of alleged victims of murder and sexual assault at Dharmasthala, alleging that they had seen a body being buried at a new location, police said. ASpecial Investigation Team (SIT) examining the site in the Dharmasthala mass burial case in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. (PTI PHOTO) Meanwhile, the SIT is continuing its search for human remains in the Dharmasthala mass burials case, with renewed efforts based on new tip-offs. A fresh excavation was carried out at the Bahubali hills on Saturday, which yielded no results, police officers said. The team dug a 20-feet by 20-feet trench to a depth of about 10 feet under a dry tree, but no bodies or remains were found. A detailed search operation about 15 feet away from the previously marked Point 16 also yielded no evidence. So far, the investigation has involved excavations at 16 different locations. Skeletal remains have been found at Point 6 and 10, while the search at Point 13 was suspended due to technical issues. 'The recent events in Dharmasthala are disappointing. There is a malicious campaign being run against Dharmasthala. Dharmasthala is a sacred and revered place, and we stand firmly with it,' said BJP MLA SR Vishwanath in Chikkaballapura district's Gauribidanur. 'Lord Manjunathaswamy of Dharmasthala is very powerful; people fear to act against him. Yet, false propaganda is being spread about the holy shrine. Therefore, on August 16, we will organise a massive 'Dharmasthala Chalo' rally from Yelahanka to Dharmasthala,' he said. 'Over 200 cars with saffron flags will participate under the slogan 'We are with Dharmasthala'. We will visit the deity and return. After this, similar campaigns will begin in other parts of the state,' Vishwanath added. On the anonymous informant's claim in the mass burial case, he remarked: 'If the person says he buried victims of rape and murder, then he himself should be hanged first. If he knew about such crimes and still buried the bodies, he too is guilty. He should be punished before anyone else.' 'Some people are trying to gain attention by spreading lies that hundreds of bodies were buried in Dharmasthala. This has hurt Hindus across the country. The anonymous person must be arrested,' demanded former deputy chief minister KS Eshwarappa in Shivamogga. 'There is a deliberate attempt to insult the Hindu community and create suspicion about a sacred place like Dharmasthala. The state government must immediately find out who is behind this. One person claims to have buried hundreds of bodies in 13 places. Could he have done it alone? Which anti-national and anti-religious group is backing him?' he asked. Eshwarappa further said: 'There is a conspiracy to spread false propaganda about Dharmasthala. The anonymous person has failed to show the burial sites. The state has already issued an order allowing the questioning and arrest of anyone connected to this matter.' 'There must be a thorough investigation,' he added.
