Experts are of the view that in a market like India, where consumers look for both value and price while making purchases, there is ample space for both natural and LGDs players to thrive.

Adding to their woes, the appetite for lab-grown diamonds is on the rise. What lies ahead for natural diamond players in the country? Will they successfully handle this pressure and emerge victorious?The demand for lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) is increasing with companies capitalising on the growing preference of consumers for a cheaper, environmentally friendly option. The affordability and ethical manufacture of lab-grown diamonds position them as an excellent alternative to natural diamonds , the sourcing of which has often been criticised as unethical, as it has been linked to unfair labour practices and can harm the environment. 'Today lab-grown diamonds are becoming very popular; they give you the same appeal as natural and can last very long. At the same time, they are much cheaper than natural diamonds,' says Saiyam Prem Mehra, Chairman, All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council.During his 2023 visit to the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a 7.5 carat eco-friendly lab-grown diamond to the then first lady, Jill Biden. The diamond was manufactured in a factory in Surat using renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. This illustrates the increasing popularity and acceptance of lab-grown diamonds, also known as synthetic diamonds, around the world.Darayus Mehta, Co-founder and Director of True Diamond , which was founded in 2023, says that although they started only a year ago, they have experienced remarkable growth, achieving a 5X increase in sales from the first month to December 2024. 'This rapid growth reflects the increasing acceptance of LGDs by today's consumers, especially those seeking affordable, sustainable luxury. Our primary customer base includes individuals aged 35-45, predominantly millennials who are progressive, independent, digitally savvy women and are conscious about sustainability and innovation in jewellery,' he says.The lab-grown diamond jewellery market in India was valued at $264.5 million in 2022. As per the estimates by investment promotion agency INDEXTb, lab-grown diamond jewellery sales will rise at a CAGR of 14.8% over the next 10 years, and the total market size will increase to $1,192.3 million by 2033, up from $299.9 million in 2023. A bright future certainly awaits LGDs!But will the popularity of LGDs take the sparkle away from natural diamonds?Currently, natural diamond players in the country are facing a double whammy—dwindling sales and increasing popularity of LGDs. Let the figures do the talking. According to the latest GJEPC report, India's export of cut & polished diamonds dropped by 18.25% in April-December 2024 to $9.75 billion from $11.93 billion during the same period in the previous year. During this period, imports also declined by 34.09%—from $1.49 billion in April-December 2023 to $0.98 billion in April-December 2024.India's diamond processing industry, which processes around 90% of the world's rough diamonds by volume, has seen a 24.5% drop in rough diamond imports—from $18.5 billion in FY22 to $14 billion in FY24, according to a recent GTRI report. In fact, India's overall diamond trade (exports + imports) has dipped by 22% year-on-year in FY24 due to the challenges of reduced demand in major export destinations and supply-side issues, such as G7 sanctions,' Govindu says, citing data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.Praveen Govindu, Partner, Deloitte India, attributes the decline to low demand in the global market, citing the report by GTRI. He says that in key markets, like the US, China, and Europe, demand has gone down due to economic uncertainty, inflation, and geopolitical tensions, leading to reduced consumer spending on luxury goods, including diamonds. 'In China, the diamond demand has plummeted by more than 50% over the past two years, but the consumption of lab-grown diamonds has surged, especially in the fashion jewellery and low-end engagement ring segments,' he adds.Even as lab-grown diamonds gain popularity in India and around the world, Bengaluru-based Debolina Biswas prefers natural diamonds, as she feels that the former lack value. 'I prefer buying (for myself and others) fine jewellery that can be worn more regularly, rather than storing it away in a bank locker and only taking it out on occasions. I'm not a fan of lab-grown diamonds simply because I feel they're not worth it. Diamonds (natural) have some sort of re-sale value,' she says.Consumers like Debolina give hope to natural diamond players in the country. Despite the declining numbers, they continue to be optimistic about the future and are looking forward to its growing demand.In 2024, India has grown to become the second-largest natural diamond jewellery market in the world, overtaking China, according to Richa Singh , Managing Director, India and the Middle East, Natural Diamond Council , who cites a recent De Beers Diamond Insight Report. 'We are second only to the US, and this growth would not have been possible without a growing demand, desire and adoption for diamonds from consumers. We saw 64 million visits to our website last year, showing that consumers are curious about natural diamonds and want to know more about the category.'India is expected to have 100 million additional consumers who can afford natural diamonds by 2030, according to De Beers data. 'With skilled artisans and their bespoke designs, India continues to be a key market for natural diamonds,' she adds.She says that the rarity of natural diamonds is what will keep the industry thriving, as diamond recovery has dropped by 30% since 2005 and no significant new diamond deposits have been discovered in recent times.'Natural diamonds are probably one of the oldest pieces of the earth's history one can hold in their hand. They are older than dinosaurs and even some of the stars in the sky. Each piece is unique and one of a kind, like a fingerprint. There is no other luxury product in the world that can be worn and enjoyed every day, passed down generations, have added memories and emotions, and still look just like it did on the day it was first purchased. They are finite in supply and getting rarer by the day, which lends them an inherent value,' she says.Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are mass-made replicas of each other, produced over a couple of weeks. They can be made on an unlimited scale, leading to the economics of demand and supply. As a result, the prices of lab-grown diamonds, in some cases, have dropped by as much as 83% between 2015 and 2024, she says. 'They (LGDs) are currently being used for industrial usage, in medical instruments, and in the fashion industry, but we believe they may not be a replacement for a billion-year-old heirloom,' she says.She adds that the need of the hour is to dispel myths, misconceptions and any misleading claims which create ambiguity and confusion for consumers. 'Consumers deserve transparency, and we are very happy that even the government has recognised the same. The recent diamond terminology guidelines proposed by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), something we have been working closely with the GJEPC on for the last 1.5 years, is a big step in this direction. It will offer clear language to differentiate between natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds, removing ambiguity and enabling consumers to make an informed decision,' she says.The CCPA proposed explicit labelling and certification of all diamonds. According to the proposed guidelines, diamonds should have specifications of their origin and production method, and terms like 'natural' or 'genuine' should not be used for lab-grown diamonds. The CCPA is set to release a more detailed and robust framework for the diamond industry.In November of last year, during the festive and wedding season, the Natural Diamond Council also came up with a campaign—'Make sure it's natural diamond'. The campaign aimed to highlight the rare and unique qualities of natural diamonds.In defence of natural diamonds, Varghese Alukka, MD of Jos Alukkas Group, asserts that (natural) diamonds have always been sought for their rarity, uniqueness and exclusivity, qualities that LGD doesn't offer. 'The overall emotional and sentimental value of diamonds as a category is missing in LGD and gives LGD a sense of wearing a fake. With the current trend at which LGD prices are dropping, it would never be an investment or have any resale value, making it just another stone,' he says.He acknowledges the importance of educating customers about the difference and reconnecting consumers with the genuine emotion of natural diamonds through unique and authentic digital narratives.In August, De Beers Group and Tanishq announced a collaboration to boost sales of natural diamonds. The collaboration involves extensive consumer outreach and communication about natural diamonds and diamond authenticity through Tanishq's retail staff, along with a 360-degree marketing campaign around it. Tanishq already uses De Beers' proprietary diamond verification technology to provide authenticity assurance of its products.Amit Pratihari, MD, De Beers India, says that in 2005, India's domestic diamond jewellery market accounted for just 2% of global consumption. By 2024, it has grown to 11%, making India the second-largest market for diamond jewellery in the world.He adds that the most significant surge in demand has been observed in the last couple of years, driven by increasing consumer affluence, evolving preferences, and greater awareness of natural diamonds' enduring value. The market's unprecedented expansion has created vast opportunities, engaging over 500,000 jewellers across the country and reshaping the landscape of the diamond industry in India.He says the recent dip in prices is a temporary phase, driven by short-term demand-supply dynamics, and this correction presents an opportunity to make natural diamonds more accessible and aspirational to a new generation of consumers, particularly young, globally- influenced buyers who seek authentic and meaningful jewellery.Given that diamond acquisition rates in India are still below those in mature markets like the US, Pratihari believes that there is significant potential for further growth in the natural diamond jewellery market in India. India will emerge as one of the leading diamond jewellery markets in the world.The overall diamond market in India is expected to reach a projected revenue of $4 billion by 2030 from $3.3 billion in 2024, as per Grand View Research.Experts are of the view that in a market like India, where consumers look for both value and price while making purchases, there is ample space for both natural and LGDs players to thrive. Saiyam Prem Mehra, Chairman, All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), says that many natural diamond players themselves are diversifying and opening branches of LGDs. 'If you see the top 10 diamond players, they have their other family members who are manufacturing and opening lab-grown outlets. It is a need of the era. If you are in the diamond industry, some part of it has to be lab-grown,' he says.In the future, he says, there will be a market and crowd for both kinds of diamonds. 'I do not think that they need to be classified and downgraded in a way where the natural diamonds have an upper hand and LGDs have a lower hand. If you buy from the right retail store, it will have the right resale value. LGDs are here to stay, and its future is getting very lucrative as we see more and more players coming into this segment,' he says.

Japanese developers bet big on Indian realty, lured by long-term growth promise
Bengaluru: Japanese investors and developers are placing large bets on India's real estate sector, prompted by a turnaround in the office, logistics and residential sectors, and convinced about the country's long-term economic growth prospects, analysts said. Post-pandemic, Japanese companies such as Sumitomo Realty & Development and Sumitomo Corp. (both Sumitomo Group firms), Mitsubishi Estate Co. Ltd, Mitsui Fudosan Co. Ltd, Mitsui O.S.K Lines Ltd and its subsidiary Daibiru Corp. and Marubeni Corp. among others have poured in millions into real estate projects and land parcels, primarily in Mumbai and National Capital Region (NCR). The deal momentum has gained further pace this year. It paid 39-40% premium over the bid price for both the land patches. Similarly, Sumitomo Corp. partnered with other companies this year for two projects—an office project in suburban Mumbai's Kalina, near BKC, and a luxury condominium project in Powai. Mitsubishi Estate is also an equity investor in the office project. 'India is expected to continue experiencing a demographic dividend, along with maintaining economic growth in the 6% range. In addition to its domestic demand-led economic structure, the country is increasingly recognized as a global business hub, particularly in the IT, financial and service sectors," Sumitomo Corp. said in a June statement, announcing its entry into the Mumbai office market. 'Based on the shared recognition that India remains a resilient growth market even amid today's increasingly uncertain global economy, we have decided to participate in this project," the firm added. The Japanese, however, are patient, equity investors betting on land and early-stage projects, and not shying away from taking development risks, experts said. 'Japanese capital is demonstrating rare conviction by backing early-stage development deals across India's core real estate segments—office, logistics and residential. This is not opportunistic investing, but a strategic bet on the country's long-term growth trajectory," said Nishant Kabra, head—land & capital markets (North and West) India, JLL, a property advisory. 'In the last five years, we've seen over $1.5 billion flow into development equity—a clear signal that Japan Inc. sees India not just as a market, but as a multi-decade growth partner," Kabra added. Japanese investors entered India's realty sector via direct investments, or alliances with local partners or other international investors. Last year, Daiburu, with a century-old experience in constructing office buildings in Japan, said it has made its first India real estate investment, pumping in $123 million in 'Atrium Place', a premium office project in Gurugram, being developed by Hines India and DLF Ltd. 'India is a key pillar of the MOL Group's (Mitsui O.S.K Lines) strategy to diversify its business portfolio by increasing non-shipping, stable revenue businesses that counter-balance the volatile shipping market," Daibiru said. Meanwhile, Japanese shipping giant MOL Group has been actively expanding its presence in India. 'The Japanese came to the party late, but they are very long-term investors. Unlike other international investors and funds, they are not married to returns. Japanese real estate investors have no pressure to sell or exit investments, don't operate in a fund structure and rarely manage third-party money, which makes them different from the others," said Shobhit Agarwal, managing director and chief executive officer at Anarock Capital. As the real estate sector continues to perform on all fronts, Japanese investors are also eyeing multi-city investments, diversifying their portfolios and doing follow-on funding. Earlier this year, Mitsubishi Estate also invested ₹560 crore in Birla Estates Pvt Ltd's residential project in Bengaluru, marking its maiden residential investment in India.

US-China trade talks in London to tackle fresh disputes, tariff truce

Since then, the US and China have exchanged angry words over advanced semiconductors that power artificial intelligence, rare earths that are vital to carmakers and other industries, and visas for Chinese students at American universities. President Donald Trump spoke at length with Chinese leader Xi Jinping by phone last Thursday in an attempt to put relations back on track. Trump announced on social media the next day that trade talks would be held on Monday in London. Technology is a major sticking point The latest frictions began just a day after the May 12 announcement of the Geneva agreement to pause tariffs for 90 days. The US Commerce Department issued guidance saying the use of Ascend AI chips from Huawei, a leading Chinese tech company, could violate US export controls. That's because the chips were likely developed with American technology despite restrictions on its export to China, the guidance said. The Chinese government wasn't pleased. One of its biggest beefs in recent years has been over US moves to limit the access of Chinese companies to technology, and in particular to equipment and processes needed to produce the most advanced semiconductors. "The Chinese side urges the US side to immediately correct its erroneous practices, a Commerce Ministry spokesperson said. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wasn't in Geneva but will join the talks in London. Analysts say that suggests at least a willingness on the US side to hear out China's concerns on export controls. China shows signs of easing up on rare earths One area where China holds the upper hand is in the mining and processing of rare earths. They are crucial for not only autos but also a range of other products from robots to military equipment. The Chinese government started requiring producers to obtain a license to export seven rare earth elements in April. Resulting shortages sent automakers worldwide into a tizzy. As stockpiles ran down, some worried they would have to halt production. Trump, without mentioning rare earths specifically, took to social media to attack China. The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US, Trump posted on May 30. The Chinese government indicated Saturday that it is addressing the concerns, which have come from European companies as well. A Commerce Ministry statement said it had granted some approvals and will continue to strengthen the approval of applications that comply with regulations. The scramble to resolve the rare earth issue shows that China has a strong card to play if it wants to strike back against tariffs or other measures. Plan to revoke student visas adds to tensions Student visas don't normally figure in trade talks, but a US announcement that it would begin revoking the visas of some Chinese students has emerged as another thorn in the relationship. China's Commerce Ministry raised the issue when asked last week about the accusation that it had violated the consensus reached in Geneva. It replied that the US had undermined the agreement by issuing export control guidelines for AI chips, stopping the sale of chip design software to China and saying it would revoke Chinese student visas. The United States has unilaterally provoked new economic and trade frictions, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a May 28 statement that the United States would aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields. More than 270,000 Chinese students studied in the US in the 2023-24 academic year.

Why do India's brightest find Harvard easier to enter than IITs?
It sounds different at first, how could one of the world's most prestigious Ivy League institutions be more accessible than India's own engineering strongholds? But for thousands of Indian students each year, that's the sobering reality. Harvard, with its global reputation and ultra-selective admissions, is seen as the pinnacle of academic achievement. Yet for many top Indian students, clearing the difficult Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) feels even harder. Statistically, they're right. While Harvard accepts about 3% to 5% of applicants, the top IITs admit less than 0.2%, a competition so fierce it borders on the impossible, according to The Economist. And the pressure isn't just numerical, it's cultural, psychological, and systemic. A test of endurance, not excellence India's entrance exams are unforgiving. Students begin preparing years in advance, often sacrificing adolescence for a shot at a seat in IITs or IIMs. In coaching towns like Kota, teenagers live regimented lives, measured not in experiences but in mock tests, cutoffs, and daily rankings. Rejection at home, recognition abroad This paradox plays out year after year: Students who are denied entry into India's top institutes end up accepted by Ivy League schools. It isn't that they're less intelligent; it's that India's system is designed as a sieve, not a searchlight. It filters ruthlessly, often overlooking creative thinkers, late bloomers, and non-conformists. Over 60% of the top 100 IIT rankers still leave India for graduate studies abroad. And now, many who fail to enter IITs at all are finding prestigious opportunities in the West, because, in many ways, they are finally being seen. A pipeline built on pressure According to The Economist, nearly one-third of all international students in the US are Indian. Many pursue STEM fields, drawn by flexible curricula, research opportunities, and comparatively less cut-throat undergraduate admissions. It's no surprise, then that even with volatile visa policies and occasional political hostility, like those during Donald Trump's presidency, Indian students continue to look West. Germany, Canada, and even the Netherlands are emerging as new favourites for Indian families wary of the IIT rat race. These countries offer not just quality education but a reprieve from the emotional toll exacted by India's hyper-competitive model. What does this say about India's system? That Harvard might be more accessible than an IIT is not a compliment to American universities; it's an indictment of India's own educational gatekeeping. Our brightest minds should not have to seek validation from abroad because their potential wasn't shaped into the narrow mold demanded by entrance tests. The question isn't whether Indian students are capable enough for the Ivy League. Clearly, they are. The question is: Why must they leave India to feel worthy? Until we reimagine our idea of merit—from a single number on an answer sheet to a fuller picture of capability and creativity, India will keep exporting talent it fails to nurture.
