Stand-alone Women's Australian Open golf tournament set for March 2026 in Adelaide
After sharing the tournament with the men in a mixed and alternate-tees format from 2022 to 2024, the women's event to be co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour will move from December to March 12-15 at Kooyonga Golf Club in Adelaide.
Golf Australia said Friday that Adelaide, the South Australian state capital, will host the tournament for the next three years.
While the 2026 LPGA Tour schedule has not been announced, the U.S.-based circuit typically plays co-sanctioned events in Asia in February and March. That could result in greater opportunities for international players to travel to Australia from the Asia region, including recently-crowned Women's PGA champion Minjee Lee, Australia's top women's player.
Last month, Golf Australia announced that Rory McIlroy will headline the men's Australian Open this year at Royal Melbourne from Dec. 4-7. This year's Masters champion is also contracted to play at nearby Kingston Heath, another Melbourne sandbelt course, in 2026.

Cardinals' Willson Contreras out of lineup with foot injury after being hit by pitch
ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras was not in the lineup Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies a day after he was hit in the foot by a pitch and broke his bat in frustration. Contreras, listed as day-to-day with a right foot contusion, was hit by Rockies starter Kyle Freeland's 0-2 sweeper in the fourth inning. He then slammed his bat into the dirt and snapped it over his knee. As he walked toward first base, the 33-year-old threw the two pieces of the broken bat toward the Cardinals' dugout. The Cardinals said X-rays did not reveal any structural damage in Contreras' foot. Contreras has been hit by a National League-leading 18 pitches this season, trailing only Randy Arozarena and Ty France. ___

Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon strikes tentative deal to buy the Portland Trail Blazers
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Paul Allen's estate has agreed to a tentative agreement to sell the Portland Trail Blazers to a group led by Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't yet made an official statement. Dundon intends to keep the Trail Blazers in Portland, the person said. The group includes Sheel Tyle, the co-founder of the investment firm Collective Global. The NBA Board of Governors must ratify any final purchase agreement. ESPN reported Wednesday that the deal was for $4 billion. Allen's estate announced in May that it had begun the process of selling the Trail Blazers. Allen, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, died in 2018 at age 65 from complications of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Since then, his sister, Jody Allen, has served as chair of the Trail Blazers and the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and is a trustee of the Paul G. Allen Trust.

Who got it right with Clemson football's preseason ranking: Coaches Poll or AP poll?
NEW: AP Poll Voters' Most Overrated Preseason College Football Teams since 2014 via @Brett_McMurphy😬 Monday's reveal of the preseason AP Top 25 poll produced a few different results from the previous week's US LBM Coaches Poll. While the team at the top remained the same in both polls with the Texas Longhorns at No. 1, there was a different team at No. 2 with Penn State replacing Ohio State for the runner-up spot in the AP poll. The Clemson Tigers got a better ranking from the various sportswriters and broadcasters who make up the AP's poll. Dabo Swinney's team was ranked No. 4 by the media, up two spots from where the 60-plus coaches in the US LBM poll had them. Which poll got it right? USA TODAY Sports college football analyst Blake Toppmeyer pondered that question with regard to eight top 25 teams and their discrepancies from one preseason poll to the other. For Clemson, Toppmeyer believes that AP voters got it right by slotting the Tigers at No. 4. "Clemson finished with four losses last season, but never mind that fading object in the rearview mirror, because Dabo Swinney retained a talented roster that's now more experienced. He even added some polish with a few transfers. Clemson touts the nation's best defensive line, along with arguably the nation's top quarterback, Cade Klubnik. Earlier this week, CBS Sports argued that even the Tigers' No. 4 ranking was low. There is, of course, a word of caution about getting too carried away by preseason rankings, regardless of your poll of choice. The 2024 Florida State Seminoles were the toast of the ACC entering last season after going 13-0 to win the league in 2023, only to flop right out of the gate after a preseason top 10 ranking to finish 2-10. It's not just Mike Norvell's 2024 'Noles, either. USC, Oklahoma, Auburn and Texas A&M are just a few of the more frequent disappointments from the past 10 years of preseason poll rankings, as On3's Brett McMurphy recently posited. Twice in the past four years, Clemson's own preseason rankings have yielded some fairly disappointing results by season's end. The Tigers were ranked No. 9 entering the 2023 season but stumbled in a rare four-loss season to No. 20 in the final Coaches Poll. After checking in at No. 2 entering 2021, Clemson landed at No. 16 in the final poll. Conversely, it was 10 years ago this season when the Tigers ranked outside the preseason top 10, only to finish as runner-up to Alabama after falling just one or two plays short against Nick Saban's 2015 Crimson Tide in the national championship game in Glendale, Arizona. When it comes to preseason polls, things are seldom an exact science.
