'You guys made it special.' Fever players not surprised Indy showed WNBA fans so much love during All-Star Weekend

INDIANAPOLIS – The Boston family group chat has been buzzing the past few days.
Cleone and Algernon Boston — parents of Indiana Fever forward and WNBA All-Star Aliyah Boston — were in town for this weekend's WNBA All-Star Game. And every time Cleone saw a massive photo, advertisement or any sort of promotional material involving her daughter, she made sure to send it to the family group chat.
"They loved it," Aliyah smiled. "(And) it was great having them in town for a little bit."
The past week has showcased what Fever players and Indiana natives have long known: This state loves its basketball and when it comes to hosting massive sporting events, very few can do it better.
The scene Saturday night was incredible with Gainbridge Fieldhouse packed to the rafters and the sold-out crowd of 16,988 fully engaged, maintaining its energy from start to finish of Team Caitlin Clark's 119-95 loss to Team Napheesa Collier.
"That was special. That was really, really special," said Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell, who led Team Clark with 20 points. "You guys made it special. I think everybody played a big part in making this weekend what it was supposed to be. Shout out to the city of Indianapolis for putting on a great show for everybody and hopefully the players from the W, from the other teams, enjoyed themselves."
"Honestly, I'm not surprised," Boston added. "Anything that has to do with basketball and sports in general, Indy shows out and they get loud. They filled that arena tonight and let those athletes know they really support them."
To Boston's point, it wasn't just the Fever players who felt the love. New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu drew raucous ovations every time she was shown during Friday's skills competition, and there were roars from the crowd with the introduction of each all-star on Saturday — including Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese, who got some of the loudest cheers of the night.
"The weekend has been absolutely incredible," team captain and Fever guard Caitlin Clark said. "I hope every player in this league, whether you're participating in the game tonight or were in the 3-point competition and skills competition or were just here to enjoy All-Star weekend, I hope they felt the same and felt the love from the city."
The support shown this weekend in Indianapolis has become the standard for Fever fans and increasingly across the league.
Asked if she's used to the new standard the league has established in terms of support and attendance, Mitchell replied simply: No.
"And here's why, I see a new celebrity that day I watched on TV growing up at the game every day now. So I'm just like, what is happening?" she continued. "People want to see what women's basketball looks like at the highest level and we as the players want to provide a good product. And the idea is that you want people to keep packing this place in — but I'll never get used to it. Ever."

Brittney Griner leads way as Dream hand Lynx their first home loss of the season, spoil Napheesa Collier's 32-point night

The Minnesota Lynx are perfect at home no more. Brittney Griner led the Atlanta Dream to a 90-86 win over the Lynx on Sunday to hand Minnesota its first home loss of the season. The Lynx had previously won 14 straight at home to start the 2025 campaign. The Dream had to fend off a stat-stuffing 32-point effort from Napheesa Collier and a furious late comeback effort from the Lynx to secure the win. But they did both to improve to 15-10 and keep pressure in the East on the New York Liberty (17-7), whose first-place lead over the Dream now stands at 2.5 games. The Lynx still maintain the WNBA's best record with the loss that dropped them to 22-5 and 14-1 at home. Atlanta seized early control of the game and raced out to a 46-32 lead. Griner repeatedly outmatched her opponents in the paint as Atlanta built the lead en route to 22 points, four rebounds and three assists. She scored 17 of her 22 points before halftime and finished the night shooting 8 of 13 (61.5%) from the field. The second half was a different story. Collier, who scored 11 points in the first half, took the game over after the break. Minnesota cut its 14-point halftime deficit to 60-54 by the end of the third quarter, and Collier kept the pressure on en route to 32 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, four steals and two blocks. She one-upped Griner's offensive efficiency with a 14-of-18 (77.8%) effort from the floor, including a jumper that cut Atlanta's lead to 86-89 with 11.1 seconds remaining. But Jordin Canada hit a free throw that pushed Atlanta's lead back to two possessions at 90-86 with 7 seconds remaining, and the Dream ran out of time and chances to complete the comeback. With the win, the Dream cap a six-game road trip with a 3-3 record. They'll return to Atlanta to face the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday in their first home game since July 7. They'll finish the season with a back-loaded slate of home games that features 11 of their last 19 games in Atlanta, including seven of their last nine. The Lynx will have a chance to start a new home-winning streak on Wednesday in a showdown with the Liberty featuring the two best teams in the league. The Liberty might play that game without All-Star Breanna Stewart, who's dealing with a leg injury but will reportedly travel with the team.

Dream end Lynx's 14-game home winning streak with 90-86 win, Griner scores season-high 22

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Brittney Griner scored a season-high 22 points and the hot-shooting Atlanta Dream handed the Minnesota Lynx their first loss in 15 home games this season 90-86 on Sunday night. The Lynx trailed 83-70 with three minutes to go but pulled within three on Napheesa Collier's basket with 11.3 seconds left. Jordin Canada's free throw at 7 seconds iced it. Atlanta made its first six shots of the fourth quarter before a block by Collier and then made three more in a row. Collier had 13 points in the final period. Canada had 18 points for the Dream (15-10) and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Allisha Gray both added 12. Collier scored 32 points on 14-of-18 shooting to go with eight rebounds, seven assists, four steals and two blocks to lead the Lynx (22-5). Alanna Smith added 12 points, Courtney Williams 11 and Natisha Hiedeman 10. The Lynx franchise-record home winning streak was the fourth-longest in WNBA history. Atlanta was 5-of-20 shooting in the third quarter when Minnesota cut a 14-point halftime deficit to as little as three. But in the other three quarters the Dream shot 29 of 45 (71%). The Lynx shot 56% but after Collier it was 48%. They were also outscored by nine at the foul line. The Lynx end a five-game homestand on Wednesday when the defending champion New York Liberty visit for the first meeting of the season between the two WNBA finalist from last season. ___ AP WNBA:
