Yahoo16-05-2025

After a week of voting, Beech High School's Braden Cole has emerged as The Tennessean Student of the Week honoring seniors.
Cole is described as an exceptional young man and student. He is said to be one of the most natural born leaders that staff has had come through Beech High School.
'He is always quick to take on any responsibility asked of him and executes that responsibility with perfection,' said Beech High School Counselor Christy M. Croft.
Besides being student body president, Cole was also chosen as a Beech Patrol leader. In this role, he helps cultivate school spirit among the students, Croft noted, adding that he attended sporting events and led the student section to cheer on the teams.
Cole has also been an invaluable DECA member and competed at the state level, where he won all three years and earned a bid to Nationals, she said.
'He has been an integral part of our Shackle Island community and will be greatly missed when he graduates,' Croft added.
As part of The Tennessean Student of the Week series, we ask teachers, staff and administrators to send in nominations, and then we let you, the reader, decide who wins by casting votes in our online poll.
We asked schools from across Middle Tennessee to send us their best seniors this week.
Next week, we plan to end the series for the 2024-25 school year by honoring the best orators. So, be ready to cast those votes in our final poll when it goes live at 5 a.m. Monday on Tennessean.com.
As always, we believe every student who gets nominated for the Student of the Week feature is a winner. So here's a little bit about our other nominees from this week, as written by those who nominated them:
Dunn comes to school each day with a positive attitude towards students and staff. He is the type of student that, if all were as good as he is, would put all principals out of business because he is that outstanding! Dunn is the most respectful student I have ever encountered. A truly Outstanding Senior!
Gomez Ceba exemplifies academic excellence as the valedictorian and a distinguished Bell Tower Scholar. Beyond her achievements, she consistently supports her classmates and fosters a positive, peaceful environment throughout the school. Her leadership, kindness, and dedication make her an outstanding choice for this honor.
Fuller is a well-rounded student who shines both in and out of the classroom through his involvement in football, e-sports, and yearbook. He consistently stays on top of his assignments and demonstrates strong responsibility and dedication. With his infectious school spirit and positive attitude, Cleveland is truly a joy to work with and a perfect choice for this honor.
Sims is the definition of a gentle giant — bringing intensity and focus to the football field while remaining quiet and respectful in the building. He maintains straight A grades and leads by example, consistently motivating both his teammates and fellow seniors. His balance of strength, humility, and academic excellence makes him an outstanding choice for this honor.

East Baton Rouge superintendent proposes new start times for certain schools

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Superintendent LaMont Cole is asking the East Baton Rouge school board to consider changing start and end times for six schools in the Capitol and Glen Oaks areas to help boost student well-being and improve transportation times. Cole outlined the proposed changes in a memo to the school board. He said the realignment would reduce the number of bus riders waiting in the early dark hours and support better sleep habits for teens. If approved, the new schedule will take effect in the 2025–2026 school year at the following schools: Melrose Elementary. Capitol Elementary. Capitol High. Merrydale Elementary. Glen Oaks Park Elementary. Glen Oaks High. Under the proposed plan, elementary schools would run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., and secondary schools would shift from 8:50 a.m. to 4:05 p.m. The change would standardize the length of the school day to 435 minutes for both levels, according to the memo. Currently, secondary schools start as early as 7:10 a.m., which is earlier than the state's already early average of 7:45 a.m. The memo said Louisiana is one of only four states that start secondary schools this early. According to Cole, the later times are expected to lead to: Reduced risks of obesity, diabetes, and car accidents. Fewer mental health concerns, like anxiety and depression. Improved attendance, focus, and academic outcomes. To measure the success of the change, the district will monitor attendance data, disciplinary records, academic performance and routing and transport times. The change is part of a broader realignment plan and will not affect all schools. Only the six named schools in the Capitol and Glen Oaks areas will see schedule changes. Staff schedules will also be adjusted accordingly. Principals will have flexibility in setting start and end times for staff as long as they meet district workday requirements. The school board meets at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. For more information or to review the full plan, visit the East Baton Rouge Parish School System website. Whitmer Slams Trump for Plan to Pardon Kidnap Plotters Who Wanted to ‘Hog-tie' Her

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has condemned a move by Donald Trump to consider pardoning crazed extremists who plotted to kidnap her and 'hog tie' her. The Democrat spoke out after Trump said Wednesday that the trial 'looked to me like somewhat of a railroad job,' and he would look into using his pardon power. The convicts include two who are considered so dangerous by the Bureau of Prisons that they are being held in the federal supermax in Colorado along with convicts including the Mexican drug lord El Chapo and the al Qaeda shoe bomber Richard Reid. Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr., who were angry at Whitmer's Covid-19 policies in 2020, were convicted in August 2022. Croft, who also faced weapons charges, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, while Fox was given a 16-year sentence. They were part of an elaborate plot to separate Whitmer from her security detail—by force if necessary—to take her captive. Fox was caught on tape telling his co-conspirators, 'Grab the f---in' governor. Just grab the b---h. I want to have the governor hog-tied, laid out on a table, while we all pose around like we just made the world's biggest goddamn drug bust, bro.' Croft was also recorded saying he had been given permission to kill by God. They were part of a radicalized gang which plotted the kidnapping; nine were either convicted after trial or pleaded guilty before trial to charges including plotting to kidnap and plotting to use weapons of mass destruction. Five more were acquitted, one of whom was taped by the FBI saying of Whitmer, 'cap her.' 'I'm very disappointed that they are even considering it, frankly,' Whitmer told NBC affiliate News 8 of Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo on Thursday. 'When the president was shot at in Pennsylvania, I was one of the first people on either side of the aisle to condemn it,' she said. 'We have to condemn political violence, no matter who it comes from, no matter who it is aimed at. It does a disservice to everyone if we do anything short of that.' Whitmer added: 'I will be making my thoughts known to the White House and I hope they take it into consideration.' The vile plot to kidnap Whitmer has become an obsession on the fringes of the right with claims that FBI agents provocateur were actually behind it and that some of the plotters were railroaded into pleading guilty. Croft and Fox's bid to be freed has already failed when they appealed their conviction earlier this year and were turned down by a federal appeals court. 'Between Defendants' extremist group affiliations, threatening social media posts, and numerous self-incriminating private communications, it is evident that Defendants were ready and willing to commit these crimes long before being introduced to any government informants,' the court wrote then. Trump's relationship with Whitmer has also proved variable. In 2020, he fueled local rage about lockdowns to reduce the spread of Covid by calling Whitmer 'that woman from Michigan,' and Tweeting, 'Liberate Michigan.' But Whitmer has now appeared twice in public with Trump, the first time to her embarrassment when she was photographed in April the Oval Office at what she had thought would be a private meeting. The second was when she appeared on stage with him later in April in Warren, MI, where he praised her for helping save jobs at Selfridge Air National Guard base there. A few weeks later, Trump made the trip out there, and praised Whitmer during his speech. 'So I want to thank Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for bringing [Selfridge] to our attention,' he said. 'You know, I'm not supposed to do that. She's a Democrat. They say, 'Don't do that, don't have her here.' I said, 'No, she's going to be here.' She's done a very good job, frankly.'

Lakeland police, volunteer groups working to find man who went missing May 13

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — Lakeland police and a group of volunteers are working to find a man who has been missing for weeks. Frederick Blackwelder, 71, spent most of his time in south Lakeland, where he and other family members live, according to Lakeland Police. '[He] just visits family and attends church so that's the area that he usually stays in,' said Officer Stephanie Kerr, public information officer at Lakeland Police Department. In the wee hours of May 13, police said, Blackwelder was driving toward Bartow on 98 South at 540A. It was the last time his vehicle, a 2006 white Toyota Scion TC with Florida tag number 665-3VY, was seen. 'If the public could just review their videos and see if it's possible that he had been in the area, it would certainly help us in locating him,' Kerr said. Pinellas man blames error on state report for uptick in car insurance rates Volunteer search and recovery group, We Are The Essentials, is also helping to locate him in coordination with the police department. 'These areas in yellow are areas that we've searched,' said Shelley Croft, private investigator and volunteer with We Are The Essentials, pointing to a map app on her phone. Croft said the group uses a mapping system to track where they've gone and where they still need to go, starting at the missing person's last known location. 'We don't just go rogue and go out and start searching because you have to have a starting point,' said Croft. This weekend, We Are The Essentials partnered with Sunshine State Sonar to search 30 bodies of water but found no sign of Blackwelder. 'Everybody deserves that closure,' Croft said. 'The unknown is heartbreaking and devastating for families when they don't know where their loved one is.' Police said Blackwelder was reported missing May 24th after his family members returned from vacation and could not locate him. 'Somebody who is very close to him reported him missing, cares for him and loves him and would like to see him found,' Kerr said. She said no foul play is suspected at this time. Anyone with information and/or videos of Blackwelder's vehicle is urged to contact the Lakeland Police Department at 863-834-6966. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
