Mookie Betts gets brutally honest about his ugly 2025: ‘This season's over'

New York Post21 hours ago
Mookie Betts, a superstar having a very un-superstar-like season, has taken a new approach to this forgettable year.
'This season's over,' Betts said Friday, according to The Athletic. 'My season's kind of over. We're going to have to chalk that up for not a great season.'
It's a way of framing his frustration and starting over. Betts knows he's not going to have his typical numbers, not when he is sporting a .688 OPS in August, with just 12 homers and 51 RBIs. He's never finished a season with an OPS less than .803 and hit a career-high 39 home runs just two seasons ago.

'But I can go out and help the boys win every night, do something, get an RBI, make a play, do something that — I'm going to have to shift my focus there,' the 32-year-old Betts said. 'Obviously everyone wants to have great seasons, but it's a lot easier when you just don't worry about the season. You just worry about game to game. I'll take this perspective for the rest of my career.'
Manager Dave Roberts has remained in Betts' corner, hitting him near the top of the order despite his offensive woes.

An eight-time All-Star and Silver Slugger winner a year ago, Betts did have a strong game Friday night, going deep for the first time since July 5 in a 5-1 win over the AL East-leading Blue Jays.
His three RBIs were his most since April 30.

Maybe that can get him going — he has hit safely in three consecutive games.
Baby steps for the former MVP. The Dodgers could certainly use a vintage Betts, with the Padres only three games behind them in the NL West.

Minnesota Lynx to face New York Liberty in 3 straight games in scheduling quirk

NEW YORK (AP) — The Minnesota Lynx have three straight games against the New York Liberty due to a scheduling quirk. A rematch of last season's WNBA Finals feels in some ways like a playoff series for the Lynx, who visit the Liberty on Sunday before traveling home. The team doesn't play again until hosting New York on Saturday. The Lynx then return back to Barclays Center to face the Liberty on Aug. 19, playing three times in nine days. 'It's exhausting talking about the scheduling, I have nothing to say,' Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said. New York doesn't have the same luxury, heading out west for back-to-back games against Los Angeles and Las Vegas on Tuesday and Wednesday before traveling to play Minnesota for the home and home set. 'It would have been nice to have it be spread out a little bit,' New York coach Sandy Brondello said. 'It's a series with a few games extra for us, not for them.' A number of factors go into scheduling such as arena availability. The two teams will have played four times over a three-week stretch with Minnesota winning the first matchup at home on July 30. New York star Breanna Stewart will most likely miss all of the games while recovering from a bone bruise in her right knee. Minnesota's Napheesa Collier, who is a front-runner for the MVP this season, was out for Sunday's matchup while dealing with a sprained right ankle. She might miss the next two meetings as well as she recovers. 'You never know what's going to happen with teams and like the league didn't know that Phee and I were both going to be out,' Stewart said. 'You want to see everybody full throttle. That's the first game of the seasons or the second or the third, not August.' ___

Shohei Ohtani hits 40th home run of season in Dodgers' game against Blue Jays

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani hit his 40th home run of the season Saturday night in the fifth inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers' 9-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. The two-way Japanese star reached 40 homes for the fourth time in his career, after winning MVP awards in each of the previous three years he did it. Last year, Ohtani hit a career-high 54 home runs in winning the National League MVP in his first year with the Dodgers. On Saturday, Ohtani hit a solo shot 417 feet to center off starter Chris Bassitt to give the Dodgers a three-run lead. 'That was one of those swings where he was behind the ball,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'He stayed into the ground. I know he and the hitting guys have been working on some things mechanically. That was as good of a swing as you're going to see.' With 45 regular-season games left, Roberts was asked if he thought Ohtani could reach 55. 'It wouldn't surprise me,' Roberts said. 'Guys like Shohei always look for something to motivate them. He likes round numbers. I know 50 is on his radar. We'll see how it goes.' Ohtani was not made available to the media. In 2021, Ohtani hit 46 home runs with the Los Angeles Angels and earned his first MVP. He homered 44 times in 2023 as well.

Mets Legend Named Option for Yankees to Replace Aaron Boone

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees earned a much-needed win against the Houston Astros on Saturday as they cling to the last remaining playoff spot in the American League. But the victory likely means more than just another notch in the wins column. The Yankees and Astros have become heated rivals in recent seasons as the two have battled for league supremacy. After suffering American League Championship Series losses at the hands of the Astros twice in the last six seasons, the Yankees would love to win their latest regular season series. But if the Yankees aren't able to right their ship and do find themselves on the outside looking in come playoff time, the team could replace manager Aaron Boone with Carlos Beltran, a potential Hall of Famer who is associated with both the Yankees and Astros as well as the New York Mets. "The pressure on manager Aaron Boone is palpable, and rumors of a change in leadership are gaining momentum," Adda E Lavalle Lara wrote for Al Bat. "Known for his stint as a player with the Yankees, Beltran almost became the manager of the New York Mets before getting caught up in the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal. If the Yankees are willing to forgive and forget, his experience as a player could be invaluable to the team." (Photo by) More Chambers/Getty Beltran played with the Yankees for three seasons in his storied career, which ended with an Astros stint that was tainted by the use of a video feed from center field to decode opponents' signs. Despite that scandal, Beltran was just shy of the necessary votes to earn Baseball Hall of Fame induction in his third year on the ballot, and he appears set to make it in next year. Beltran would surely be pictured with a New York Mets hat on his Hall of Fame plaque, as he played seven seasons with the Mets and earned five All-Star nods, three Gold Glove Awards and two Silver Slugger Awards in that time. If the Yankees were to assess potential options to replace Boone, Beltran could be at the top of the list despite his history with two of the team's most hated rivals.
