Lin-Manuel Miranda Explained Why He Really Wanted To Play A Munchkin In "Wicked," And The Reason He Wasn't Cast

Yahoo05-02-2025
Wicked has become a worldwide phenomenon, and not only is it the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2024, but it's also now nominated for 10 Academy Awards.
Of course, it was based on the beloved hit Broadway musical, so the odds were that the movie would be a surefire HIT. The movie was also in development for years and had several stars attached to it, including Lady Gaga, who was reportedly going to play Elphaba in a 2016 version of the movie that was going to be directed by Stephen Daldry. There were also a lot of actors who auditioned or wanted to be in the film.
One of those people who wanted to be in the film was Lin-Manuel Miranda, who tweeted (when it was announced that Daldry would be directing the movie) that he wanted to play the role of the Munchkin who yells, "Is it true you were her Friend?!":
In 2020, Stephen ended up leaving Wicked because of scheduling conflicts, and Jon M. Chu would eventually come on board to direct.
Previously, Jon had directed the 2021 film adaption of Lin-Manuel's In the Heights. And according to him, Lin-Manuel called him several times to be cast in Wicked.
Well, Lin-Manuel was a guest last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote him starring in the Broadway play All In: Comedy About Love. Toward the end of the interview, Stephen asked why he wasn't in Wicked.
According to Lin-Manuel, the story of him trying to be cast in Wicked has been "blown way out of proportion." He said he did call Jon after he found out he would be directing and told him that if there were any role for him, he would be interested. But he also told him he really wanted the role of the Munchkin, who asks Glinda, "Is it true you were her friend?!"
Lin-Manuel went on to explain why he wanted that role so badly, saying, "Because man, I don't know if you've seen a live production of Wicked, but sometimes they really put some sauce on the ball when they deliver that line."
He also said that the actor who ultimately got the role did a great job at delivering the line earnestly because he would have delivered it like Regina George in Mean Girls.
Ultimately, Lin-Manuel admitted that if he had been cast, it would have been distracting.

A Rom-Com Born in Britain and Set in New York Is Coming to Broadway

A meet-cute musical about two 20-somethings on their way to a wedding (his dad is marrying her sister — it's complicated) will add some song-and-dance to a play-heavy season on Broadway this fall. 'Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)' is small — just the pair of performers — and, according to reviews of several prior stagings, charming. The show began its life in 2019 with a different title — 'The Season' — and a couple of runs in England — at the New Wolsey Theater in Ipswich and at Royal & Derngate in Northampton. A new, retitled version arrived at the Kiln Theater in London in 2023, and then transferred to the West End the next year; earlier this year, it ran at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass. The Broadway production is scheduled to begin previews on Nov. 1 and to open Nov. 20 at the Longacre Theater. It will star Sam Tutty, who won an Olivier Award for playing the title role in the London production of 'Dear Evan Hansen,' and Christiani Pitts, who last starred on Broadway in an ill-fated musical adaptation of 'King Kong.' Tutty has been with the production since its London run; Pitts joined in Cambridge. The show is about a sweet young English cinema usher who flies to New York to attend the second wedding of his estranged father; the bride asks her sister, an American barista, wry by comparison, to pick him up. The two of them spend two days exploring New York, and getting to know each other, before the ceremony. In Britain, The Telegraph called it 'a total charmer,' while The Independent said the show 'captures all the messiness of being in your twenties without a plan, showing how big cities can crush anyone naïve enough to see them as a pretty backdrop to their dreams.' The show's book and music are by Jim Barne and Kit Buchan and it's directed and choreographed by Tim Jackson. The producers are Kevin McCollum, Tim Johanson, Glass Half Full Productions and Jamie Wilson Productions.

The Pillows, Track Suits and Letters That Fans Send to Broadway Stars

A customized black track suit. Papier-mâché 'Little Shop of Horrors' fly traps. Friendship bracelets in a range of colors and designs. The fan mail landscape in New York theater is alive and well. Across the theater district, stage managers and theater employees collect fan art, stuffed animals and other gifts of appreciation that are sent to stars, ferrying the items to mailboxes and dressing rooms. 'It's so cool that people still send me things after all these years,' said Joey Fatone, the former 'N Sync singer who recently ended his run in the Broadway musical '& Juliet.' He estimated that each week he received about a dozen handwritten letters and several packages, including one containing a track suit emblazoned with '& Joeyet,' a play on his name and the jukebox musical's. 'I read as much as I can, but there's so much,' said Fatone, 48. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

‘Jesus Christ Superstar' Soars On Streaming

In between her two Wicked films, Cynthia Erivo has not been taking time off. Just a few months ago, she released her new album I Forgive You, and more recently, she starred in a three-day revival of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. Held at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA, the production was heralded as a spectacular retelling of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-penned show. Even though the number of performances and even the thousands of people who witnessed the performances of fellow stars like Adam Lambert and John Stamos (who subbed in for Josh Gad for one night) was extremely limited, the event has led to massive upticks in consumption of the album – all of them, actually. Jesus Christ Superstar Sees a 288% Streaming Spike Between August 1 and 4, the original 1970 concept album, which started it all for Jesus Christ Superstar, experienced a 288% increase in streams in the United States. It racked up 430,000 plays, according to Billboard. That sum is compared to the weekend before the show lit up the famed venue – July 25-28. 1996 London Cast Recording Leads with 583% Jump The 1996 London cast recording enjoyed the most dramatic jump of all versions of Jesus Christ Superstar. Streams of that set rose 583% during the same period, as it collected more than 235,000 plays in only a few days. NBC Live Musical Album NBC adapted Jesus Christ Superstar a few years back as part of its series of live musicals, and the album, which features contributions from stars like Sara Bareilles and John Legend, also grew, thanks to the Hollywood Bowl production. From August 1 to 4, that project saw its tracks played 92,000 times – up 192% weekend-over-weekend. 1973 Film Soundtrack Streams Climb In 1973, a movie was made of Jesus Christ Superstar, and, unsurprisingly, many fans of the musical, as well as those who simply wanted to be a part of the action, turned to the soundtrack on streaming sites. That album's stream count rose to 155,000, up 151% from one weekend to the next. Jesus Christ Superstar Throughout the Decades The original Jesus Christ Superstar concept album became a shocking breakout success in the early '70s. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, emerging as a relatively uncommon success from the musical theater world – even if the title hadn't yet made it to the big stage on either side of the Atlantic. Several other recordings have also landed on the same tally throughout the years, but none have come close to matching the power of the first.
