Grammy-winning megastar's horror debut branded 'year's worst movie'

The horror movie debut of musician and actor The Weeknd has emerged to disappointing returns, taking only $3.3million (£2.4m) in its opening, uh, weeknd in the States.
Four-time Grammy Award-winning musician, producer and actor The Weeknd – real name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye – stars as a fictionalised version of himself in the psychological thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow.
Directed by Trey Edward Shults, it follows the star as he teeters on the brink of a mental breakdown, spurred on by his interactions with a mysterious fan, played by Jenna Ortega.
The film, which was co-written by The Weeknd and also stars Barry Keoghan, serves as a companion piece to his 2025 album of the same name.
But while the album debuted to strong word of mouth and even better sales, topping the charts in 16 countries, the film hasn't had the same kind of traction.
Released in the United States on May 16, it did so to poor reviews and disappointing ticket sales, finishing in sixth place, behind the Final Destination sequel, Sinners and A Minecraft Movie.
Since its release, the film has racked up a paltry 13% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with The Daily Beast's Nick Schager describing it as an 'ego-stroke of monumental hubris that instantly assumes pole position in the race for year's worst movie.'
Ouch.
Meanwhile, Inverse described it as 'simply a slog,' while SlashFilm called it 'just awful.'
Audiences who had seen the film took to X to share their thoughts, with many describing it as a 'vanity project' and a waste of the talents of all involved.
'hurry up tomorrow movie was so egregiously bad that at one point all 6 people in the theater just started laughing at how stupid it was,' said 444ybwmoi.
'Weeknd vanity project wastes the talent in front of, and behind, the camera,' wrote Twit4java.
'anyway so i watched Hurry Up Tomorrow and what kind of mess what that,' said Rydxr.
However, with a 70% Popcornmeter score from fans on Rotten Tomatoes, opinion is far from unified.
'Unpopular opinion, Abel acting as The Weeknd is good and not the problem with Hurry Up Tomorrow,' said JoeDorvil.
'And I hope Abel Tesfaye knows how I'm absolutely proud of him for making his way up to the top for making an outstanding performance on Hurry Up Tomorrow alongside with Jenna Ortega, Barry Keoghan,' agreed XOOFLIFE.
'hurry up tomorrow was a love letter for the FANS. if you're not XO, you're simply not going to get it. abel poured his heart and soul into this movie and his passion for this project is so evident. i thoroughly enjoyed it. if you didn't, you didn't understand. your loss,' said whydtry.
The film was inspired by a 2022 incident in which he took to the stage in front of 70,000 film – only to learn that he'd lost his voice.
'I saw my doctor, and he said, 'There's nothing wrong with you — your [vocal cords] are inflamed, but nothing out of the ordinary,' he told Variety of his sudden silence. More Trending
'And that's when we came to the realization that it was all up here.
'My body, and specifically my voice, had never failed me before. I'd been on stage with a high fever, completely sick; I'd been on stage in the middle of a breakup or a death in the family; and I'd lost my voice during a performance. But I was always able to fight through it… I was defeated on the world stage with everyone watching,' the musician revealed.
Inspired by this existential crisis, he went on to create Hurry Up Tomorrow, in an attempt to creatively purge his demons, laying them out for all to see… for better and worse.

Aberdeen winger Shayden Morris has revealed he studies footage of an England international and Premier League legend in a bid to further improve his game. Morris played a pivotal role in the Dons' Scottish Cup final win against Celtic as the Reds won the trophy for the first time since 1990. The 23-year-old made an explosive impact off the bench when his cross was parried into his own net by Celtic keeper Kasper Schmeichel. In a memorable season, Scottish Cup-winning hero Morris also scooped the Aberdeen Player of the Year award – voted for by supporters. However, he is constantly striving to improve his performances and watches footage of Raheem Sterling for inspiration before matches. Sterling, 30, won four Premier League titles, an FA Cup and five League Cups with Manchester City. Currently at Chelsea, the winger – capped 82 times by England – has scored 174 career goals and spent last season on loan at Arsenal. Morris said: 'I still watch clips of Raheem Sterling from his Manchester City days to study his movement. 'Of course, at Arsenal he hasn't been the same as he was before at City, but it's him as a person I look up to. 'I want to improve so even before games sometimes I'll study Sterling online. 'He has pace, but he's also got the skill to make the most of that, so I'm trying to add stuff that he did. 'I like to think I'm slowly getting better at that so I can help the team as much as possible.' Signed from Fleetwood Town in summer 2022, Morris endured a frustrating first two seasons at Pittodrie due to injury. In his debut season, the winger suffered a hamstring tear which ruled him out for four months. There was a further injury setback in the 2023-24 season when Morris was ruled out for three months with another hamstring injury which required surgery. However, under manager Jimmy Thelin, the wing star has delivered a breakout season with five goals and 13 assists. In his constant pursuit of improvement, Morris has also sought advice from former Scotland international winger Robert Snodgrass. Former Leeds United, Aston Villa, West Ham and Norwich City star Snodgrass is now an agent. Capped 28 times, Snodgrass is with the same agency as Morris' representative. Morris hopes guidance from Snodgrass can help him develop into 'something really special'. He said: 'I've also got a good support system around me with my agent Joe Bolger, as we do a lot of analysis. 'Robert Snodgrass is also part of the agency and we do a lot of stuff together as well. 'He was a winger and quite a technical player – although he didn't have as much pace as me. 'In fact, he told me: 'I didn't have your pace, but I've got the other side of the game'. 'So if he can help me with that other side then hopefully I can merge into something really special.' Morris may have been seeking advice from Snodgrass and inspiration from Sterling on how to elevate his game to the next level. However, he has also been passing on his own knowledge to help younger players develop. Morris helped fellow Londoner Alfie Dorrington during his loan spell at Pittodrie from Tottenham Hotspur. Centre-back Dorrington started the Scottish Cup final win against Celtic at Hampden. The 20-year-old has now returned to his parent club. Prior to joining Aberdeen on loan. Dorrington signed an extended contract with Tottenham until summer 2029. Morris said: 'When Alfie first came up, I knew he hadn't played much first-team football so I really tried to help him. 'I told him how things were really different compared to London, and he settled in well. 'Alfie showed he's a really good player technically and built on that physical side. 'I think he's only going to get better and better – you can see why Spurs rate him so highly.'

BBC fans urge people to watch ‘amazing' trans teen drama

The eight-episode series, set at the turn of the millennium, is based on the acclaimed memoir by author and trans rights campaigner Paris Lees. For those looking for some Y2K nostalgia, this is your easy fix with retro outfits, cultural references and a killer soundtrack to take you right back. Think those hazy Blair-Brown days when shows like Queer As Folk offered snatches of LGBTQ+ visbility for the community and mainstream trans representation was sparse. The synopsis for the East Midlands-based show reads: 'To find yourself, sometimes you need to lose yourself. It's Y2K, and Byron's flirting with discovery and destruction, love and anarchy. ' Played by Ellis Howard, the show follows Byron as they escape into Nottingham's queer underbelly and discover a vibrant found family in friends, Sasha (Hannah Jones) and Lady Die (Laquarn Lewis) aka Fallen Dives in the club scene. The series also stars Calam Lynch, Laura Haddock, Hannah Walters and Michael Socha. It is already being praised by fans on X. 'First 2 episodes boxed off. That was actually very, very good!' All episodes of 'thrilling' axed historical drama dropping on free UK streamer
There's an unmissable swashbuckling period drama to add to your watchlists, as viewers will soon be able to watch the entire show for free. Starring Derry Girls alum Louisa Harland, the swaggering 18th-century period drama Renegade Nell found a dedicated fanbase when it was released last year on Disney Plus. Harland plays a young widower turned highwaywoman robber, who has some special superpowers to boot, and all eight episodes will soon be available to binge on ITVX. When she's framed for a murder in Tottenham, Nell is forced on the run with a ragtag group while the elites in the upper echelons of English society have twigged on to her powers she is forced to save the country. Nell is helped by a miniature Nick Mohammed, of Ted Lasso and soon-to-be Slow Horses fame, as the mystical sprite Billy Blind. The show is from the mind of Happy Valley writer Sally Wainwright – who is clearly no stranger to writing indomitable female leads – and directed by Sex Education's Ben Taylor, so the combined result is a show with superb production value. Better yet, Renegade Nell was previously behind the Disney Plus paywall but will be streaming on ITVX from Sunday, June 22 – just in time for a weekend binge. However, be warned: the show has already been cancelled by Disney – even with a score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes – so might be best not to become overly attached to the characters. When the axe was officially announced, Disney Plus released a statement to Deadline, reading: 'We're incredibly proud of the world created by Sally Wainwright and lead director Ben Taylor. 'We'd like to thank them, our production partners at Lookout Point, the entire cast – led by Louisa Harland – and crew for their incredible work on this series, all of whom we hope to work with again in the future.' The cancellation was made all the worse because director Ben Taylor told RadioTimes the second season was already being written when the first was released, adding that they were working a time jump into the show. Viewers who have come late to Renegade Nell have already expressed their disappointment that they won't be able to return to this world. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), @Crowbarella wrote: 'I seem to have this habit of finding awesome shows after they've already been canceled. #RenegadeNell.'
