New lock safety feature could help SNAP benefit recipients avoid theft
A technology upgrade could protect Pennsylvania residents from SNAP benefits theft.
JET 24 has been reporting on this issue after hearing complaints from residents in Meadville and Erie who had their benefits stolen.

Since congressional authorization ended in December, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services has been unable to reissue those benefits.
But according to Secretary Valerie Arkoosh, EBT cards can now be protected with a lock safety feature.

'You lock your house when you leave for the day. You lock your car when you're not using it. Now you can lock your EBT card when it's not in use to protect your SNAP and cash benefits from skimming and theft,' said Valerie Arkoosh, MD, secretary of the PA Department of Human Services.
The new card lock safety feature is available on the Connect EBT website and mobile app.

Mission Telecom Partners with Computers 4 People to Launch Low-Cost 5G Hotspot & Fast, Reliable Broadband Nationwide for Low-Income Households
This partnership eliminates a major barrier to affordable broadband for low-income households by cutting hardware costs nearly 70%. BOULDER, Colo., June 5, 2025 /CNW/ -- Mission Telecom, a nonprofit telecommunications provider and grantmaker dedicated to expanding digital equity, today announced that they are a selected service provider of Computers 4 People (C4P)'s recently launched $149 Shield 5G Home Hotspot. C4P collaborated with Mission Telecom to unveil their new hotspot at the recent Net Inclusion Conference, announcing it is one of the nation's most affordable 5G routers available, supported by low-cost nationwide broadband service provided by Mission Telecom. This innovative collaboration helps to bridge the digital divide by slashing typical hardware costs by nearly 70% and providing reliable broadband internet to qualifying low-income households for just $14.89 a month. Over half of low-wealth households struggle to afford internet access, and 22 million Americans lack broadband access at home. While the cost of broadband is a barrier, the high price of hardware, especially routers, remains an overlooked barrier to addressing the digital divide. The Shield 5G Home Hotspot addresses this by offering a reliable, portable solution that supports both 5G and 4G networks and works with most SIM cards at a fraction of the typical cost for similar hardware. "Our mission is to make best-in-class internet accessible and affordable to those who need it most," said Mark Colwell, Director of Broadband Operations at Mission Telecom. "In partnership with Computers 4 People, we're removing a major barrier to getting more people connected and providing more opportunities for their lives. This reliable, low-cost solution will help families nationwide access the tools they need to thrive, without being shut out by the high costs of service or hardware." "Internet isn't easy. It's not accessible. It's not affordable. We're changing that, and learning directly from the communities we serve to make it even better," said Dylan Zajac, Founder and Executive Director of Computers 4 People. "Teaming up with Mission Telecom gives us the chance to get creative and think big. This is just the beginning, and we're thrilled to launch Shield Internet alongside our ongoing work providing computers and the skills people need to thrive in today's digital world." After piloting the service earlier this year in New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, the partnership is scaling nationwide to bring fast, reliable, and unlimited internet to households that receive SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, free school lunch, or earn up to 200% of the federal poverty level. Mission Telecom offers unlimited internet service to organizations like C4P, schools, libraries, and other non-profits on one of the biggest 5G networks in the country without hidden fees, credit checks, or price hikes. C4P developed the Shield 5G Home Hotspot, which is portable and fully unlocked, in partnership with Mission Telecom to expand digital equity throughout the country. The Shield 5G Home Hotspot is now available for pre-order and will be offered in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Americans' interest in electric cars dwindles as the firestorm around Tesla grows
The number of people who plan to buy an EV is the lowest since 2019, a new AAA report finds. Cost and high repair costs were cited as the reasons. But the actions of Elon Musk and the pushback on Tesla could also be a factor. There have never been more electric vehicle options for consumers — but demand for the gas-alternative cars and trucks hasn't been this low since 2019. A new report from AAA shows buyers are increasingly hesitant to buy EVs, with only 19% of the people surveyed saying they were 'likely' or 'very likely' to purchase one as their next car. The number who are adamantly against buying an EV was up, however. Some 63% of respondents said they were 'unlikely' or 'very unlikely' to buy an EV. That's the highest number since 2022. While buyers are still as interested as ever in saving money on gas (74% of the people said that would be their primary reason to buying an EV) and a notable 59% cited concern for the environment, AAA said high battery repair costs (62%) and high purchase prices (59%) were among the key barriers to going electric. Not mentioned in the AAA report, but almost certainly a factor is the pushback that has emerged in the past year against Tesla, one of the largest EV brands – and more specifically, its CEO Elon Musk. Musk's political activities and antics (such was waving a chainsaw or making a gesture that many likened to a Nazi salute) have soured support from many consumers, which has resulted in a significant sales slump at Tesla. Last quarter, the company reported a 13% drop in vehicles sales and 71% drop in profits. Musk, who was largely absent from Tesla during his time at the White House and running the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has recently resumed his executive duties at the automaker. AAA notes that while interest is declining in electric vehicles, consumers may find interest in hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, which combine internal combustion with electric power. Snap launches Lens Studio iOS and web apps for creating AR Lenses with AI and simple tools
Snap has launched a stand-alone Lens Studio iOS app and web tool, the company announced on Wednesday. The new tools are designed to make it easier for anyone to create AR Lenses through text prompts and simple editing tools. With the Lens Studio app, users will be able to do things like generate their own AI effects, add their Bitmoji, and browse trending templates to create customized Lenses. Up until now, Lens Studio has only been accessible via a desktop application for professional developers. While the desktop application will remain the primary tool for professionals, Snap says that the new iOS app and web tool are designed to allow people at all skill levels to create Lenses. "These are experimental new tools that make it easier than ever to create, publish, and play with Snapchat Lenses made by you," Snap wrote in a blog post. "Now, you can generate your own AI effects, add your dancing Bitmoji to the fun, and express yourself with Lenses that reflect your mood or an inside joke — whether you're on the go or near your computer." While Snap currently has an ecosystem of over 400,000 professional AR developers, the company is looking to attract more people who are interested in creating Lenses with the launch of these simpler tools. Snap is considered a leader in AR thanks to its early adoption of the technology through its AR filters and Lenses, and it's clear the company is committed to investing in the space, even as others may be retracting from it. Last year, Meta angered creators after it decided to shut down its Spark AR platform, which allowed third parties to build augmented reality (AR) effects. By opening up access to AR creation, Snap is doubling down on its vision for the technology. As Snap is bringing AR creation into the hands of more people, the company is also rolling out advanced tools for professionals. Yesterday, Snap released new Lens Studio tools that AR creators and developers can use to build Bitmoji games. The tools include a turn-based system to enable back-and-forth gameplay, a new customizable Character Controller that supports different gameplay styles, and more.
