New lock safety feature could help SNAP benefit recipients avoid theft
A technology upgrade could protect Pennsylvania residents from SNAP benefits theft. JET 24 has been reporting on this issue after hearing complaints from residents in Meadville and Erie who had their benefits stolen. Meadville police, AAA to give away steering wheel locks: Here's how you can get one Since congressional authorization ended in December, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services has been unable to reissue those benefits. But according to Secretary Valerie Arkoosh, EBT cards can now be protected with a lock safety feature. Warren police warning of impersonation phone scam 'You lock your house when you leave for the day. You lock your car when you're not using it. Now you can lock your EBT card when it's not in use to protect your SNAP and cash benefits from skimming and theft,' said Valerie Arkoosh, MD, secretary of the PA Department of Human Services. Erie Co. man finds vintage JET Radio record in Texas
An Erie County man was visiting family in Texas, only to discover a blast from the past from back home. Ed Rickrode was browsing an antique shop in Kerrville, Texas, when he stumbled upon an old record with a WJET label. City of Erie releases summer paving plans At first, he thought there must be a JET Radio in Texas, but then he read the words: '30 years of Erie Gold.' He purchased the record featuring personalities and songs from the 50s through the 80s for just $9. City of Erie pleased with first round of code sweeps 'And if you look on the back of the record, they have been produced by Jim Cook and they have Myron Jones, Frank Martin, and there's other ones I recognize the names on them. But when I first got it, I'm thinking Erie Gold, holy smokes that's from Erie, PA,' Rickrode said. Rickrode generously donated the record to us here at JET24, where we'll proudly display it. LGL: Union City School District Foundation
Not every school district has one, but Union City does. The Union City School District Foundation is the recipient of this week's JET 24/FOX 66 Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express. Helping students grow. That's the mission of the foundation. Donations to the organization help with a variety of initiatives, according to foundation board member Steve Jones. 'Most specifically, it's for the scholarships that we provide and also mini teacher grants,' Jones said. So teachers can come up with special ideas that otherwise that would not have been able to do. These teacher grants give them those opportunities to help enrich the lives of the students they have.' One of the most noticeable projects funded in part by the foundation is recent upgrades to the district's sports complex. Jones said, 'We put in all new dugouts, fields, fencing, concession stands, and most importantly, the press box. When you come into this community now, you can see the difference.' The foundation received a $250 Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express and immediately assigned it to students for something special. 'We're going to put it towards International Day, which is a day we get to celebrate a bunch of different countries all over the world. And we get to try different foods from some of those countries. and play games and socialize,' said student Ava Greer. The work of the Union City School District Foundation can be supported by you on ERIE GIVES day, coming up August 12.
