Egypt Targets 60% Waste Recycling Rate by 2027

Cairo - 18 June 2025: Yasmine Fouad, Egypt's Minister of Environment, announced before the Local Administration Committee of the House of Representatives that the country is aiming to achieve a 60% recycling rate for municipal solid waste by the year 2027, up from just 10% when the waste management system began in 2018 .
She explained that, by the end of 2024, recycling rates had already increased to 37%, with the goal set to reach 60% by 2027. This effort is expected to secure raw materials for organic fertilizer and alternative fuels, supporting Egypt's circular economy agenda .
The minister emphasized that the Waste Management Law is designed not only to promote recycling but also to attract private-sector participation in infrastructure. Initially, the system included just two public-private contracts; that number has since surged to 36 contracts covering waste collection, transport, treatment, and recycling—many introduced simultaneously across several governorates to speed nationwide implementation .
In addition, Dr. Fouad highlighted innovative initiatives converting waste to energy—such as landfill gas and sewage sludge projects. Notable success stories include the transformation of landfill gas at Al-Salam landfill and sewage sludge at Abu Rawash into energy sources, backed by a new feed-in-tariff approved by a multi-ministerial committee .
Financing these ventures has involved activating legal fees stipulated in the Waste Management Law, tapping property tax revenues, drawing from provincial development funds, and introducing an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), starting with single-use plastic bags as of February 2025, and soon to include other packaging and metallic products .
She also noted that the newly formed Waste Management Regulatory Authority, transformed into an 'economic authority,' successfully generated a surplus of EGP 45 million, validating the financial viability and impact of the legal reforms .
Dr. Fouad outlined the journey from 2018 to date: a sizeable leap in recycling rates and collection efficiency (rising from 60% to 74%), extensive contract rollouts, and the expansion of recycling infrastructure across governorates—including urgent interventions in Giza and Qalyubia .
Her closing remarks thanked all stakeholders—government, parliament, private sector, and ministry staff—for their collective cooperation in building and advancing Egypt's integrated waste-management landscape .

Experts Forecast EGP 15 Billion Revenue Surge Following New Rent Law

Previously, under Law No. 49/1977, properties under old rent contracts were exempt from all property taxes. Aug 11, 2025 The Egyptian Association of Tax Experts (EATE) projects a minimum EGP 15 billion increase in state treasury revenues within the first year following the ratification of Law No. 165/2025, the updated Old Rent Law. Previously, under Law No. 49/1977, properties under old rent contracts were exempt from all property taxes and excluded from the general income tax base. The new law lifts these exemptions, subjecting these units to property tax and including their revenues in income tax calculations. Egypt has approximately 42 million housing units, of which 3.018 million (about 7%) fall under old rent contracts, including apartments, houses, shops, and garages. The new law categorises old rent units into three zones: premium areas, where rents are up to 20 times the old rate with a minimum of EGP 1,000 and most properties expected to be taxed; mid-range areas, where rents are up to 10 times the old rate with a minimum of EGP 400 and about half expected to be taxed; and economic areas, where rents are up to 10 times the old rate with a minimum of EGP 250 and no taxation expected. Rental valuations must be completed by survey committees within three months of the law's implementation, factoring in location, size, infrastructure, and service access. Property tax will be calculated as 10% of net rental value, after deducting 30% for residential unit expenses and 32% for commercial or administrative expenses.

Egypt Postpones Fuel Price Hike Until October

Taarek Refaat The Egyptian government has announced that current fuel prices will remain unchanged until October 2025, maintaining the same levels set in April, as part of efforts to ease financial burdens on citizens. The decision follows directives from Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, who emphasized the importance of supporting households during a period of continued economic challenges. The government previously postponed the scheduled July 2025 meeting of the Automatic Fuel Pricing Committee, extending the existing pricing policy for an additional three months. The move aims to prevent any potential fuel price increases in the third quarter of the year. Officials described the extension as part of a broader economic relief package, designed to mitigate the impact of inflation and maintain stability in basic commodity pricing. The fuel pricing mechanism, typically reviewed quarterly, adjusts prices in line with global oil markets and currency fluctuations. However, exceptional circumstances have led the government to freeze prices multiple times in recent years. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani

Egypt Ranks Second Globally in Exports of Temporarily Preserved Vegetables

Taarek Refaat Egypt has solidified its position as a global agricultural powerhouse, securing the second place worldwide in the export of temporarily preserved vegetables (HS Code 071190) for the year 2024, according to a new report from the Food Export Council. The country exported 54,000 metric tons of vegetables preserved temporarily, a category that includes products prepared for further processing, generating $66 million in export revenue. This accounted for a 15.4% share of global exports in the category, a significant milestone that reflects Egypt's fast-growing competitiveness in processed agricultural goods. Egypt's performance in this sector has been consistently improving, with the report noting an annual value growth rate of 15% and a volume growth rate of 12% between 2020 and 2024. On a year-over-year basis, exports increased 10% in value between 2023 and 2024, despite global trade fluctuations, a sign of resilient supply chains, stable production infrastructure, and growing global confidence in Egyptian agricultural products. Top Export Destinations in 2024 The report identified five key markets that accounted for 83% of Egypt's exports in this category: Italy – $33 million (51%) United States – $8 million (12%) Germany – $7 million (10%) Spain – $4 million (5%) Russia – $3 million (5%) These figures underscore Egypt's growing reputation as a reliable supplier of safe, high-quality, and standard-compliant agricultural products, particularly to advanced economies with stringent food safety regulations. Positioning Egypt for Future Expansion The Food Export Council emphasized that the sector's momentum is opening new opportunities for global market expansion, especially in response to rising international demand for sustainable and traceable food sources. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani
