Two days later, Aaron Boone pulled the trigger.
On Sunday, the Yankees manager considered starting Giancarlo Stanton in right field on back-to-back days, but opted against it.

On Tuesday, he made the decision to send him out there for consecutive days for the first time since the slugger began playing the field last week, and Stanton rewarded him with four hits and three RBIs in an 9-1 victory.
'Just feel like he has responded well to it physically and obviously want to keep his bat in there as much as possible, too,' Boone said.
With Aaron Judge (right elbow flexor strain) not ready to play the field as he continues his rehab program, the 35-year-old Stanton has been used in right field for the first time since September 2023.

He hasn't been tested much out there.
Getting his powerful bat in the lineup, however, is so important for the Yankees.

'It's a credit to him. G's here to win, period. There's different things that pop up over the course of the season that require changing course or doing something a little bit different,' Boone said. 'In his case, with Aaron going down for this period of time, making himself an option again in the outfield, he knows it is important to the club. He started working hard at it to prepare for this and give us that option.'

As for Judge returning to the outfield, there still isn't a target date for that.
Boone wouldn't rule out this weekend against the Cardinals in St. Louis. Judge said his elbow is responding well to throwing so far, but when asked about a possible return date, deferred questions to trainers.

'Ten days off with no throwing is a little bit weird, then trying to ramp it back up,' Judge said. 'But we're feeling good. We're progressing. It's all on what the trainers say. Hopefully we get back out there soon. I told Big G, don't get comfortable in right field.'

Stanton is enjoying himself out there for the time being.
'Finding gloves from the fans is one of my favorites, so I try to not make them move it,' he said with a smile. 'That's always fun.'
Reliever Jonathan Loáisiga (right mid-back tightness) threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and could be in the mix to return shortly.
The right-hander has been on the injured list since Aug. 3.
'He should be in play starting pretty soon, just because he wasn't down for very long,' Boone said. 'He should be close.'

Boone said the Yankees haven't decided if Loáisiga will need a minor league rehabilitation assignment.
Austin Wells was on the bench for the third time in four games, replaced behind the plate by Ben Rice.
Boone said the struggling Wells will start the series finale on Wednesday at catcher.

Yankees Could Place 1B Paul Goldschmidt on IL With Knee Sprain

Major League Baseball Yankees Could Place 1B Paul Goldschmidt on IL With Knee Sprain Published Aug. 14, 2025 2:19 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Paul Goldschmidt has a low-grade right knee sprain and the New York Yankees may place the veteran first baseman on the injured list ahead of his return to St. Louis this weekend. The Yankees will evaluate Goldschmidt during their day off and will decide before Friday's game against the Cardinals if he will be placed on the IL. "He's dealing with something so we'll see if it's an IL situation," manager Aaron Boone said after Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Minnesota. "He was pretty sore last night and this morning. Feels like he's doing quite a bit better right now so we'll see." Goldschmidt was injured chasing down a foul pop by Byron Buxton in the third inning of Tuesday's 9-1 victory. Goldschmidt overran the ball along the dirt track near the Yankee dugout and slipped before making the catch on the grass while slightly falling down. "When I kind of overran it and dove back, hit my knee on the ground I guess," Goldschmidt said. "I felt that it was sore yesterday but obviously was able to play through it." ADVERTISEMENT Goldschmidt stayed in Tuesday's game and hit a double in the seventh before being lifted with the Yankees holding an eight-run lead. "As I was going to going back to my position, I was like 'that kind of hurt,' but stuff like that happens," Goldschmidt said. "So just felt like I could continue to play, which I did and it was fine." Goldschmidt, who is hitting .404 off left-handed pitching this year, did not start Wednesday and did not pinch hit when Austin Wells batted and struck out against left-handed reliever Kody Funderburk in the seventh. Signed to a one-year, $12.5 million contract in December following six seasons with the Cardinals, the former NL MVP is hitting .276 with 10 homers and 40 RBIs in 112 games this season. He also has a .996 fielding percentage and has been charged with three errors in 745 chances this year. Ben Rice made his 26th start at first base Wednesday and Cody Bellinger has made two starts at first this season. Bellinger has started 273 games at first base during his nine-year career. "He's been a huge part of his team," Bellinger said about Goldschmidt. "He's a vacuum over there. I played first before and I'm really appreciative what he does on the defensive side." The Yankees are attempting to hold on to the third wild card spot in the AL, with the Guardians sitting one game behind them in the standings. They're 4-8 in August, and just 29-35 since the start of June. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Latest Yankees News Causes Further Dimming of Playoff Hopes

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. On a day when every other other team in the American League Wild Card race went down in defeat, the New York Yankees blew a golden opportunity to gain ground when they lost 4-1 to a team they had beaten nine straight times, and 11 out of 15 going back to 2023 season, the Minnesota Twins. As a result, the Yankees remained stuck in the third and final AL Wild Card spot, just one slim game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians, and 1 1/2 behind their arch-rivals, the Boston Red Sox. NEW YORK, NY - JULY 31: Manager, Aaron Boone #17 of the New York Yankees looks on during the game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium on July 31, 2025 in New York,... NEW YORK, NY - JULY 31: Manager, Aaron Boone #17 of the New York Yankees looks on during the game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium on July 31, 2025 in New York, New York. More NewAfter the game, however, the Yankees revealed even more disturbing news that can only make their quest to hang on to a playoff spot more difficult. The 2022 National League MVP who signed as a free agent with the Yankees in the offseason on a one-year, $12.5 million contract, was unavailable for the game against the Twins and may require a stint on the injured list. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt, according to manager Aaron Boone, is suffering from a "low grade right knee sprain." The injury occurred Tuesday night when the 37-year-old, 15-year veteran slammed his knee into the dirt catching a foul pop fly. This is the play where Paul Goldschmidt suffered the low-grade right-knee sprain. You can see him bang the knee pretty hard in foul territory. — Brendan Kuty 🧟‍♂️ (@BrendanKutyNJ) August 14, 2025 The knee sprain was the reason, Boone said, that Goldschmidt could not be used as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning Wednesday when the Twins pulled ace starter Joe Ryan in favor of lefty reliever Kody Funderburk. With a runner on third base and two outs, Boone was forced to send up slumping Austin Wells, who took a called third strike to end the Yankees' threat. More MLB: Yankee Legends Floated to Replace Aaron Boone; Here's Who Would Really Get Job With an off-day Thursday, the Yankees travel to St. Louis where they will face Goldschmidt's previous team, the Cardinals, for a three-game inter-league set. Whether the Yankees first baseman will be ready to play remains uncertain. Goldschmidt remained optimistic, saying of the injury, "I don't think it's anything long term," as quoted by The Athletic. But he also acknowledged there was a "chance" he could wind up on the injured list. With only 41 games remaining on the Yankees' schedule, and the struggling team in a razor-close battle to make the postseason, even a stint on the 10-day injured list for Goldschmidt could put a significant dent in the Bronx Bombers' chances. 2025 AL Central Odds: Can Detroit End Division Title Drought?

Major League Baseball 2025 AL Central Odds: Can Detroit End Division Title Drought? Published Aug. 14, 2025 12:47 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link The AL Central division race is a crystal clear one for oddsmakers. Which squad is favored to win the AL Central this season? Here are the odds at DraftKings Sportsbook as of Aug. 14, as well as what to know about the division. AL Central winner Tigers: -1400 (bet $10 to win $10.71 total) Guardians: +1400 (bet $10 to win $150 total) Royals: +5000 (bet $10 to win $510 total) Twins: +20000 (bet $10 to win $2,010 total) What to know: The Guardians have claimed the most AL Central titles of all time with 12, followed by the Twins with nine. Over the last decade, Cleveland has captured five crowns — 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2024 — including last season's 92-69 regular-season finish that ended in an ALCS loss to the Yankees. But 2025 hasn't been as kind to the Guardians, who sit well behind Detroit on the oddsboard and in the standings. The Tigers, who haven't won the division since 2014, lead the AL Central with a 70-52 record as of Aug. 14, 6.5 games better than Cleveland's 62-57. The Twins, fresh off a 2023 division title and ALDS appearance, are buried at the bottom of the board. Since the AL Central's creation in 1994, only two teams have gone on to win the World Series: the White Sox in 2005 and the Royals in 2015. This year, the White Sox have already been mathematically eliminated. ADVERTISEMENT This season, the Tigers have been led by reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, who is second in MLB in ERA (2.35) and third in strikeouts (187). Remaining matchups: Detroit and Cleveland still have six head-to-head games, and the Tigers open a four-game road series against the Twins on Thursday.
